Album Review #1343: A Mortal Binding by @mydyingbride_official Release Date: April 19th, 2024 Country: England 🏴 Genre: Doom Metal, Death-Doom Metal Length: 54:46 Favorite Song: The 2nd of Three Bells Music Rating: 9/10 For Fans Of: Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Anathema Review: If there’s any album that’s absolutely essential for me to review after being gone for like two months, it’s this one. Y’all know My Dying Bride is one of my all time favorite bands, and words really can’t describe how much I love them. A Mortal Binding was one of my most anticipated albums of the year, and as it stands it’s currently my favorite album of the year (There’s still over half a year for that to change, but I doubt it will). This album is incredible, a beautiful continuation of the sound and atmosphere that the band pioneered and has consistently delivered on. Of course Aaron is a masterful vocalist, focusing mainly on cleans throughout this album, but when the growls come out they’re instantly spine-tingling. Andrew and Neil compliment each other nicely on guitar, Lena’s bass is constantly rumbling like an approaching apocalypse, Dan’s drumming is always a welcome addition, and Shaun’s mastery of both keyboard and violin adds so much life to this record. Now let’s take a look at the songs themselves. It starts off with the track Her Dominion, instantly kicking things off with a powerful, doomy riff. One thing that helps it stand out is the lack of clean vocals, and instead Aaron just screams his heart out the whole time. In many ways it feels similar to the band’s origins, but with a lot more experience added on top. You headbang, you jam along, you pause to admire the chugging riffs and bleak atmosphere, and all of this is just the first song. Thornwyck Hymn was the first single, and it’s a great concept of what this album’s all about. It’s very dark and moody, and very much in line with the band’s current, gothic-tinged doom sound. Aaron sounds like he’s about to dissolve into a puddle of tears at any moment, yet every line is spell-binding. (CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS)

I know i had to jump on this quick, missed out on certain presses i needed to act quickly. I picked up two copies the first was 256 x Sea Blue and Mustard Merge and 357 x Sea Blue Cloudy Effect both were @relapserecords exclusives. I didnt know anything about Myrkur until @harma808 posted Mareridt a few years ago and has been a fan ever since. Rangnarok is 9 songs 23 minutes of Bruuns melodic viking metal vocals with hints of folk, doom, and a touch of black metal. My only complaint is that its too short ha! Rotting Christ - Pro Xristoy review on VerdamMnis [FR] Une tendance, assez vite, se dessine : Tolis, en conteur menaçant, s'efface régulièrement (laissant notamment à Andrew Liles et Kim Diaz Holm le soin de poser quelques mots sur The Apostate, Pretty World, Pretty Dies et Ygdrassil) et confie aux guitares et chœurs la responsabilité de mener le voyage, portant des morceaux tous construits comme autant d'hymnes fédérateurs, avec leurs envolées conquérantes et leurs cris de ralliements. Surtout, Rotting Christ semble dans la retenue : eux qui ont, au fil de leurs ères, été bien plus énervés semblent ici apaisés, optant plus pour le rôle du vieux sage, prêtre ou philosophe, que du guerrier. Il y a là de quoi être un peu déçu à la première écoute pour ceux qui espéraient être plongés dans la fureur du combat : Rotting Christ s'élève, prend de la distance et, en nous maintenant dans un mid-tempo hypnotique, donne à son ensemble un côté liturgique qui sert le propos et, sur la durée, fascine.
