🍸 #GinADayMay, Day 12: Experience 🍸 I’ve had some pretty fantastic experiences thanks to gin (scroll back just a little in my feed for Kyoto pictures, for example) but one that sticks in my mind was a visit to the superb @hepple_spirits. It had it all: hilltop martinis on the moors amid the wild and wind blown juniper stands, planting our own juniper bushes, riding in an argocat (terrifying fun), watching wild horses (not pictured sadly) run past just metres away, and learning all about how the delicious gin is made. Experience #GinADayMay My most recent experience was a trip to @cotswoldsdistillery This was a Christmas present as Cotswold Cloudy Gin is one of my favourites. However the very lovely person who booked it didn't realise the tour is mostly based on Whiskey with gin being a bit of a side hustle. Not to worry. I'm rather partial to Cotswold Whiskey. We had a super lovely weekend, we stayed at @feldonvalley which is a short taxi away and had a lovely time. This martini was created in the 90's by Salvatore Calabrese @cocktailmaestro Inspired by his English wife Sue, who insisted one morning he sit down for breakfast and served up toast and marmalade. Taking the jar to work with him, later that day he came up with the Breakfast Martini. 1 spoon orange marmalade 50ml dry gin I've used @whitbygin 15ml @cointreau 15ml lemon juice Stir marmalade with gin in base of shaker, until it dissolves. 🍸 #GinADayMay, Day 10: Bar 🍸 A tale of two bars: one I get to lots and another I think of often. First up: I count myself lucky to live within walking distance of the excellent @funkidory in Peckham. It’s a great neighbourhood cocktail bar, small and welcoming and always with some delicious drinks on offer. I particularly recommend the Oolong Martini and the house Garibaldi (with its dash of absinthe). Naturally they’ll mix up off-menu classics too. Second: #windhorstbar, a bar in Berlin that I wish I could get back to. Again it’s a little neighbourhood place: small without feeling pokey, intimate without feeling cramped. They serve up a great welcome and lovely drinks, just as you’d hope. 🍸 #GinADayMay, Day 9: Glassware 🍸 Presenting my least- and most-used cocktail glasses. The first is a teeny tiny little coupe that holds about 90 ml tops. I have four of these passed down from my grandmother who was, by all accounts, quite the glamorous hostess back in her day. Family lore says these date from the 1930s but to be honest I’m not sure if that’s true. They look a bit more 50s/60s to me. Either way they’re great, but they only come out for very special occasions. The second is an excellent workhorse cocktail glass. It’s a Riedel double rocks glass: great size, great weight, looks good, feels good in the hand and on your lips, and no qualms at all about plonking it in the dishwasher once your night’s over. That’s exactly what you want from an everyday cocktail glass. Would you believe it?? This is my first taste of @hendricksgin Flora Adora Gin! What's worse is I've had this bottle 6+ months and only just sampled it. In my defence, it screamed spring/summer, and if you're in the UK, you know we've been late to that particular party. However, it's DELISH! It focuses heavily on the rose aspects of Hendricks gin and I think I prefer this to their original in all honesty! I'm not one who usually likes flavoured gins but this has all the right hints. Made in Hokkaido by the Asahikawa Distillery, Etsu means jubilation or joy in Japanese. First thing to notice about this gin is the design, which leaves no doubt that this is a product from Japan. The bottle shows a geisha corresponding to a lotus blossom. On her head you can see a shrine which belongs to the locally widespread natural religion of Shinto. Etsu Gin use a secret Asian recipe using several botanicals (berries, peppers, teas and fresh citrus from the Japanese islands) including Yuzu which enriches the gin. Citrus, yuzu and light floral blossom notes hit you on the nose with peppers, green tea, meadow berries, more yuzu and sansho pepper on the palate. The gin is bottled at a healthy 43% ABB using spring water from the Taisetu Mountains. We personally like it with a garnish of grapefruit and a classic tonic. It’s also recommended with a sprig of mint. Lime also works. Final note from us, it’s a gin that transports the mind to the East in just one sip.
