One of the most heartbreaking things I saw regularly during my career working in animal shelters was when people had to give up their beloved companions due to illness, disability, hospitalization, or going into long term care where pets were not allowed. I talked about this recently on my podcast interview with @thecompanionscollective, and it’s the reason I chose to support @elderdogcanada with my @tails_of_the_world fundraiser. ElderDog are different from other dog rescue organizations in that they not only foster and rehome dogs in need of a permanent placement, but their volunteers also help support elderly people who need help to keep their pets with them. This might look like providing temporary fostering while the owner is hospitalized, help providing exercise, delivery of pet food and supplies, or providing transportation to grooming and veterinary appointments. Besides raising money, I hope to help spread the word about ElderDog Canada and the amazing work they do. We have several local branches (or “pawds” here in southern NB - @elderdogmoncton @elderdogsj @elderdogcanadafred, and they are always looking for volunteers to foster or provide other support like transportation, dog walking, etc. Please reach out to them if you are able to help out! A lot has been going on the past few weeks and I’ve been cherishing moments of thinking about Phee. The day she lay to rest was also Charlie’s adoption anniversary as well. He was very sweet and sat with me that evening. While he’s very different than Phee, he is still such an important part of my life. He’s my gremlin, raccoon, little potato, and snarf. Cooper passed away this evening. Tomorrow would have been exactly one month since we found him on the side of the road and took him in. We are amazed by how much we grew to love him in such a short time. Just days ago, we agreed to keep him forever. Even though we logically knew that his “forever” might not be very long, it didn’t make losing him tonight any easier. He had a good day today, with happy energy, snuggles, kisses, play, and naps. While we are heartbroken over the loss of our time together, we are so honored to have given him a happy, safe, and love-filled final month of life. Cooper will always be our special boy, and will be so missed. ❤️ Thank you again to everyone who donated to making Cooper’s care possible. With God’s perfectly divine timing, the amount raised came to almost exactly cover what we spent on his vet bills, and now on his cremation costs. What a beautiful evening to go for a walk, a walk with a pup who needs a walk. Here in Victoria, I #volunteer with a program called #ElderDog (@elderdogsaanichtosidney), where I walk a dog for a senior citizen who, for whatever reason, are not able to walk their dog(s) but instead of having to surrender them, they apply for this program and a team of volunteers will come and walk their dog(s) on various days at various times. Can be anxious especially when his people leave. Can be reactive around other dogs, and has a fairly strong prey drive. Great with people including children. A typical Husky. November 24, 2022. The day Miles came home. Miles was living with his previous owner in a car for months. No shelter would take them both in. Miles was years old, dog reactive, and has a bite history. To be blunt, he probably wouldn't make it long in a Texas shelter. Someone heard of their situation and contacted someone they barely knew, who has rescued animals before. That person knew a friend of a friend of my mother's, and my mother had offhandedly mentioned she missed having a dog. Through this grapevine, miles came to live with us.
