Lately, I've been out of spoons. If you don't know what that means, it's a metaphor for the amount of physical, mental, and emotional energy you have to give at any point in time throughout the day. You start with a certain number, say, ten spoons, and hand them over throughout the course of the day. To your spouse, to your kids, to your friends, to random strangers you interact with. And then at the end of the day, when someone invariably sets a giant bowl of something in front of you and you'd really like to attend to it, you can't. Because you are out of spoons. There are lots of reasons why your spoon supply can run low. Mine, I'm pretty sure, has to do with three things: the unrealistic expectations I have for myself my tendency to compare myself to other people my bull-headed independence and pride You'd think that, since I'm aware of all this, and I've had several decades of life during which to learn how to cope and surrender, I'd have the spoon thing figured out by now. But I don't. I get too wrapped up in my thoughts, too spinny in my head, too focused on everything I've done wrong and will continue to do wrong as I move forward. Shutting out the one voice I really need to be hearing: God's. Because the thing is, God isn't a fan of neon signs or grand announcements. He much prefers quiet whispers when He's talking to us. And yes, I know. It's frustrating, right? Doesn't He know all the static we deal with? I think He does. And I think that's why He whispers. So we have to stop. Set aside the things we've been clinging to (like spoons) even for a fraction of a moment. And just listen. Breathe in. Breathe out. Ask Him to breathe on us. Norms are essential for ensuring a fair and accurate assessment of a student's ability; they play a crucial role in the process of identifying gifted individuals. A national norm is established using a large sample of students who match the country’s demographics, including age, gender, race, ethnicity, region, and socioeconomic status. These norms are used and research demonstrates their effectiveness in schools that reflect national diversity. Local norms calibrate a student’s performance to their fellow students within the same building or district. This method ensures scores are derived from a comparison group closely aligned with the local community's demographics. From May 1-3, our grade 5 students participated in an overnight field study at Albion Hills Conservation Field Centre. Higher-level learning is greatly enhanced by opportunities to interact outside of the typical classroom environment. Grade 5 students furthered their understanding of scientific concepts linked to ecology, astronomy, and living things, while immersing themselves in activities such as wilderness survival skills, geocaching, nature art, or trail biking. 🪄On spelling, reading, … and phonics I’ve been reminiscing about our early homeschool days and they were filled with uncertainty from multiple points of view but I clearly remember when I made the decision to go the phonics way for reading. Marc has become an excellent speller, and I credit our phonics-based approach for this success. (Remember, English is my third language and his second, and we don’t live in an English-speaking country. Yet, he is incredibly good at spelling, grammar and even writing.) Initially, we tried sight words, but I quickly realized they relied too much on memorization without fostering true understanding. It wasn’t logical for us, so we switched to phonics—and what a difference it made! Marc, being a gifted child, didn’t necessarily read sooner because of his abilities, but the phonics program really gave him wings. At just 7 and a half, he tackled a 300-page book about King Arthur, bypassing all the shorter chapter books I had on hand for him to start reading independently. I regret not blogging about our journey back then, not sharing the successes and the doubts. Eight years later, I am certain that our investment in rigorous curricula, especially in math and language arts, has been the key to his academic success now. Marc isn’t just keeping up he’s excelling and thriving with advanced concepts. As we gear up for his 8th-grade, I plan to reintroduce a final year of spelling (phonics based). Ich mochte den Schreibstil tatsächlich sehr gerne. Ich fand es cool, das manche Sätze durchgestrichen und andere Worte wiederholt wurde, das hat einfach sehr gut zu ihrem Psychischen Zustand gepasst. Ich habe es ja auf Englisch gelesen und das konnte ich wirklich super verstehen. Zudem finde ich das Konzept hinter dem Buch eigentlich echt cool. Über die Umsetzung lässt sich streiten, dazu gleich mehr. Ich fand James sehr niedlich und Kenji mochte ich auch irgendwie mit seiner Art. Warner hat natürlich auch was und Adam und Juliette sind auch ganz okay, wobei ich die beiden nicht als Lieblings Charakter abstempeln würde. So was für Sachen mochte ich nicht? Die ganze Story war ziemlich lückenhaft und ging eigentlich immer viel zu schnell. Juliette verschenkt ihre Liebe viel zu schnell, obwohl sie den Typen doch überhaupt nicht kennt. Und jetzt, nach wenigen Tagen, liebt sie ihn schon und kann nicht mehr ohne ihn? Ich mag dieses instand love wirklich nicht und es ist auch total unlogisch hier. Und auch ihre psychischen Traumas wurden ziemlich runter gespielt und vernachlässigt, waren eigentlich gar nicht mehr vorhanden. Mal kurz angeschnitten und dann nie wieder beachtet. Auch andere Zusammenhänge, die ich wegen Spoilern jetzt nicht nennen kann, waren viel zu plötzlich da. Es war einfach kein guter Aufbau der Story. Viel zu viele rote Fäden und keiner richtig ausgearbeitet. My loves 🖤 Today Andrew took K to attend their first behavioral intervention program to help us as parents, properly parent K through his gifts. I haven’t spoken much about this other than to very close friends & family so I’m sharing a bit more about our journey 🫶🏼 We have previously gone through the process of getting an IEP: individualized education plan, however too