This piece was made with vintage buttons that I hand painted and then hand stitched to canvas. This piece is so unique as I don't think I can replicate this. Plus it was huge, but I can't remember where it went...It all started when I found some vintage wooden bingo numbers and made some molds out of plasticine. My most popular art piece to date is called "Relish In Growing Older". The first 3D letter piece I made and sold was 20 years ago in London. So I thought it would be fun to make a black version. New painting for "Small Wonder" art show happening next week at @janssenartspace. Fifteen years ago I participated in my first art show in Palm Springs at Janssen Art Space when it was on Indian Canyon. The gallery is now in a Wexler Building on Tahquitz near the new Cultural Center. This piece is inspired by Eames Hang It All and my signature colors that I have been using for 20 years. The last one I made was on canvas, but I decided to make this one on wood, so you can kind of see the wood grain in certain lights which I think is very cool.

I'm slowly prepping for the next art show next month @Janssenartspace. It was 15 years ago when I participated in Stevens "Small Wonder" art show, my first show in Palm Springs! This piece was once all white, but I felt like it needed some color so I added Palm Springs Orange. The piece was inspired by a game I played as a kid which I think was called Othello where you flip the round pieces from black to white and vise versa. Do you think my artwork is happy? Did you know that I started making art for me because subconsciously I needed to make art after I had a traumatic experience back in 1996? My car caught fire while I was driving to Fashion College. Flames at my feet...Even though this happened so long ago I still get triggered when I smell smoke while driving. I use my art to help me it's my therapy. In turn it makes me happy when others buy my art because I hope it makes them happy. Win win!
I really enjoyed making this piece back in the Spring. Perhaps because I was in a happy place 😀 Does it make you feel happy? To make sure that the colors connect properly I always play a game with color. It can be really hard to figure out the color placement. Twenty years ago when I first starting making art for me it would be a bit hit and miss with my color placement. Plus a lot of squinting. Nowadays I use Photoshop to make sure the colors gel correctly. Which means I have a digital print somewhere waiting to go onto a product on one of my online print shops like @Threadless....

Hello! How are you? Personally I have been in a bad place and that's not cool. Thank you mum for telling me that all these bad things that have happened to me recently are not my fault. Just life stuff that are out of my control. Now that it's getting cooler I can start to use my studio space again. So one thing that makes me feel better is hanging out in the studio and painting and making things. There is something so therapeutic about creating things with your own hands. What do you do to make yourself feel happier?
I created this piece to remember a memory. A sweet memory as a child of a game I would play. Did you know that my artwork is all about memories and stories? This piece is on denim. The reason I started painting on denim was because my old boss at Ted Baker was throwing out denim fabric samples. They would have meters upon meters of the denim and as an artist just starting out it seemed natural to start painting on the denim. However you can't just paint on denim, there is a trick that you need to do first to prime it. I wonder if you can guess what I would use to prime it...

When I lived in England there was a silent rule to never use the word "awesome". Unless of course if we were describing something that deserves awe. The word is far too American. I used to cringe when I used to hear that word. Other words I'd use instead would be "brilliant", "wonderful", "great", "amazing"and more. Today as an artist that loves writing and word play it makes me smile every time I here the word awesome - how about you? Or do you hate the word?
In four weeks time the girls and I will travel to England. I made a stitch painting over 10years ago (while we were in Canada) which I then digitized and added to my online shops. Which do you prefer - the black or the white one? I normally do a summer sale in my online shop in August, but we will be away. So should I do a sale before or after our trip?
On the news yesterday they said California is the most fun state in America. Would you agree? My art is all about fun and positive things - which piece of mine makes you smile the most?
Anyone else feeling exhausted? Having Daisy, the dog and I sick this past week or two has not helped me run the show. Chores and my art biz has been on a little hold. Yesterday was a wipe out. I couldn't function at all... Taking a break is ok, but for me if I take a break the next days work load is a lot harder...any tips to feel better are much appreciated.

