The GM Ground type! Of course they had a mass-produced version. In fact, according to the retcon after 08th MS Team came out: these were BEFORE the regular GM! The whole story (technology wise) for 08th MS Team was that the Federation needed mobile suits and couldn't wait for White Base to stop running and bring them the data from the RX series, so they went ahead with what data they had to build all the ground types. The GMs, as usual, were the main forces. Once again, this is mostly what you've seen already, save for a different torso and head. The neat part about the whole 08th MS Team series is that they made sure to give each figure at least one unique weapon, so that you'd have the whole gamut of weapon options for the Ground Type Series. The GM's unique item was the missile laucher, which is just a huge chunk that holds sox missiles. On top of that, they shove another vehicle in there: the Type 61 Tank! This is a common background tank throughout the Gundam series, since this was part of the Federation's main fighting forces before Mobile Suits walked on to the scene. Now, the only problem with this release was that they turned the army-building up to eleven: there are many number variations for the shields! I managed to get two 04 shields, but couldn't find another and settled for an 08, which is kinda weird, since the 08th didn't have a GM (but they can now!). I've seen 03s and 02's and there may have been even more (hopefully there were 06s to match the Gundam desert type). Hey, it's another Ground Type! This one is a Ground Type Desert Type. Kinda doesn't make sense though...they had an episode of 08th MS Team where they show them outfitting the Ground Types with extra coverage on the joints so they could move around in the desert without getting sand in the innards. This one doesn't have that. It's just desert-colored. But that's fine! It's a great figure, like the others. Also I used it as a guinea pig for panel lining! If you look close, you can see I used different pens on the limbs. It worked out well enough. MSiA Gundam EZ8! It might not look like it, but this is a modified Gundam Ground Type, after it was heavily damaged. This is what some inventive field repairs look like. The MSiA is as solid as the Ground Types and comes with a new collapsible bazooka that can fit inside the backpack. On top of that, it also comes with the important hover tank to round out the whole team! It's a must-have figure if you're building the 08th MS Team, but then, if you aren't, you'll probably get this figure anyway. My only complaint is that the light cream color of the EZ8 is a bit aggressive on this figure, and it's not age-yellowing. It's always been on the heavy cream side, where it needs to be a bit more tan. Nitpicking, though. MSiA Gundam Ground Type, US version. What a figure! Great back then, great today. The basic Ground Type is loaded with stuff, and then the rest of the items you may have seen in the show are spread between other 08th MS Team figures. You can even fit items in the backpack! And the magazines come off the hips! I could talk about these all day, but I should also mention the one with the GM head. That one got it's head knocked off by an Acguy, so they used a spare GM head to repair it. Yeah, it's an easy swap, but the GM Head version also came with the massive parachute backpack that you see a couple times, so it was worth another purchase. We'll be seeing more of these at a later date, since there's also a desert version and a battle scarred version to deal with. Yay, my favorite! I was excited to get this, but I sadly ran in to a dud, because the right leg pops off all the time. On top of that...not complaining...but how did they make this basic suit AFTER the Gundam Second Version? How were they not all just as articulated as the Second Version Gundam? Eh, doesn't matter. This is still a solid toy, even with the loose leg. You get everything you need, plus the chobham armor! The Alex got the real deluxe treatment! There's a huge hole in my collection when it comes to Gundam Wing, and it's because of two things: It was easier to get everything else, and they made second versions of all the main suits, so I wanted to get those. The second versions, however, are tough to tell apart by just seeing loose pics, so I never got around to hunting them down, save for a few. So! Here's the Tallgeese III. I skipped both the first and second, though I got a Robot Spirits version of the first a few years ago. In most cases I prefer MSiA, but the Tallgeese is a special case... ...you, the Tallgeese is ALL SHOULDERS. They hold everything, which makes no sense, because the shoulder armor is taking the brunt of the extreme thrust from the binders and the extreme kick of the cannon, and any addtional kicks that the shield absorbs. ALL IN THE SHOULDERS. So, while it looks cool as hell on screen, the