Managed to get the old man onto his first fallow today. He’s been saying for a while he wants a skin to tan himself. We’ve been out a few times previously either unsuccessfully or I’ve shot the deer. Today I decided I’d leave my gun in the safe and just do my best to find one for him, he missed a deer with a nice coat early on this morning and then near on stood on a tiny calf shortly after, walked a bit further and checked a few spots that I know they usually feed in the mornings, with no luck in those spots we went up out of the clear stuff into the bush and sure enough 100m in there was a mob of about 12 deer all together, he managed to shoot this one which was the closest and safest shot, one perfect shot and she didn’t even take a step. New formula, who dis? Thick Skinned learned how to pickle the skins (yum right?) prior to soaking in tanning solution. The acid solution, of citric acid and salt, sets hair follicles, breaks down proteins and allows the tannins to penetrate further. Then, neutralise in alkaline baking soda solution. Finally, you see me dipping each pelt into chromium sulphate and salt solution for 4-10 days. Variability depends on thickness of skin. Here I have rabbits, possums to a deer pelt.
