Day 12 - Waste not! Sustainability is important to use all on this farm, and minimising waste is part of this. You only have to visit our huge heaps of used metal and timber in the back field “recycling area” to know that, like many farmers, not much gets thrown away. Equally the Coffee shop has played a huge role in our reduction of waste since its opening in 2007. We can freeze surplus sausages unsold in the Farm Shop ready to use on a busy day in the Coffee Shop and send over our vegetables when they are starting to shrivel, they’ll quickly be turned into soup. The team in the coffee shop will magic a rhubarb or apple mountain into tasty cakes and chutneys and use up the farm shop’s surplus milk to make DELICIOUS coffees for you all to enjoy. Equally if it’s quiet in the Coffee Shop, the team there will still be busy, producing goodies for the farm shop, rather than wasting time by standing about in the hope that a customer might arrive. If there is a wee bit of cake that needs eating up, we can be sure that the farm team will gobble it up during their coffee break... anything to avoid waste!! Day 9 - This Farm Shop loves: ORGANIC We are proud to be organic and to be selling only our own home produced organic beef, lamb and mutton in the Farm Shop. Our beef and lamb is 100% finished on organic grassland, with organic arable silage being grown to supplement winter feed. Day 5 - 2004-2024: Our Farm Shop is 20 years old! It all started with sheep & a BBQ lamb box up for grabs...keep reading! All the lamb we sell in the Farm Shop is 100% grass fed and born and bred on this farm - but how did it all start? Mark kept a small flock of Suffolk sheep, the “Pelaw” flock, from the age of 8. Many happy days were spent lambing and caring for these sheep with the help of retired farmer Joe Moore, and an 8x4 foot board was covered with rosettes won at shows in Tow Law, Hexham and at Durham County Show. Anyone that thinks it’s a good idea to open a Farm Shop on the top of a hill, above the Durham snowline, in the middle of nowhere must be mad. Day 2. 2004-2024: Our Farm Shop is 20 years old! Free flapjack in the Farm Shop! When we first opened the Farm Shop it was just a butchery and only used to be open on Friday mornings. Who can remember those days? To thank customers for making the journey up the hill and to pacify them whilst we painstakingly cut a pork chop, there was always free freshly brewed coffee and flapjack straight from the oven on the counter. This Friday morning there will be flapjack on the counter again for all farm shop customers to enjoy…but you’ll have to go to the Coffee Shop for your caffeine fix @rountoncoffeeroasters If you’d like to read more about how we started the butchery, have a look at the link in our bio. Here is Granny Gledson’s famous flapjack recipe for you to try at home. This is the same recipe that we still use in the coffee shop today! Broom House Flapjacks 1. Melt 8oz butter or margarine with 4-5 tbsp golden syrup 2. Meanwhile measure out 12 oz porridge oats, 6oz plain flour, 4 oz dessicated coconut, 8 oz granulated sugar and 1.5 tsp bicarb of soda. 3. Mix dry ingredients together and stir into melted butter/syrup 4. Place into a lined baking tin and firm lightly. 5. . Day 6 of #ScottishAgritourismMonth Our agritourism journey! Angus and I bought the farm in 2008, we were living in Glenlomond, a tiny village near Kinross. With absolutely no buildings on the land, we moved to the farm in spring 2009 with our 3 month-old daughter Katie to live in a static caravan - little did we know that the first 2 winters there would reach low temperatures of -16 degrees! The wood-burning stove Angus installed was literally a lifesaver! Our Scottish Blackface ewe flock was started with ewes from Angus dad’s farm on the Isle of Coll. 4 and a half years later, we had a 2yr old son, Rory, I’d learned a LOT about looking after sheep, lambing, and driving a quad bike….and had finally got planning and built our house. Despite happy days in the caravan, finally moving into the house was a relief! Diversification wasn’t in our plan, until the road was widened unexpectedly for wind farm access in 2013. Having left nursing & the NHS after 20 yrs to concentrate on the kids and the farm, my answer to Angus’s question “what do you want to do” was ‘I’ve always liked the idea of baking & having a wee tearoom’. 😅 In Glenlomond we had lived within walking distance of Loch Leven’s Larder, a fantastic farm shop and restaurant, and took faith from their busy custom despite the countryside location. We had to learn fast and take a huge leap of faith, we chose to build a green oak framed building to make a beautiful space with open countryside views for visitors to enjoy being in the middle of nowhere. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, like everyone else we had to keep adapting and changing what we did to meet guidelines, delivering grocery boxes and opening up takeaway, then outdoor & indoor cafe seating when we could. Our baker Lynda and I could hardly keep up with the demand for homebaked goodies! Last year we opened an events space, The Heron Byre, and hosted a couple of weddings and events - meaning another huge learning curve! Operators achieve higher economic return by targeting populations interested in local food and in agritourism, including customers from towns in the fringe and from the larger nearby urban center. The farm stores catered to a rural idyll that reflects cultural conceptions of farm life. We suggest the multifunctional landscape of the farm store provides economic and cultural benefits, and should be considered as sustaining agriculture. The study revealed that farm store operators in particular share the rural idyll of urban consumers, though agritourism operators are more consciously including rural elements in their operations. It seems the government wants more farmers to add value and produce and provide food and non-food products straight from their farms. DEFRA have now launched the Adding Value grant, as part of the Farm Investment Fund. Grants can be used for buildings, machinery or equipment to help producers add value to eligible agricultural products after they have been harvested or reared. Funding also covers selling of products through buildings for retail, display and retail equipment and automatic vending machines. Eligible products include: *Food and non food crops *Livestock products (dairy, meat, skins and hides) *Non-food crops (fodder, fibres and flowers) Funding will prioritise funding for projects that increase, improve or introduce new processing capabilities. Projects that shorten supply chains and encourage collaboration and partnerships. The minimum grant you can apply for is £25,000 (40% of £62,500). The maximum grant for adding value is £300,000 per applicant business. Don’t delay if you are interested.