physical toy has to be adjusted constantly. Every move of the gun or shield or moving the arms up means you also have to adjust the binders, which hang back there on tiny ball joints that like to pop off. Long story short: It's tough to move this thing. But it still looks cool! And the Tallgeese III is particularly brilliant, because it mixes the Tallgeese with the Epyon (I'll show that off later). MSiA Gundam v2! This is the US version (no panel lines but lots of other painted details), but with the order I've been going in, this is the next one I have that came out in the Japanese line. Besides the paint, the only other difference is that the Japanese version also comes with a second hammer called the Hyper Hammer. Because one isn't enough. ANYWAY: I was ridiculously geeked when I found out about this, and then found out they were bringing it to the US pronto! Seriously, there's just a few months between the Japanese and US version. This was back in my regular hunting days, so I rabidly hunted this down until it turned up in TRU. WORTH. EVERY. PENNY. Still is. It comes with a literal load of stuff (even a whole friggin' plane), has double jointed knees and elbows, they reworked the skirt so the legs aren't as restricted, the ankles can actually rock, and even the cockpit opens to show a tiny Amuro! I dunno what it is, but I can't put this down! Even after all these years. MSiA Hyaku Shiki, the first version. I was pretty excited to get this one back in the day, but disappointed once I opened it up. For something so slick, the designers didn't put much movement into this one. The Shiki's skirt armor is one solid chunk, so moving the legs around is almost pointless. The shoulder armor runs into the backpack, and the head runs into the collar. Top that off with a small accessory count, and this was an all-around disappointing release. The only thing I like are those blue beam sabers, and even THAT'S wrong! The sabers are supposed to have yellow beams...not that it's an important detail. So, in the end, it's a pretty one. That's about it. This is a rare situation where I have both the US and the Japanese version of an MSiA figure. I orignally bought the Japanese Gelgoog a long time ago, and then got the US one much later from someone I was buying from back in college. This is a good example of the overall difference between the US and Japanese releases: the Japanese ones were panel lined, but the US ones were not, and instead used the paint budget to add faction logos and other details you might have seen in MSV illustrations. So, they can't really be compared. The panel lines look nice, but some of the US ones look real impressive with the added details (though the Gelgoog isn't a good example; it just gets some Zeon logos on the shield and shoulders). The US ones also got less accessories, though only by a little. For instance, they almost always had less hands, but usually came with most of the same weapons. The US Gelgoog lost out on some saber blades and hands, but added a whole spaceship...if you can call the Gattle that. It's more like a cube that someone carved a ship into and threw it out into space, hoping for the best. They were at least nice enough to make the cockpits huge and obvious so they can pop off and fly away and totally not get shot first before anything else. Besides the differences, the Gelgoog is an all around solid figure and great toy. Nothing falls off, it holds stuff well, and you're getting a LOT with either version. I feel like it stands the test of time. MSiA Gundam MKII! This is the first one I bought from a shop in another town called Wizzywig. They were a magical place, back then! I couldn't make it out there often, and usually I only had enough for one thing. The MKII started doing thing a little differently than other MSiA at the time - not all of it worked. This was the first one to have separate beams for the sabers, though leaving the beams in meant that the handles got stretched out and didn't fit properly in the holsters. They also tried to free up the skirt armor by adding hinges to the sides, but they're only clipped on, and they sit SO CLOSE to the hip joints! You'll be chasing those things down as they pop off at high speeds while just posing the figure. On the plus side, the details are nice, and the ankles are finally freed up a bit more (plus you can see the pistons). It holds accessories well, and comes with a decent spread. I still loved it despite the faults, because the MKII rocks, but it was improved upon later with the Extended edition (which I never managed to get). HEY, Big Zam! Or Byg Zam, if you prefer. I purchased this from some guy named @toygalaxy back in 2016 or 17, before I even knew he had a youtube channel. Turns out he does! You should check it out. Called Secret Galaxy now, because galaxies are so full of secrets. I think he talks about space stuff. So