“With its deep water and surrounding waterfalls, the Washpool (PwllGolchi in Welsh) feels like a magical place. The Washpool has a long association with the local farming community: it was historically used for sheep dipping and has the remnants of a sheepfold (a dry stone sheep pen) on the far bank. This historic feature has helped to shape the Irfon, creating different depths in the river.” Find out why the Washpool in mid-Wales is such a special place for Catherine Hughes, Community Engagement Officer for the River Irfon Catchment project on our website [link in bio] “Gyda'i dyfroedd dwfn a'i rhaeadrau cyfagos mae'r Pwllgolchi'n teimlo fel lle hudol. During the 2023/24 season we ran our first Kayak Days along the Waikōwhai coastline, giving locals the opportunity to explore the Manukau Harbour from a different perspective. Ran in partnership with Auckland Sea Kayaks and Whitebait Connection- Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, funded thanks to Puketāpapa Local Board Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation and The Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation. We also had help from our brilliant EMR volunteers across both days. These events turned out to be very popular with a combined total of 96 participants coming along from age 8 - 50+ , many trying kayaking for the first time. On the water participants were able to learn how to paddle in double sea kayaks and work as a team. As well as learn about the local birds, fish and habitats present in the Manukau harbour, and what makes them so important, thanks to commentary from Experiencing Marine Reserves guides. While not on the water participants were able to engage with the life and issues facing their local waterways thanks to Whitebait Connection coordinator Anastasia. #kayakingadventures #familyfun #natureexploring #marineeducation #freshwatereducation #marineconservation #freshwaterconservation #communityengagementevents

Today, as part of World Biodiversity Day, a team led by Professor Baran Yoğurtçuoğlu released the first of our captive bred specimens of the critically endangered Lake Acigöl killifish (Anatolichthys transgrediens) into Beytepe Pond at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. This new population is now under protection within the university grounds and represents a back-up population in the event that the naturally occurring population, endemic to Lake Acigöl and nowhere else on earth, is lost. We are so proud of our colleagues in Turkey for all of their hard work and determination, and honoured to have funded and supported the reproduction and reintroduction of one of the 100 most endangered vertebrates on our planet! ✊️ #freshwaterconservation #conservation #nature #endangeredspecies #lostfishes #freshwaterfishes #savingspecies #natureconservation #ourplanet #worldbiodiversityday #biodiversity #biodiversityday

#adriaticsturgeon #sturgeon #conservation #biodiversity #river #wildlifephotography #childrens #school #river #ticino #underwater #freshwaterconservation

“Large, long-term data sets are the key to tracking changes in species populations. Therefore, it’s vital that we keep carrying out these annual surveys. “As we enter the 10th year of our annual survey we’re building a picture of the fluctuations in Great Crested Newt populations. Our results so far show that, in some years, including 2022, these they amphibians are absent from many of the ponds. Over time, we can build a picture to help identify the local and national drivers for these changes and inform conservation for the species." Our PondNet eDNA surveys for Great Crested Newts take us to many different kinds of ponds. Today we visited a pond at St Mary's Bentworth CE Primary School in Hampshire, where we spotted lots of wildlife, including an Emperor Dragonfly and lots of Smooth Newts. 🦎 We were delighted to hear that the school is developing the site to add new ponds next year, providing more habitat for wildlife and a wonderful education resource for the children. 👏 #pondnet #edna #environmentaldna #newt #greatcrestednewt #monitoring #science #freshwaterscience #freshwater #freshwaterconservation #pond #ponds #freshwatereducation #youngscientists #schoolpond #dragonfly #emperordragonfly

