Closing out the most stressful time of year as a self employed person today. Finished my taxes and sending them off for a final CPA stamp of approval. Got a ton of art sold this last month and my financial goals are all in place. I have a whole new roster of therapy clients ready to tackle their mind, heart and body and a schedule that feels fulfilling and nurturing. I feel invigorated for the first time in so long. If you’re in your 20’s or steadily approaching your mid-30’s my tip for you is this: your 20’s are not for figuring it out. If you happen to figure it out before 30, cool… but don’t hold your breath. Your 30’s you’ll realize what you thought you knew, you had no idea about - and I’m sure the same thing will happen every decade thereafter. My vision for the next phase of life is crystal clear. Pulled away from trying to fit into any boxes. I’ve been done trying to fulfill others expectations of how I should pursue my art, my work and my life for a while but for the first time I feel myself integrating it all. One thing is for sure community here has been such a huge part of my ability to keep showing up in this space. Through the changes in the algorithms to showing up during vulnerable moments so much of my empowerment comes from what you all bring to this space - so thank you. For collecting my work, buying my book, reading my words. All art sales and discounts for the year are done until maybeeeeee holiday season. My new pricing framework is in place for original paintings meaning they are the lowest price they’ll ever go and far lower than they should probably be but for now, I’m just happy seeing this art somewhere other than my own walls and storage room. (CW: domestic violence) 🫀 My father is really good at patching drywall… Since after all, he made regular use of it as a punching bag in our childhood home. You can still feel the patches when you run your hands along the stairwell from our tiny bedrooms to the living room. He always hit things as he was walking away, muttering the worst of explicitives under his breath. Sometimes it would be us or the dog that would get hit, but mostly the drywall The last time I was a target it was a fast pitch raisin box to the eye. I vividly remember spraying Windex into the cut so the swelling wouldn’t go down before my mother got home. She never took his abuse seriously and I needed her to see. I’m not a mother but I’ve been one since the day I was born. Handed the life long task of undoing the mess that had been made by those who came before me. Born of two children playing house outside of two broken homes. My mother’s parents wanted nothing to do with a bastardized child - until they met me. Once they saw that I was indeed a living breathing little thing they decided I’d be worth sticking around… “maybe this is the one we can save? Maybe this is the one who will save us?” I was born a mother AND a pawn. I’ve always been confused by the idea that we are born with original sin. So at a very young I started asking questions about it… It never made any sense to me at all, the idea that a newborn baby could be born inherently flawed - and one could really answer my questions around what this concept truly meant for us as humans. Instead of answering the existential nature of my questions, I was usually met with a retelling of the Genesis story and how Eve talking to the snake and eating the apple was the ultimate fall of the human race and therefore her actions thwarted Adam and she is why we suffer and die. Then I’d have an apple for lunch the next day and have full blown conversations with my dog and cats (they didn’t talk back but I still to this day think someday one of them will) and I’d be even more confused. My mother still talks about the story of Adam and Eve at times, as though it were a true story that we should still abide by. She doesn’t even really believe in religion - she never had us baptized because she thought the idea of original sin didn’t make any sense either. But yet the story of Eve’s “sin” still pervades her reality because of her own mother - even though she IS open to hearing different interpretations of the Genesis story now, which is healing a part of both us (more on that later). So when I would ask about why talking to animals and eating apples were evil, I would usually then hear about the 10 commandments and the Seven Deadly Sins. That Eve’s actions were symbolic of betraying the commandments or commiting one of the deadly sins. Did you know that before the Seven Deadly Sins there were The Eight Thoughts. The Eight Thoughts included the Seven Deadly Sins but also included Sadness. Our ancestors even had to atone for their grief. I’ve always been a “difficult” person. That’s what they say anyway. Some would even say I am impossible. “Just smile” “You can’t take a joke” “You’re SO sensitive” Someone who has a hard time not saying exactly what is on her mind in a given moment. Someone who does not sugar coat my words for the sake of being liked, rather I speak firmly, honestly and intentionally. Someone who asks a lot of questions and doesn’t shy away from difficult topics. I used to resist these parts of myself. Shrink them down so I could be more palatable for people I thought I wanted to like me. Being likeable always seemed like the goal but it always seemed more like a curse when I got to know those people everyone seemed to like. Those super-likeable people always seemed to be putting on a show and it’s become very hard over the years for me to not see right through it. The contrasting image people present versus the true nature and/or condition of their heart. I used to worry I appeared unhinged or insane when I spoke my mind on social media - from years and years of being called the crazy one, the psycho, the drama-seeker. And maybe I do. Maybe you see my posts here and think “Gosh she’s insane” - and for the first time in my life - I am perfectly okay with that warped perception of me. These days I speak my mind with a compassionate confidence that feels unshakeable, with a desire to give voice to emotional experiences/perspectives that feel impossible to articulate for many. I’m not afraid any more of appearing angry or sad. I’m more afraid of spending the rest of my life wishing I had said more, cried more and advocated harder. It’s lonely on the path to self-liberation but it’s the only way I see myself being able to effectively contribute to the larger collective healing - so excuse me while I make this journey more than about the pursuit of joy in the name of ignorance. #jessicayoungart #mentalhealth #healing #journalentry

I was asked in an interview recently about my book what led me to combine the art-making process with healing in my own life. When I first had that pipe dream of an idea “hey, maybe I can pivot from my intellecutal world and become an artist…” I had no idea it would turn into the life I am living today. But at that time the only thing that felt truly healing was creating. I was utilizing art to heal my own emotional struggles by teaching myself to paint and at the same time, I was incorporating more and more art-making with the clients I was working with in therapy. I witnessed art open up deeply traumatized folks, I witnessed it give a language to humans who never had the words to express themselves and I saw myself developing a clearer understanding of how I was showing up in the world as a healer through the art we were making. Art can save lives if we allow it. It saved mine and it saves the lives of the people I work with over and over again. The unfinished sink - still needs: - second layer of grout to deal with the gaps I had to fill in and any sharp edges. - seal the grout to protect from water and staining Things I learned: - glass is extremely therapeutic to break with glass snippers - not all glue is made equal and some of the tiles came unstuck while grouting because I used the wrong type of glue - you end up with lots of teeny tiny glass scratches in your hands and if you’re not careful you will bleed - people are really worried about cleaning grout in a sink but seem to care less about grout on tile floors etc? ***for those wondering, the sink is in our primary bedroom bathroom and it is one of two sinks we have in there. “Goddess” - my largest abstract painting to date. An exploration of the fluidity of femininity; a celebration of strength and grace. A play on our lighter and darker sides and an ode to our inner light that will always transcend the efforts of the darkness. This piece was the first piece that sparked the entire collection. The colors inspired by a napkin (more on that another time). I started painting it in my backyard, right next to my flower garden as the Zinnia and Straw flower were in peek bloom. She didn’t form until much later in the piece but I knew going into it that this piece was a way for me to convey the changing relationship I was having with my own femininity. I have been unpacking the ways society imbues norms and stereotypes on women since college: we should like pink, we shouldn’t like pink, we should reject feminine ideals, we should embrace them - if it’s pink it’s more feminine, if it’s green it’s on army trucks and military toys - the messages are mixed and they’re everywhere. So in an effort to embrace that I’m a woman who loves pink but also rejects feminine ideals - I created “Goddess”. This piece is an ode to embracing whatever you like.