this Burger Baby came out in 2000 and it TAUNTED me on the shelf of Wizzywig (anime shop back in the day). I had about enough cash to spare on ONE MSiA figure every time I went (which wasn't often. I didn't drive yet so I was a freeloading little weasle), and this beast wasn't in the budget. Wasn't in the budget a few years later either, since he skyrocketed up to 200 or 300 bucks (or even more, depending on the box). I erased it from my mind until it showed up on Dan's instagram and he sold it to me for a ridiculously reasonable price. Is it all it's cracked up to be? Well...yeah! I mean, I'm not gonna buy another Big Zam of this magnitude, even if it's a Robot Spirits one. This does what I need it to do! It big. It burger. Don't need no mo'. That said, the legs are a bit looser than I'd like, and the antennas like to pop off, but these are very slight gripes that don't effect photography that much. MSiA Zeong, the US version. This was next in terms of Japanese releases in 2000, but I didn't have that one! Only thing you're missing out on here are the panel lines. The Zeong was a ridiculous mobile suit that was technically incomplete. Yeah, I guess this was supposed to have legs! Didn't matter though, because it was capable of wrecking-shop with only boosters for legs and a Char in the cockpit. It's got beam fingers, guns in the stomach and a gun in the mouth! The figure is quite solid and well worth picking up in either version: US or Japanese. The only bad thing is getting the arms popped off to add the wires - they come off at the eblows constantly while trying to get the forearms out of the sockets. Small gripe though; nothing to lower the all-around coolness of this figure. 1.0 MSiA GM and Ball set! This was my first big MSiA disappointment. The GM is just a loose mess waiting to fall apart. The arms fall off the most. They're gonna pop off no matter what you're doing. Also, somehow the skirt is even more restrictive than the regular Gundam! Not sure how this one happened, but chalk it up to those early joints The Ball is best boy, and I have no problems. The Snips can move around, the cannon is adjustable, and the whole thing is adorable. A+. MSiA Zeta Gundam, version 1. This one disappointed me back in the day, since parts just keep falling off this thing. This one doesn't transform though, so technically it is sturdier than the 2.0, which ended up a fiddly mess in some ways. This one could also be improved by just gluing on the back parts, whereas you can't really improve the 2.0 without messing something up. Anyway, THIS version comes with a ton of stuff! A rifle, sabers, shield, all those back parts, hands, a grenade launcher, and of course...the Hyper Mega Launcher. I don't know why it's called a "launcher", since it's just a massive beam rifle, but I guess it launches uh...beam. So, why not? Getting back to the point: the weapon is humongous, and the figure has a hard time holding it properly. The hand keeps popping off, the arms aren't strong enough, and you can't get the right arm low enough to get the left had in the proper grip (though you can kinda hold it above it's head). It is a friggin' AWESOME gun, but unwieldy. MSiA High Mobility Zaku II, Shin Matsunaga custom! This one is the same as the Black Tri-stars one, save for a finned head and normal bazooka. This is a great color scheme, though! Regardless, it has been fazed out by the 2.0 version, which we'll see later. As for Shin Matsunaga, according to the wiki, he's had a few contradictory stories told about him. Did he survive the Battle of Solomon? Did he not? Depends on the story! MSiA High Mobility Zaku II, Black Tri-Stars colors. This was a simple modification of the basic Zaku II with new lower legs and a new backpack. The Black Tri-Stars - known later for piloting Doms - were a trio of ace pilots. Emphasis on "were", because they had to meet the main character at SOME point. We never got a basic High Mobility Zaku, since it seems like they didn't make a lot of these. They all went to ace pilots, and those folks tend to like having their own personal colors. Would have been neat to see these in green! The MSiA figure is a tiny bit better than the standard Zaku II, since the ankles are unrestricted and the knees have a bit more range. This particular version is a little bogged down by the Tri-Stars' choice of using the Giant Bazooka, which is a little awkward to hold in the smaller non-Dom hands. Still, you can make it work. GOGG! The Gogg, the one and only, the Great Bambino. This fat 'n sassy ground round mobile suit is like a knife wielding submarine! It's amphibious, large, and uses the water to cool the two huge mega particle cannons on its belly. While it is a literal powerhouse, it's still slow and lumbering, so it was eventually forgotten in favor of the superior Z'Gok. The figure is as simple as it gets: this is it! No