Miller has worked out that he can get out of therapy by giving me hugs…i can confirm this tactic works 🥰😂 Despite the extra hugs, he’s made some great progress this intensive. He’s really built up some strength in his hands. When I clap his hands together now he’s keeping them open, when normally he would make a fist. He’s also sitting through entire 50-min sessions of using the eye gaze device which is great news as this is the path we will be going down. He’s worked bloody hard this intensive and I’m so proud of him, especially this week. He’s smashing it 💪💪💪

Last week, Cha and Stacey presented an AAC access lecture and practical session with @melb_uni Speech Pathology Students. Cha started the day by introducing ways a person might access their device, including touch, switch scanning, eye-gaze, and alternative mouse. For the second half of the day, the students were divided into four groups. Each group allowed some hands-on experience using four different access methods related to a case scenario. These included Eye Gaze access with the TD I-13, Switch Access with the TD I-110, Alternative access with the Point it joystick and Quha head mouse using TD Snap, and exploring different touch accommodations with the Speech Case Tablet. There was quality discussion about positioning, making adjustments to best match a person's skill levels, and keeping things efficient for an AAC user. Have you heard of eye gaze communication before? A high tech eye gaze device is a type of assistive technology that us speech pathologists may recommend for our clients with severe disabilities who may be non speaking and not have limb movement or have accurate/intentional limb movements ie. presenting with ataxia or spastic movements for example. Eye gaze can come in the form of high tech, like pictured, which in simple terms, the device itself works similar to a computer functionality wise but we load the chosen vocabulary/communication app to the device as well as books, number activities, literacy activities and other educational activities and programs. How do we teach children or adults to use their eyes? We do so through LOTS of modelling of vocabulary that is functional & motivating & also cause-and-effect activities to teach a child/adult to focus their eyes for a given amount of time to activate something on the screen or to access different parts of the screen. Eye gaze can also come in the form of low tech ie. paper based - no technology! Here’s a few real life examples of how I have personally used low tech eye gaze with clients (*eye gaze is not something I use often and as I am no longer upskilling in this area, I will be referring clients on who require eye gaze support): 1. Example 1 Child using their eyes to communicate yes/no. The speech pathologist holds up the YES card in one hand and the NO card in the other & the child shifts their eyes to select/make their request. 2. Example 2 Child using their eyes to communicate with a PODD book. A communication partner ie. parent/SP assists by pointing to a page and symbol or line/column and the child may use a yes/no head gesture or their eyes (looking towards or away for example) to let their communication partner know if the page /line/column has the symbol (word) they want to communicate or not 3. An adult after a TBI who became a quadriplegic & lost use of their voice box but could use their eyes and still spell. Again, this was partner assisted ie. SP/spouse would hold up an alphabet board & point to each line where the adult would use their eyes to select a line & then a letter.

Today I was delivered two disability aids. A floor stand/mount for my @tobii_dynavox_uk eye gaze device. Thank you to DSA (disabled students allowance) Already being able to use my eye gaze in bed is amazing. As when I am laid down but propped up I am in a lot less pain. And then my @theactivehandsco small item hand grip thing. It’s really awesome already just doing a little doodle with it. I absolutely love how you can change the angle so easily of whatever you are using with it. It is really comfortable too. Due to my Tourette’s my motor tics often throw things and also I struggle to grip with the finger tics and the pain. Over the last couple of weeks I have introduced one of my students to #tinkercad. During her first time using it she decided to design her own Stitch character. What makes this remarkable is this was design using no mouse or touch screen! The student uses eye gaze to control the computer and it tracks her eye movement.