The first time I made this piece was twenty years ago when I was in London. But with a smaller 3D letter inspired by candy. Which made the piece feel edible - what do you think? When I moved to California I started making bigger letter pieces inspired by fridge magnets. But I loved the idea of making something that was once colorful into something that was clean and white. Since we returned to Palm Springs I've sold four of these white letter pieces. So I thought it would be fun to color this one. Which one do you prefer - color or white?
This is my biggest piece so far using the smaller plaster letters that I make. It is 24" x 36". I was going to call it "Love Letter". As if a letter to a lover. But I decided to change it to "Love Letters" which is better - what do you think? It's currently on show at @janssenartspace but you can view it now on my website shop under the category "Love Letters". The sentences I have used are pulled from my collection of words I have kept over the years. All the sentences are like statements about love except the last sentence which I absolutely love the most - "Don't go anywhere I love you too much" ❤️
I created this piece in 2019. It was at first white, however I decided to add color to it. Do you think it's better? Color or white? What I think is fun is that you can read love across and down the piece. This happened by pure chance and was not at all planned. Should I make more colorful 3D letter pieces?
As most of you know, I don't do anniversaries. Today it's my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Which I think is super special. My mum loves to send me t-towels (I've received several over the years) including London themed and royalty ones including Megan and Harry's wedding - which we take delight in if we need to mop something up off the floor. So I decided to make a personal t-towel not just for them but for everyone that will be at their party on Saturday. Who thinks that is a great idea? Being given flowers is lovely. But what do you think if you are given a personalized painting? Recently I have made three commissions that were gifts for others. One of which I was able to see the recipient in person. He was so blown away and loved the custom piece! It gives me so much joy that I can create pieces that are personal and special. Morning! I am asking a question today...what is the first thing that you think of when you open your eyes? Is it food? Coffee? An issue? A person? Or maybe something else? I used to have a piece of my art that I stared at when I woke up that gave me extra help. But I just sold it - I guess I need to find another piece or make one. Are there some words or an affirmation that you would like to look at when you wake up? If there is something specific please let me know.