accessories. Doesn't neat 'em! The legs are surprisingly mobile, the head and waist can both turn, and the arms are segmented and movable by many ball joints. This is great, but sadly didn't stand the test of time, since they're kinda wobbly now (might have to do the superglue trick to tighten them up). This one is still a favorite after all these years, and I feel like it's still worth picking up. MSiA Guncannon! This was another I bought just because I was cleaning out the import store, back in high school. It wasn't one I had yet, so why not? This is an extremely limited Guncannon, since it can't do many of the classic Guncannon things - specifically kneeling down to fire the cannons. It can mostly do standing poses! That's about it. Still, it's a solid toy, like many of the early ones. Mine's all loose in the knees and elbows just from messing with it all the time, and it doesn't even have that many poses available to it! I think that speaks for the benefits of simplicity. The Guncannon has some hands, a rifle, and optional missile launchers for the shoulders. It ain't much, but it's all that the Guncannon needs. Amazingly, they never revisited this one down the line - no 2.0 and not even an Extended edition. This remains as the only MSiA Guncannon (the mold, I mean. Good afternoon (these are getting later and later)! This is the Turn A Gundam, and yes, it is WEIRD. But it's weird for a reason! The design is supposed to look far beyond anything that anyone understood, because it IS. The story was originally supposed to be ridiculously far along the original Gundam timeline (Universal Century), but I'm not sure if that's canon anymore. Regardless: the story is that MANY wars have happened in the past, and folks are unearthing all sorts of war machines. The Turn A is the most advanced of them. I thought this was a weird one to add so early in the toyline, until I realised that Turn A started in '99. It was brand new at the time! Makes sense to make a figure of your current Gundam. They kinda went all out, too! It's got nice articulation for the time (mostly due to the slim design), and a sizeable amount of accessories. They made a Robot Spirits one that is impressive, but this still stands as a fun toy. The Turn A itself....man. You gotta watch the show to understand (I haven't even seen it all). The Turn A is what I said: FAR BEYOND. It's mostly hollow, so you can store all sorts of stuff in the chest (including a missile silo that I forgot to show). The "skin" of it is nanites, which, when released in a move called the "Moonlight Butterfly", can reduce anything and everything to dust. I won't say any more, but you can probably guess a few things once you watch the show. It's BONKERS. Good morning! I keep falling asleep while doing these at night, so here's another morning edition: The MSiA Dom, version 1. This is the whole reason why I love Doms! I bought this because, well, I was buying every MSiA at the time! I nearly cleaned out the shop myself. In fact, a few years later (once I knew more about Gundam), I went and got a that second Dom from the same shop because it was collecting dust! I planned on getting a third, but by that time the 2.0 version came out and knocked these guys out of the ring. They're still solid toys, though! The heads don't move, and neither do the waists. The hips can only move forward a little. But hey, the arms are unrestricted! Regardless of the limitations, this one was a lot of fun for a long time. I always loved the long sword it comes with, even if it's really just a stick. And the giant bazooka is a classic! The 2.0 version is a masterpeice, but these old guys can still get down and rumble in a classic toy sense. MSiA Gouf! This one was a no-brainer, back in the day. It's spikey and cool and comes with a sword. It was one of the early ones I bought simply because the local import store had stocked the whole early wave and no one else was buying them! I just popped in and grabbed another with every pay-day. The original Gouf stands the test of time in terms of a toy, though it's no where near as poseable as pretty much any later version (save for the straight release in the states). But that's how it goes, right? Toylines, before the idea of the collector, always start out as something more play-worthy, then slowly move into more points of articulation until it's more fun to pose than to play (though you may consider those the same). So, this Gouf is restricted at the hips and has no outward arm movement, yet that makes it a sturdy toy for old fashioned play. I imagine it was a favorite for you 2000's kids that grew up with the US line. CHA! This is the 1999 MSiA Char, Japanese version. This wasn't my second purchase, though. I bought this one mostly because I missed the basic Zaku, which had been my next mark at the time. This was more like the door prize. I had no idea about the