NATURE OF THE BEAST (1995) This is a really underappreciated gem of a movie starring two great action and B movie veterans in Eric Roberts (Best of the Best, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Star 80) and Lance Henriksen (The Terminator, Aliens, Hard Target). Henriksen is a salesman on the road who keeps hearing news on the radio of a nasty serial killer in the area named the "Hatchet Man" after a string of recent and brutal murders. After driving by a hitchhiker and then stopping at a roadside diner for lunch, he then comes into contact with the hitchhiker, played by Roberts, who is rather disgruntled about not being picked up and as what first seems a fairly routine conversation soon turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse between the two men as both are clearly hiding secrets that they are happy to taunt each other about but as things start to escalate between the pair it soon becomes very clear that one of these men may be the Hatchet Man himself. It's a battle of will and wits as things start to turn violent, and no one is who they claim to be. This is a cracking little 90's thriller that features our two leads in Henriksen and Roberts sparring off one another very well and it's a real gem that leaves you on the edge of your seat right up until the very end. Both Henriksen and Roberts really play off each other well here, and both are menacing in equal measure up until the end and final reveal. This is a dark psychological thriller well worth watching, and it's a real 90s gem well worth seeking out, especially if you're fans of Henriksen, Roberts, or both. We also have the late great Brion James (48 Hrs, Tango and Cash, Steel Dawn) turn up as an overconcerned Sherriff. Nature of the Beast is well worth checking out. Also, look out for Eric Roberts' wife, Eliza, in a small role as a waitress. She was originally cast as Shelly Dubisky but she had just gotten pregnant and was starting to show, so that meant no shirtless scene in the back of the car with Otter. Love Is a Gun (1994) A crime-scene photographer can’t resist giant Calvin Klein underwear. Erotic thrillers from the ‘90s go all kinds of places, but this one needs a video store shelf all to itself, labeled “DREAM NOIR” or maybe “GHOST HUMPERS”. Eric Roberts stars as the new recruit in the Los Angeles Police photography unit, who lives with a shrill girlfriend (played by Roberts’ real-life wife, Eliza, who you may remember from “Animal House” - do you boys mind if we dance with your dates?). The police are having a photo contest (theme: “A Woman’s Place”), and Eric Roberts finds a photo in his locker of a beautiful woman but the image magically disappears. Luckily her name and address is written on it, so he calls her up and asks her to model for him. She’s a nut (Kelly Preston, aka Mrs. John Travolta) and somehow he ends up taking the same photo that he already saw (whoa), and also is seduced when she wears giant Calvin Klein (men’s?) underwear and a fruit brassiere. Or is he seduced? It might have been a dream! Meanwhile, the great R. Lee Ermey murderers innocent kids and does some classic R. Lee Ermey yelling. Does this movie make sense? No. Does Eric Roberts borrow an outsized performance from Nicolas Cage? Yes! The eros is tepid and the plot is frustrating, but watching Eric Roberts blubber, shake, and wail for the last five minutes was definitely worth sitting through a handful of advertisements on TubiTV. This has got to be one of the weirdest straight-to-video movies ever made - it’s like David Lynch directing “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”. Check it out if you are into struggling young people who drive a cherry ‘60s Lincoln Continental (also borrowed from “Animal House”?), fun shenanigans of police photography units, or mystical watch repairmen.
