Cooke's belief in the power of the American flag. He rallied the community, going door-to-door, urging everyone to fly a flag on Flag Day. And guess what? Findlay answered the call with flying colors! 🎉 In 1974, thanks to the dedication of Tennyson Guyer and the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, Findlay's status as Flag City, USA became official. 🏛️ On May 7th of that year, Tennyson Guyer introduced House Joint Resolution 1003, setting the wheels in motion for this historic designation. 📜 That makes this year the 50th Anniversary of Findlay being Flag City, USA! But here's the kicker: Findlay's title isn't about flag production—it's about patriotism. #WomanCrushWednesday Margaret Lucetta Allen was born in Cortland, New York on April 8, 1858, to Ethan and Mary Jane (O’Neill) Allen. Around 1868, the family moved to Ohio, living in Ottawa County. She graduated from Genoa public high school, and by 1876, she was teaching school in Risingsun, Ohio at age 18. She married Hamilton Fassett on June 30, 1887, and they moved to Findlay. The couple had five children; Yale Hiram, Charlotte Mae, Guise Beebe, Helen, and Lloyd. Mr. Fassett went into business as a carpenter and contractor. The first office of the H.H. Fassett Lumber and Mill Work was at 525 South Main Street, where Hamilton also had a hardware store and general contracting business. In February of 1905, Hamilton built a lumber mill at 204 East Crawford St., which was barely completed when he passed away from cancer. Margaret found that the affairs of the company were in very bad shape, so paid all of the debts, then purchased the old Duttweiler mill at 221-25 E Crawford in 1916, and expanded the business. She continued to run the lumber business while raising her children, who all became involved in the family business. The Fassett family were members of the First Methodist Church in Findlay, and Margaret was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), and the Woman’s Relief Corps. Mrs. Fassett survived in the male world of business as a widow, and also survived two lightning strikes, and her lumber mill burning. Margaret died at her home at 306 East Hardin Street of cancer on October 22, 1925. She was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery next to her husband.