Mussels are tricky to carve, a little short on visual gesture, I needed to find other things about them to bring to life for the viewer. The insides of mussels are gooey and ooze out randomly when the shell is partially open. What do you think? These mussels, in particular, have had a hard go, from dams and stream reconstruction that caused water quality to decrease to having to rely on fish to complete their life cycle, there’s a lot up against this endangered species. Fortunately, because they are on the endangered species list, some rules and regulations have led to project redesigns aimed at preserving important habitat areas for the Black Clubshell. 🚨🏅FUNDED BY THREE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS TO PROTECT FRESHWATER RESOURCES 🌱🌊💚 After an outstanding completion of the Freshwater and Community Conservation Externship program with @externhq (formerly ParagonOne), I was opportune to receive the seed fund cycle by National Geographic Society @insidenatgeo and The Nature Conservancy @nature_org to implement Project Conserve Ogun River (Project COR) @conserveogunriver Project COR is a youth-led initiative that provides solutions to freshwater conservation challenges in Nigerian communities. The seed project in 2023 has made significant strides in freshwater conservation and sustainability; 🌱 Removed over 30kg of plastic waste from the river surface 🌱 Sensitized community members on the importance of protecting the river 🌱 Provided recycle bin for proper waste handling and encouraging recycling efforts for the community members to earn complimentary income 🌱 Engaged 50 school children and 12 teachers on conservation efforts and environmental sustainability 🌱 Published 100 copies of an ecobook titled ‘The Loud Cry of Ogun River’ to narrate the river’s story and educate readers on the need to conserve freshwater resources for a sustainable future. Building on the success of the seed project, I received donations from @captainplanetfdn through Season of Solutions Grant to scale up the project. In 2024, the second phase will; 📍engage about 100 school children and 10 teachers on addressing plastic pollution, environmental sustainability and creating innovative solutions to freshwater conservation. 📍More copies of the Ecobook will be distributed to students and schools to have access to environmental resources. 📍Provision of recycle bin to encourage recycling efforts 📍Conduct River mapping using Drone to identify waste polluted areas in the River for an extensive research 🫡💚 I sincerely appreciate our sponsors and partners for their immense support. I appreciate and love my amazing team at Project Conserve Ogun River, cause I couldn’t have done all these alone. #freshwaterconservation #youthleadership #environmentaleducation #digitaltechnology #rivermapping #recycling #ecoliteracy

European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 58pp. DOI: https://doi.org/10.61024/BPGliquoricegouramisEN 𝗔𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 Right from the very beginning, it has been the concern of EAZA and the EEPs to encourage and promote the highest possible standards for husbandry of zoo and aquarium animals. For this reason, quite early on, EAZA developed the “Minimum Standards for the Accommodation and Care of Animals in Zoos and Aquaria”. These standards lay down general principles of animal keeping, to which the members of EAZA feel themselves committed. Above and beyond this, some countries have defined regulatory minimum standards for the keeping of individual species regarding the size and furnishings of enclosures etc., which, according to the opinion of authors, should definitely be fulfilled before allowing such animals to be kept within the area of the jurisdiction of those countries. A beautiful funny anecdote from the field 💗🐢 reposted from @crocodiledunphd "Who, me? Oh, I'm just waving to my adoring fans." The one and only Indian Softshell Turtle Nilsonia gangetica, ladies and gentlemen. They're just so weird looking I can't get over them, and I see them every day. This huge and gorgeous jelly pig was just chilling on the bank underneath a busy road bridge, on a river that flows through agricultural and urban areas. This is another reason why conservation of rivers outside of protected areas is so important - animals don't know boundaries and will move out of core areas looking for new habitat, especially in the monsoon as river swell. These guys look all cute and squishy, but my friend Rishika tells me their name in Hindi is 'kattava' meaning biter, as they have a snappy temperament if you get too close... we left this biter alone to sunbathe along with a mugger, gharial and a chequered keelback watersnake (overall a great herp morning on one small stretch of river!) 🐢🐍🐊 #turtleyawesome #turtle #turtlesofinstagram #tortoise #wildlifephotography #herpetology #herpsofinstagram #conservation #science #reptiles #conservationist #fieldwork #wildlifeofnepal #nepal #zoology #freshwaterconservation #research #naturephotography #reptilesofinstagram #natureisawesome #nationalgeographicexplorer #natgeo #turtlesofinstagram🐢🍀❤️ #turtlemonthofmay #tortoisesofinstagram #reptilesofinstagram