significance of Char related to the Gun-Damn I had bought! Char is here displaying his original anime "pinkish" color, which somehow came to be called "red". He comes with the usual Zaku loadout, though the most often just uses the bazooka. The figure ain't too bad for the time - I mean, the limbs stay on, which is something the Gundam can't even do. Granted, the non-segmented skirt armor helps keep the legs on. Surprisingly, the hips can move well enough, but not too far. In the end, I'm surprised at how well it holds up in a toy-sense. It would do well with young kids! The later ones add a lot of articulation and tons of accessories - which I love - but the simplicity of this first version makes it play-worthy, and therefore, worthy of attention even with the newer remakes. Perhaps you even have a US one floating around your toy room! The same Gundam, but clear! At least, it used to be. This is quite possibly my WORST case of yellowing in my collection. It's just full of bourbon, now. So, this is a promotional figure that was exclusive to Hong Kong, as an extra for the game "SD Gundam G Generation: Gather beat." I don't know how the import shop got a hold of it, but they clearly didn't know the two were supposed to be together. They set the game in the glass case, and this figure got thrown together with the rest at fifteen bucks. I call that a win. The figure will stay with me, of course. Translucent figures never get old. And I've come to like the bourbon color. The year is 1999. I've just gotten a job, and an import store has opened up to relieve me of any responsibility my Dad thought the job would teach me. Gundam Wing was a year away from airing on Toonami, so I had no idea what this Gun-Damn was. All I saw was a fancy japanese box that said "Mobile Suit in Action", a nice array of accessories, and I had a freshly cashed check burning a hole in my pocket. The figure was fifteen bucks. Me and my friend Ryan walked back to his house. I opened up this Gun-Damn. It was good. ...granted, the arms popped off, and so did the legs. Also sometimes the torso poped off. Regardless: I'd never seen anything like it! There were so many accessories (some of which stored on the body) and the detail and paint were off the charts. This was the beginning of my MSiA obsession. A Zaku Head. This came in a delightful little sphere. You open it up, rearrange the parts, and the result is a neat model of a Zaku's head (though I kinda wish it transformed back into the sphere, but whatever). The details are pretty fantastic! You can even open up the top on a hinge and look at the silver innards. The eye moves back and forth as well! I would have picked a more standard Zaku color, but this was the only one I found at the convention I was at, back then. Okay that's it. Full Armor Gundam! SD style! I'm not gonna cover all my models, but this one was left out to stay on the shelf, so it was easy pickins. This little beauty sports a green Gundam base with green armor on top. There's a huge back cannon and a double beam cannon on the arm. We can go into more detail on that later, though. Awhile ago @toygalaxy picked up a new SD figure, which lead me to do the same almost instantly. There were these SD figures that just popped up online for fifteen bucks! Loaded with stuff! Turned out they were reissues of the old SD figures I just covered, except with a new fancy head with these detailed, reflective eyes. So, this is pretty much the same Nu Gundam from the US line, but without the booster sled. And MAN what a steal this thing was for fifteen! It's the Nu, all it's weapons, plus the heavy armor addtions! This thing is just a BEAST once it's all decked out. Since this is almost the same as the US figure, the same sturdiness is carried over, so it'd a solid toy! The SD Gundam Force toyline was on the shelves at the same time as a basic SD toyline that wasn't a part of the show. As you can see, it was just the usual mobile suits, but super deformed. This set is your classic RX-78 with the G-Fighter, my arch nemesis when it comes to reviews. I have to look up how to configure this every. Single. Time. So, while this is an excellent set, it is still a G-Fighter set, and I friggin' hate that thing. However, if you don't hate it, then this set is great! The Gundam is a fantastic SD representation, it comes with all the weapons you need, and it's a solid toy. The G-Fighter and it's bits are all there to recreate all the completely unnecessary and ugly-ass transformations that nobody remembers, since it was cut from the film versions of Mobile Suit Gundam. They are here in toy form, by god! They appear often enoigh anyway. So, this set is awesome! I just hate the G-Fighter. Pawn Leo! Yes, the Zakus were the mooks throughout SD Gundam Force, but the Tallgeese had his own personal mooks. Of course they were Leos! The way Zakus were portrayed was funny - just bumbling lackies - but the Leos sound like they were EVEN dumber. Not only that, but Leos are known for exploding upon the softest whisper of the word "Gundam" in Gundam Wing, and they hilariously carried that over to SD Gundam force, with these idiots falling over themselves and dying on contact with the ground. To display this feature of fragility, there's a tiny cape on the back that acts as a lever. Press it down, and the yellow visor goes from confused to just straight up DEAD. Yeah. That's a Leo alright. Sadly, I got this guy in the cheap bins at Power Con, so he doesn't have any accessories, but he is supposed to be pretty loaded! He came with a sword, shield, crossbow, and an optional headpeice to denote who is currently commanding the squad of idiots. It's enough good stuff that I may just track down a complete one sometime. I don't know what this is (looks like an SD Knight Gundam), but it's one of my favorite little gashapon figures. I'd have more if I could figure out what it is! It's simple: it's a translucent orange Gundam-ish robot, the head comes off, and inside is a translucent pilot! Bravo! Perfection! What more could you want? I have no idea what it's from, but it's not the usual design of the Musha Gundam (a samurai-themed Gundam). It's clearly a variation on the Gundam, but doesn't line up with any Musha styles. Anyway, this cute little rascal has a removable head, revealing a pilot! When the head is removed, the eyes turn "off." It's a neat little feature! G Frame GP01Fb, Full Burnern (though I could have sworn it was "Vernian" or something like that). This is the GP01 from Stardust Memory, after it gets all messed up and repaired. I'm not usually a fan of this version, but as usual, I'm drawn to it simply because G Frame figures are so much fun to pose! I got way more out of this suit than I thought I would! The GP01Fb comes with the standard beam rifle and shield, but no sword. Probably because it has the extra big thrusters on the shoulders, taking up accessory space. Overall, this one was fantastic! G Frame Rick Dias! Not quite as awesome as the others, but still a dang good Rick Dias. They kinda messed up the feet; the skeletal parts don't even clip into the armor...they just sit there and are secured by the top of the foot armor, and it's not that solid. Still! The rest is good. It comes with the clay bazooka, the two back-mounted beam guns, a solid-colored saber, and all the size and presence of a Dom with the majesty of a Gundam-ish thing. G Frame Zeta Gundam! No transformation here, just the suit, rifle, and shield. It moves well enough, but somehow not quite as good as all the others. Then again, I feel like almosy any toy of the Zeta has something problem or another, due to the busy design. Doesn't make it any less cool, though. The only gripes I've got with this one are the shoulders and elbows. They work, but somehow it's always a bit of a struggle to get everything looking good. Not that it's a bad figure! G Frame Hyaku Shiki! The Shiki is cool no matter what, so naturally this is pretty awesome. It's a little thicc vs how thin it's usually portrayed, but it's still cool. The Shiki comes with a beam rifle and a clay bazooka and that's it, but you don't need much else. The body of the suit is a bland gold, which is fine, but I have been spoiled by previous chromed model kits. There's no reason not to like the Shiki! G Frame GM Command Space Type (also just a regular land type). This was a redesign for the 0080 movie, but they eventually find some background info as to why these GMs look different, so this is a GM Command type! Either in space or on land. Beyond that: I LOVE IT. Most of them aren't in these classic GM colors, so when this design is in these colors...I'm on it. They added a different backpack and shield for the land version, but the land ones are usually in different colors...like, to match the shield. Not that it matters. Still looks fine, and fhe Federation is no stranger to just using whatever parts they have on hand. Besides the shields and backpacks, there's also the weird canister beam rifle, and the machine gun you often saw on 0083 Stardust Memory. That's a lot of words, so if you didn't read it: this figure is awesome and I love it. It's mine. G Frame Gundam Ground Type! This is the one that convinced me to get more G Frame figures. It is the best little Ground Type interpretation, seriously. If you love the Ground Type and just want a small representation to mess with, then this will do nicely. The Ground Type has the machine gun, shield, and cannon, but no beam rifle. It even comes with the optional GM head repair, if you want to collect multiples. G Frame Gundam Narrative. This takes place after Unicorn, except THIS Gundam is a testbed suit for the Nu, which was years ago, at this point in UC. So it's another little "we got a special suit that