In 1642, a small group of French settlers led by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance navigated up the Saint Lawrence River and landed at Pointe-à-Callière, they built a fort there which they named Ville-Marie, the foundation of what would become the great city of Montreal. As I live on this historic site, the idea came to me to explore the island from this point of origin. I essentially observe the imprint of man on the formerly virgin territory and the resilience of nature. Report of my first 10 expeditions to the Ville-Marie district. The situation was tense at a pro-Palestine encampment protest at Northeastern University Friday night. Given unconfirmed reports police action could happen as early as 11 PM, many were on the edge. That tension only grew when a group of pro-Israel Jewish students came to counter-protest the encampment’s “liberated zone.” With pro-Palestine protesters locked in arms, their chants of “Free Palestine” were met with provocative counter slogans from two pro-Israel students standing on the barricaded lawn chairs on the rim of the encampment. Behind the lawn chairs, a protest leader announced “You repeat to me what I repeat to you. Got it?” One counter-protester yelled “Kill the Jews” while holding the Israeli flag. “Anybody on board with that?” Clearly meaning to provoke and create a reaction, the peaceful protesters responded with booing and opened a lane for them to leave, in which they did when camp chanting began to taper off by midnight. The next morning, police arrested about 100 demonstrators. At the Ilum O'Tarok cultural event yesterday, there was this particular set whose uniqueness caught my attention. They displayed this bond you could see its thick thread through decades. More like childhood playmates who grew into adulthood bondmates. These women! I carefully watched and studied their moves. They were women who should be in their 40s and above_no younger women. As they sang and danced, their arms glued round each other's wrist and shoulders raising one leg up, the other down flowing with the harmony of their vocals. And even without the special costumes and uniforms, their hearts were in uniform to the symphony their lips let out using iTarok.
