DIGABLE PLANETS - BLOWOUT COMB [1994] Blowout Comb is named for the combs used to maintain an Afro hairstyle, and that’s significant in itself. As the group’s Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler explains, "It means the utilization of the natural, a natural style." Like with 1993’s debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), "utilizing the natural" meant creating hip hop that blended jazz with the formidable rap skills of the aforementioned Butterfly, Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, and Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira. Unlike that debut, it meant broadening to include guests such as Gang Starr’s Guru, Jeru the Damaja, and Jazzy Joyce. Following the gold-selling commercial success of their debut, they set out to prove their artistic prowess. This is intelligent, alternative hip hop that sounds like party music. Its lyrics are dense with wit, social commentary, and politics–and its original inner sleeve was modeled on the newspaper of the Black Panther movement. Full of gratitude that I got to curate and write the liners for the “ALFA/YEN Records 1980-1987: Techno Pop and Other Electronic Adventures in Tokyo” compilation releasing April 5th on @sonymusic_otonano and distributed by @lightintheatticrecords . I started working with the SONY team on this project back in 2022 and I would like to thank them for entrusting me with the project and the hard work they did in making this compilation a reality. This compilation features rare and obscure tracks from ALFA Records which was the label that released YMO’s albums, and YEN Records, which was Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi’s label from 1982-1985. There are tracks on the compilation that I’ve been playing for decades now as a DJ as well as early rap from YMO, New Wave from the likes of Jun Togawa, and other gems from more obscure groups in the Techno Pop scene. The liner notes contain information that I gained through my interviews with the YMO members as well as Kunihiko Murai, the founder of Alfa Records, and Shoro Kawazoe, who was a producer at the label. SOLD 2012 LITA pressing of “Dreamin’ Wild” by Donnie and Joe Emerson originally released on Enterprise and Co. in 1979. This is the first reissue of a long, lost gem from Pacific Northwest. Two brothers recorded in their home recording studio. Mix of yacht rock, funk, and pop. They call it “bedroom funk”. “Baby” is a playlist mainstay - resurfaced by Ariel Pink some years ago. My favorite is the funky “Give Me The Chance”. They just made a biopic about them starting Casey Affleck and Zooey Deschanel. Pressed twice by Light In The Attic and still pretty hard to find a copy. She recorded three studio albums between 1963 and 1975 , and two albums are added when her catalog was reissued by Light In The Attic , mostly from previously unreleased songs. Comes with an obi, a double-sided insert that has liner notes in both English and Japanese; and a translucent vellum insert. The first of five albums from Misawa Home's Soundscape series that ran from 1986 to 1990. Long overdue, we have another reissue of an ambient masterpiece from the legendary Hiroshi Yoshimura to add to our collections. If you simply want to close your eyes, reflect, and put your mind at ease, look no further than this album (and the rest of Yoshimura's catalog for that matter). Happy to say this new pressing sounds excellent with little to no noise, which is obviously extremely important for such minimal music. 💡The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes & Backsides (1968-1971) - Lee Hazlewood 🇺🇸 (2012) One could go off the rails trying to explain the odd genius of Lee Hazlewood. A born wanderer, a natural iconoclast, and a man who simply heard music his own way and was somehow able to sail the shark-infested waters of the music business on his own terms by out-sharking the sharks and doing what he pleased, Hazlewood defied easy definitions. He was a fascinating songwriter with a sort of desert Vegas cowboy vision of life, and he was a subtle, brilliant, and innovative producer in the studio, crafting recordings that had enough echo, space, and surprises that Phil Spector viewed him as a mentor. Hazlewood was every bit as eccentric as Spector, too, and at the close of the '60s, he suddenly moved to Stockholm, started his own label, LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries), and turned out a fair amount of extremely interesting material, most of which wasn't even remotely aimed at commercial success. Light in the Attic Records has begun an archival reissue series of some of these rare Hazlewood sides, and this set, which covers 1968 to 1971, is the first of these. With a sparse and yet somehow strangely lush production sound full of reverb and echo, spooky strings, and hushed percussion, Hazlewood sounds here like a resigned and weary ex-patriot cowboy version of Leonard Cohen crossed with Sun Records-era Johnny Cash, all of which would make these recordings simply curios if the songs weren't so good. -AllMusic