So I thought it would be fun to digitize my new heart painting and make some products for my @threadless shop. What do you think of them? Twenty years ago in London I starting to create art with plaster. It made sense to me especially because as a kid I loved plaster of paris and at school I would make textured art pieces. Back then as a teenager I thought art doesn't have to be flat and I still think that. In London I would make fun colorful pieces that made me happy. I only recently realized that I was making these fun paintings to help me cope with one of the first traumas that I dealt with as an adult - almost dying in a car when it caught fire while I was driving along the freeway / duel carriageway. When I first moved to California we went to Mendocino (a small town on the coast where one of my favorite movies was filmed - Overboard) and I saw some colorful heart shaped chocolates. I then started making small heart shaped art pieces. Most of them were given as wedding gifts or for friends. So it is with great pleasure and delight that I have created a larger version of those small pieces that I used to make. The piece measures 36" square. This Saturday I will be showcasing nine new paintings at the group art show at @Janssenartspace The name of this collection of paintings is "Love Letters". They were inspired by the many people that I love in my life. Over the years I’ve written poems and fun little notes including overheard conversations or inspiring quotes. These were written in many little books. However, when I moved to California in 2005, I edited them and compiled them into one book. In this group of paintings, I have used these words to inspire and create this loving artwork.
My artwork is all about memories and stories. I read the other day that Picasso said this "painting is just another way of keeping a diary". I think I have to agree with him. How about you? I have lots of funny memories. Do you? Last week I remembered something from my 6th form years that made me smile. It was a memory from an English class. Think we were learning about Chaucer - so it was not an easy class. I remember one day while listening to the teacher that there was something next to my eye in my peripheral vision. The girl next to me was holding up a small plastic ruler. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was measuring my eyelashes because she'd never seen such long lashes. Do you have funny memories that you would like to remember? What's in a name? Do you like your name? Do you wish you had a different name? One of my uncles actually changed his name legally because he hated his given name. As a kid at school I sometimes wished that I had an easier name to pronounce. The teachers just couldn't pronounce my name right ever (it's Emma-lean not Emma-line). Not one teacher could get it right and I even had one form tutor who was a PE teacher always called me Em-lyn (Emlyn Hughs was a football player). So for two years twice a day at registration I would accept that my name was Emlyn. To simplify things I used to introduce myself to people as "Em" but then that too would cause confusion as then the person would want to know what "Em" was short for....Today though I love the fact that my name is unique. While I was at 6th form college I remember an English trip to Stratford (Shakespeare's birthplace) and a song coming on the radio on the coach. It was by Hot Chocolate, a song called "Emma". However if you listen to the lyrics of the song they are singing a song about a girl called Emmaline - pronounced the same as my name. Can you imagine the delight of my peers when they heard the lyrics. Lots of laughter. Especially when Errol Brown literally screams my name at the end. Kids can be so mean and I was so embarrassed. But nowadays I love my name and also the song - it actually makes me smile every time I hear it. Did you know I make a variety of custom art pieces? Coachella is happening this weekend and next. When I lived in London I would go to gigs every week. Sometimes twice. But when I moved to California we didn't see anything like that until we went to Coachella in 2010. It then seemed like I saw 5 yrs worth of music gigs in one weekend. Did you know I love music? I learned to play the piano at 5yrs and played violin from 7-18yrs for free thanks to the British school system. However when I went to art school I was told it was music or art...just this week I got excited again about music and how it connects to my art. Lyrics can be so powerful and so too the written word. As a text based artist I feel music and art go well together. Being an artist is a brave thing to do. What do you think? Do you agree? As an artist you literally are putting your heart and soul out there for the rest of the world to see. These past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for me. Some wonderful highs and some terrible lows. So to help my soul I've started to create some new 3D text based pieces and I can tell you that it has been helping me a lot. I'd forgotten the joy it gives me to make something with my hands. Art can heal pain. Now that Mackenzie's anniversary has past I'm hoping things will be better. For those of you that deal with grief you know better than anyone how this goes. At the weekend I was told I was very good at being miserable. That was true because this time of year I am always out of sorts - and that's understandable. Last year I was so out of it I was prone to sleep walking.... However yesterday I began to feel a sense of happiness. Could I be happy? I managed to work, clean, remember to brush my teeth and take the kids to see a movie. The new Mario movie is pretty good btw. I also felt productive in the studio too. My plan was to just finish the art pieces that I had started for the next group art show called "Material World" at @janssenartspace on the 29th April. But I got inspired and made a new piece. I may even make some more....watch this space 😀 Day 14 of #the100dayproject (I'm still trying to do it...but I'm getting distracted)

Yesterday Mackenzie would have turned 9. There is not one day that we don't think of her. I normally like to do art projects in her memory. This year I created one early with @queen_of_crystal that I've already shared with you but will share again. Unfortunately yesterday I was out of sorts, so I couldn't post or share anything about this project. Hope you understand...
So during Desert Open Studios I got some new ideas on how to make my letters. Have you heard of stencil casting? Between guests at the weekend I was researching how I can do this and also look into making the letters even bigger. In the meantime I'm going to make some big letters to experiment with sizing. If it works that piece will be in the next show "Material World" at @janssenartspace next month.

After selling my large painting "Pin Points" this weekend it made me remember the time when I made a print inspired by this series of work for an Italian wallpaper company. I have always thought that art doesn't have to be flat and that it doesn't have to be on walls. So it was fun to see the company style the wallpaper on the ceiling. During pandemic there seemed to be a lot of desert drama. Let's just say our neighbor at the time provided a lot of entertainment. I made this piece to remember the madness. Not only was it hot, but the humidity was unbearable. We've had so much cool weather recently that right now I can't wait for the heat to come back.
