Do you think teaching phonics to mastery is boring or unnecessary? ๐นโMastery" means students are not only accurate, but they are also automatic (sound & word level) and fluent (sentence & passage level). ๐นFor example, if your student can read CVC words with 100% accuracy but they stop to sound out half of the words, are they ready to move on to blends? ๐นSometimes we are tempted to move on to a new skill once our kids are accurate. ๐นThat phase when they're accurate but need to develop automaticity can be a bit boring but you're building the foundation for all subsequent skills! ๐นIf we move on before automaticity & fluency develop, students will eventually "hit a wall." ๐นTheir early years may be spent being exposed to various phonics skills but never truly mastering any of them. ๐นPlease, teach to mastery in the early years so students do not have to relearn the foundational skills later on! (I think this goes without saying but of course there are always exceptions, like kids with poor rapid naming skills or processing speed. Does anyone else have to consciously stop themselves from talking too much during end of year testing? It isn't easy to watch your students answer questions wrong that you know they have done correctly in class. No hints allowed! Seriously, it's difficult to see students not do well on formal testing. It's so important to look at where they started at the beginning of year and look for growth in multiple areas, not just base their growth on one end of year test score. This can be discouraging if we let it. What areas have you seen growth in your students this year?