young to complete the process. I am so excited to see what this program has to offer our family through positive reinforcement, redirection, teaching, & growing in understanding of social & behavioral interactions as a spectrum. Today, two of our grade 7 students were met by Officer Darren of the York Regional Police and were honoured with Good Deed Coins and YRP memorabilia for exemplary leadership and strength of character. This honour was bestowed upon them for finding and turning in a lost purse containing very valuable personal items, which they found on the ground during their off-campus lunch yesterday. The girls turned the purse into to the school’s main office, and the police were then contacted. The officer was able to locate the owner and return the property thanks to the girls’ good deed. La lezione di oggi di scienze era davvero semplice e intuitiva, per alcuni studenti è stata noiosa e scontata. Abbiamo fatto un brainstorming sulla evoluzione della vita sulla Terra, ma ci sono studenti che avrebbero voluto saperne di più. In classe ho rispettato il ritmo di ragionamento della "massa media" di studenti, ma di certo non posso ignorare quella fame di conoscenza che hanno invece altri studenti, che sarebbero stati pronti ad affrontare l'argomento a livelli già molto più ampi. Come fare? Ho risolto preparando un materiale, sugli stessi argomenti, molto più approfondito e che gli studenti possono usare casa per rendere più nutriente la lezione di oggi, in completa autonomia. Ho preparato quindi un documento, copia e incollando da internet da siti affidabili, che sviscerasse ciò che abbiamo toccato in classe in maniera più profonda, accelerando e arricchendo la lezione con concetti che, col resto della classe, affronteremo con calma nei tre anni. Poi ho inserito alcune brevi consegne per rendere più attivo il processo di apprendimento e ho assegnato il tutto come compito extra gli studenti che credo ne gioveranno. Our grade 7 students visited Quèbec City from April 16th - 19th to enhance their French cultural experiences as well as to complement the grade 7 History curriculum which deals with, among other things, "Building the Canadian Nation." Students had the opportunity to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site to see the Dufferin Terrace, Rue de Tresor "Artist Alley", and the iconic Château Frontenac. They made use of the technique of "repoussé" with a hands-on copper workshop to create their own works of art. This isn’t an easy topic to talk about – partly because there’s very little research, and partly because it can get awkward. It’s not always cool to be bright in school is it? and it sparks all kinds of heated debates about ableism and so on. But here we go anyway – I’m diving into the controversy, by popular request! There are many definitions of giftedness – some agree that it’s an advanced ability/ talent in a particular area. Others say that gifted individuals are those with an IQ in the top 2.5% of the population (IQ above 130). Other people point out the flawed nature of IQ testing and so on. You can see that this isn’t straightforward! You might think that these kids will glide through life and have no problems. You’d be wrong sadly – they’re some of the least researched children out there. Profoundly gifted children (those with IQs between 145-160) are particularly poorly understood. Most agree that these children have differently wired brains, allowing them to perceive things differently, meet milestones early, think in a highly creative way, process information rapidly, and they usually have exceptional memories. They also may have perfectionistic tendencies, be prone to anxiety/stress/burnout, and struggle to form meaningful peer relationships. Some of them also have a learning difference or neurodivergence alongside their high intellectual ability, which can sometimes mask their potential. Anecdotally, many parents of gifted children describe them not needing much sleep, being highly focused/intense, easily bored, and emotionally labile. Obviously this isn’t all kids – some highly intelligent children sleep far more than children of average intelligence. It’s definitely not clear cut! For all these reasons, supporting a gifted child with sleep requires understanding of the underlying struggles they might have, as well as a willingness to individualise support. Both of our full-time middle school teachers have been supporting our students as they work on their Senior Exposition projects. These projects have been a long, multistep process, challenging our scholars to develop their time management and project planning skills. The first part of the project was collecting oral history interviews with our elders at Franke Tobey Jones. Students recorded their elders discussing important or significant moments from their childhoods and youth. Many of the interviewees mentioned the impact of growing up during the Space Race and the Civil Rights Movement, but we also heard fun details about working at a donut shop (“Everything was mechanized except for the help!” said one woman, describing how hard she worked, despite having a conveyer belt in the shop). The second part of the project was reading a memoir that connected in some way to an oral history interview. Many students chose NASA figures such as astronauts and “human computers.” Each student then made a poster about the author of their memoir, describing their accomplishments and some of the challenges they overcame. Finally, our young scholars synthesized everything they’ve learned into some sort of creative project, which they presented to their peers. Projects include comic strips, puppet shows, board games, dioramas, drawings, and more! This project had a lot of “moving parts” to manage, and we are so proud of what our students have learned, both about life in the 20th century, and about the kinds of organization and self-discipline required for a long project like this. #seaburymiddleschool #giftedkids #oralhistory #franketobyjones