isn't special but it IS" kinda deal. The neat thing about this is that it's kinda limited. Since it's a testbed, the thing isn't fully armored or equiped, so there are a few packs for various weapons. This one has the B Pack, which seems like a prototype fin funnel (except these don't fly freely - they're wired). I don't know why they didn't just...armor the thing. And give it a gun and a shield. But whatever. I'm not the mobile suit expert. Couple'a G Frame Gundams! I bought the RX-78 and the Rollout Colors version, because what's a Gundam collection without a few thousand RX-78s?! NOTHING, THAT'S WHAT. These are excellent little figures, though I do still lament the lack of anything cool about the sabers. They're just solid black or silver plastic! Even Assault Kingdom often cast them in clear, at least. The G Frame series embellishes the designs a bit, so you get a unique version of the RX-78 (to add to your OTHER Unique-versions-of-the-RX-78s). It comes with the rifle, shield, saber, and the Rollout colors came with the bazooka (no idea why it was skipped for the standard one). There aren't a whole lot things getting in the way of the RX-78's movement, so it's always a fine choice in any Gundam series. It's no exception here! I found this in Chicago, which is great, because it's right in time to cover G Frame! I had stayed away from these at first, since I was still disappointed that Assault Kingdom was gone (and Universal Unit sucked). These are larger, at about 4.5 inches, so they didn't line up with Assault Kingdom. On top of that, they do a similarly annoying thing, where they separate what you need into two sets: an armor set, and a frame/weapon set. If you get the armor set, then you get an immobile frame which amounts to a static figure. If you get the frame set, then you get a movable frame and some weapons, but no armor. However! They made a very smart decision when bringing them to the US (you can still find them at Target): they just put it all in one box! Granted, I still feel like the immobile frame is pointless, but it DOES fold up into a stand, so I guess it does something. Anyway, like I said: I was gonna stay away from these, but my buddy @fbns_photography kept sending them to me, and damnit, they ARE good! The movable frame works with the armor nicely, they've got a decent set of gear (though the sabers are usually just black), and the mild build is fun with a satisfying result. Amazingly I didn't have this Alex yet, and surprise, it's great! It even has the arm guns! The design is embellished a bit too, so it doesn't feel like I'm buying the same Alex yet again. All in all, if you were ever interested in these G Frame kits, I'd check one out! Universal Unit Gundam X - the only Universal Unit figure (out of the ones I have) that I like. Not sure why! Just seems like all the joints work better. Almost all of them are so stiff to work with, plus they miss essential accessories to awkwardly split them into two sets. They did that here, but all I miss out on is the beam saber (which I would have liked, but I don't mind so much here). The figure comes with the shield rifle, which doesn't turn into shield mode, but that's fine. I don't really get the optional defense-or-offense choice. Then, of course, it has the entire Satellite Cannon system which can open up into the titular X panels (with reflective stickers). It feels complete enough. Universal Unit Hy-Gogg! Once again, Universal Unit broke this into two sets for no good reason. One arm is jointed, the other is immobile. You need both sets to get two jointed arms and...another one with immobile arms I guess. It's dumb. A stupid way to make this series. Universal Unit GM Custom! The Universal Unit series was disappointing all around, but I had to make a few exceptions. The GM Custom is a favorite, and I was still trying to round out Assault Kingdom, at the time (even with these disappointing replacements). I didn't realize that they would do incredibly minor things to split up a suit's gear, though. They did with the Gundam, but the Origin version has a lot of different items. The GM Custom has a rifle, saber, and shield. ...so they made one with a saber and shield and one with just a rifle. Nice. Couldn't just put that rifle in the pack? Anyway, it's decent enough, but once again, Universal Unit is a pretty limited series in terms of articulation. Universal Unit Gundam, The Origin style. This one has some more changes vs the original, but they're kinda hard to see here. Not to mention the fact that some changes happen over time in the manga. This particular version combines two different Gundam sets to get all the weapons in one place. There's the standard Beam Rifle and shield, a beam saber, and a newer-looking Hyper Bazooka. The most obvious change is the removal of one saber and a small shoulder cannon being set in it's place. It's on two