Longnose gar is a species of freshwater fish native to the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence River basin. Longnose gar are ambush predators, often lurking near the water’s surface to surprise their prey, making them great subjects for split shots. What makes them particularly interesting is their ability to breathe air through their swim bladder, allowing them to survive in low-oxygen environments by gulping air from the surface when needed. This individual is a juvenile, measuring approximately 10 cm in length. However, as they mature, longnose gar can grow to be over a meter long, making them one of the largest freshwater fish species in North America. If you've got the latest issue of @britishwildlifemag you may have spotted an article from @rspb about the important role of Marsh Lousewort in fen restoration. The article talks about the work with many of our partners to restore Oxfordshire's alkaline fens by using this plant as an ecosystem engineer. Marsh Lousewort is a root parasite, so it can play an important role in reducing dominance of some other plants, like sedges and rushes, that can cause fens to become overgrown and degraded. It's #TerminologyTuesday Ever heard of moraines? They're like nature's bulldozers, shaping landscapes with debris left by glaciers. Just as rivers create deltas with sediment, glaciers leave behind moraines with soil and rocks. Think of it this way: Picture yourself with a toy bulldozer on a lawn covered in dry leaves. As you push through, some leaves get pushed aside, some forward, and others leave patterns on the grass. That's how moraines form, stretching for kilometers on Earth. There are four main types of moraines: Lateral Moraine: Forms along the sides of a glacier, like ridges on either side. Medial Moraine: Found inside a glacier, where two glaciers meet, forming a line of rocks and dirt. Supraglacial Moraine: Material on the glacier's surface, made up of rocks, earth, and debris. Ground Moraine: Underneath a glacier, creating rolling landscapes covered in vegetation. Terminal Moraine: At the glacier's end, it's a clump of rocks, soil, and sediment, giving clues about the glacier's movement. Moraines are ancient storytellers, revealing the Earth's history. But with global warming threatening glaciers, fewer moraines are forming today, altering landscapes and impacting ecosystems. #ConservationTUC #EducationTUC #Moraine #FreshwaterConservation Graphic credit: Snowbound, 2001 Photo: Lake Moraine, AB

Water Seems Everywhere. In our streams, in our toilets, in our cups, in our showers, in lakes, and oceans. But only a minuscule fragment of the water on earth is drinkable, and an even smaller percentage of that is safe for consumption. Most of us take for granted our access to clean and secure water, but this "basic" isn't so accessible for all. In the Dominican Republic safe drinking water is not a guarantee and water scarcity is a real threat to numerous communities. Our Water Funds project in the Dominican Republic works to address this issue and find ways to to unite public, private and civil society stakeholders around a common goal to contribute to water security through nature-based solutions and sustainable watershed management. Reviving England's Polluted Rivers! Picture England's rivers teeming with life, water clear and ecosystems thriving. 🏞️ That incredibly attainable future starts with transforming how we care for our waterways today. A recent report from the British Ecological Society flags agriculture as the main culprit behind 40% of England's river pollution. But who says old ways cannot be reshaped for the better? To pivot to greener pastures, we need a two-pronged strategy: 🌱 Incentives for farmers are vital. Think beyond current financial rewards and align incentives with the pulse of societal demand for cleaner rivers. Encourage regenerative farming, which minimizes environmental impact while maximizing soil health. It's about giving back to the land that feeds us. 💧 Comprehensive monitoring is the bloodstream of effective regulation. Without it, we are navigating in the dark. Only with robust, wide-spanning surveillance can we truly trace pollution back to its source and understand the complex dynamics at play in our precious freshwater ecosystems. With the agricultural landscape cradling so much of England's natural beauty, farmers play a pivotal role. Let's champion practices that not only protect but enrich our natural waterways. From hedgerows to buffer strips, from limiting harmful runoff to investing in green infrastructure – the playbook is ready. Our rivers are a mirror reflecting our stewardship of the land. 🌿💦 With every farmer we empower, every policy we adjust and each monitoring strategy we enhance, we edge closer to waters in which life can not only survive but flourish. #FreshwaterConservation #SustainableFarming #Biodiversity Link in bio.

#Repost @aerocene On World Water Day, we stand with the Indigenous Communities of Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc @cuencadesalinasgrandes in Argentina, advocating for the sustainable management of our planet’s precious freshwater resources. For the Indigenous communities, water is life, crucial to their guardianship and livelihood upon this land. These communities are at the forefront of a struggle against lithium mining, which threatens their water supply by using up to 2 million liters of groundwater per ton of lithium extracted. This case highlights a broader issue: the need to balance our quest for renewable energy sources with the imperative to preserve natural resources and respect indigenous rights. The climate emergency further complicates the global water crisis by causing erratic weather patterns, leading to floods in some areas and droughts in others. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our water sources for all life on Earth. To imagine together how digital and physical clouds are interlinked in water cycles and how cities can be reimagined, we invite you to draw upon the ocean of air and interpret a cloud’s multitudinal relations via cloudcities.org. Towards a collaborative artwork with and in solidarity with the communities of Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc, cloudcities.org uses a new economic model called Partial Common Ownership (PCO), whereby each artwork will not be traditionally owned by anyone, but will instead be passed into a unique form of collective stewardship, in which the works’ temporary caretakers will serve the communities’ ongoing efforts to maintain their ecosystem.
