With climate change posing a risk to infrastructure, food security and energy supply, 95 percent of land is projected to be flooded by routine high tides by 2100 if no action is taken. " --- United Nations Development Programme When I visited Tuvalu in 2019, I was acutely aware of the threats facing the country as a result of climate change. My research had led me to the 4th smallest country in the world as a place where I could visually capture sea-level rise, an often abstract concept for many. One idea I had was to make portraits of Tuvaluans stood in the shallows, then use a slow shutter speed on my camera to blur the motion of the water to create abstract images that elicited the feeling of the rising water. The fragility of Tuvalu and its existence in the middle of the south-west Pacific ocean is plain to see when viewed from the air. It first struck me as our small plane descended into Funafuti (airport code, FUN) on my first day in the country. I knew that a drone was going to be key in helping communicate this fragility. According to Conservation International, "Increased demand for coastal fish species in the Pacific Islands fuels overfishing, which in turn threatens local food security, livelihoods and ecosystems. What place do drones have in documenting the changes to our world? I first starting using drones as part of my work documenting the climate crisis when I was in Tuvalu in 2019. Its never been the technology itself that interests me, more the alternate perspective that a camera in the sky can give us. When I use a drone, I try to use it in exactly the same way as a would any other camera. I am looking for moments, playing with composition and layering light and colour in a way to create the most impactful images possible with the deepest of meaning. Not every project suits the use of a drone, but when employed well, I think the alternate perspective can add real drama to a photo-story. The ultimate goal though is to have images shot with a drone sit side-by-side with those shot on a 'normal' camera and not have the viewer think about the camera used. If you were reading the Guardian this week, you may have seen two of my images appear in the article "Facing Extinction, Tuvalu considers the digital clone of a country". Have you heard of Tuvalu? If you've followed my work over the past few years you have surely heard of it. But for those who are unfamiliar, Tuvalu is the world's 4th smallest country by land area, with a population of only 11,000 people spread out over a number of islands in a very remote corner of the south-west Pacific Ocean. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the country in 2019, spending almost 3 weeks documenting the effects that climate change is having on the country. The main visible effects are the impacts of rising sea levels. The country's highest point is only a few metres above sea level, placing it in a very perilous position. Some experts predict this may be the first country lost to rising sea levels and climate change impacts. Hundreds of Tuvaluans have already fled to other nearby countries. Research shows that the Tuvaluan people have been mostly misrepresented in mainstream media stories on the devastating effects of climate change in that country. @skynews UK demonstrates that this is still happening. My research in Tuvalu in 2019 concluded that: âA number of significant visual misrepresentations of Tuvalu in media stories on climate change, and that certain narratives have emerged which depict Tuvaluans as helpless victims on a sinking island. The sustained use of these narratives by international media and news outlets serve to perpetuate feelings of local misrepresentation. As a result, locals are concerned about the potential long-term repercussions such misrepresentations may have on the ongoing relationship of future generations of the indigenous people of Tuvalu with their homeland. It is apparent that some media outlets are intent on developing and maintaining the sensationalised narratives of abject environmental degradation, the victimisation of local people, and transnational migration as a response to climate change for the purposes for their target audiences in developed nations (Henry, 2019).â Henry, T. I've noticed a significant increase in interest in my climate-related images, especially those from Tuvalu, every time the climate talks are held.