hinges so it swings forward easily. It's my favorite change for the Gundam in Origin. The figure itself is better than Char's Zaku, but it still can't hold a candle to the ease of use with Assault Kingdom. You kinda gotta hold the skirt armor on when you push the legs forward, and it's just kinda stiff and awkward to pose. Ah, Universal Unit. Not only is it kind of a dumb name, but it was the replacement for Assault Kingdom. That sucked. You see, Assault Kingdom were complete figures with very little assembly involved, and they were so much fun to pose! Universal Unit were mini-models that were technically fully articulated, but they're limited when compared to Assault Kingdom. They're also stiffer, require stickers, and...well they're just not fun. They look nice enough, but what's the point if they're not also FUN? That said, I did buy a few to try and fill in my Assault Kingdom ranks, since they're the same size. It just wasn't the same. Char's Zaku is based on how it was redesigned (slightly) for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. I do like that design, but this model is stiff and unwieldy. It's ridiculous, when you consider what the Assault Kingdom Zaku could do! Hardly a replacement at all. Assault Kingdom Red Frame Astray! I haven't seen or read anything that involves this suit. I saw it, loved the design, the colors, and the sword. That was enough. The design of the suit allows for some great articulation, though it only comes with the sword. Normally this thing also has a shield and a beam rifle. According to my incredibly quick scan of the wiki, the pilot doesn't like using energy on beam sabers and beam rifles, so he mostly uses the sword. Sounds like me! This is somehow hidden inside ANOTHER Gundam and is revealed down the line a bit. The pilot is the one, the only: MASTER ASIA. He is everything and everywhere and can do anything. He doesn't even really need the Gundam. He can take down mobile suits with his bare hands or a freaking CLOTH. Still, if the Goddamn Master Asia is going to have a mobile suit, it should be the one that looks like a Dracula. Anyway, the AK version ones with a surprising amount of hands, his trusty Beam Cloth (yes, I know), and a pair of Darkness Finger hands that are metallic red. It's pretty much everything you need, besides his horse. Gundam. His horse Gundam that is piloted by an actual horse and turns into a freaking platform on which he can dramatically stand. Assault Kingdom Sazabi! This one was a deluxe, so it came with a ton of stuff! Swords, gun....swords! Lotta melee stuff. It's pretty good all around! Moves well, holds all the stuff, and has a bunch of clear sticks so you can mount the funnels in mid-flight. Assault Kingdom Nu Gundam! I'll keep this short, since I have an amazing Nu Gundam to cover once I get to MSiA. In the mean time: This one does what it needs to, though I would have liked at least one saber. BUT...it does have a setup of stands to show the Fin Funnels flying around, so I get it. The Nu comes with a rifle, bazooka, shield, fin funnel backpack, and three separated fin funnels (with another backpack with less funnels). Assault Kingdom Jegan! I love this little grunt. So simple. So cool. This is what happened when the Federation decided to make something new for once, instead of continously upgrading the original GM. The Jegan is about as standard as you can get: gun, shield, saber. The design is even more simplified than the GM, but more stylish. It's lighter, faster, and more dangerous! Assault Kingdom ReGZ! Another good one, and better than the Hybrid Mobile Suit one. It's got the shield and rifle, plus a clear saber (which is really cool, but it's hard to see the details, so we'll go into that more on the MSiA - I can already sense your excitement). Some AK figures had clear sabers, but not all, which was an oversight. Didn't they know that clear stuff is the best? All the time? I'd be clear myself if it were possible. Not like, invisible. Assault Kingdom Zeta Gundam! This is pretty bare bones, but that's fine. The more complicated the Zeta gets, the more flimsy it always turns out to be (though maybe that's just MSiA). Without it's transformation, the Zeta is a solid toy robot with a rifle, shield, beam saber, and another saber blade for the barrel of the rifle. The sabers are just white, sadly, but the right laser pointer flash can light it up a bit. So, this one is pretty good! Assault Kingdom Gouf Custom! Not the best Gouf Custom, but a pretty dang good one. It comes with the most important items: the shield gatling gun, the heat saber, and the tri-barreled machine gun under the shield. There's no wire attachment, but it wouldn't be tough to make one, if you're so inclined. The big thing to remember with this one, is that you should watch 08th MS Team, if you haven't. The Gouf looks cool now because it is a cool robot.
