To ensure a safe arrival into Heaven several members of the Arthur family donated money to St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick. We know, for instance, that Thomas Arthur, born in 1378, built at his own expense the eastern front and the window of the choir. Though possessing only a slender income and living in poor and distressed times, Bishop Richard Arthur enriched the cathedral with many precious gifts, some of which still remain as memorials of his generosity and munificence. In 1624, he gave two plated cruets for wine and water, engraved and partly gilt, but unfortunately they cannot now be traced. In 1625 he gave, with the assistance of some friends, a large plate-gilt crucifix, hollow on the inside and intended for a reliquary. This crucifix, which was nicely engraved, stood on a pedestal, or degrees of plate, set with stones, and contained a large piece of the Holy Cross. It was designed to be carried before the bishop on certain ceremonial occasions. It has been handed down as an episcopal heirloom. In 1627 Richard Arthur gave a large plate-gilt chalice and enamelled paten, and a plate pax, nicely enamelled, the enamelled work representing the crucifixion and the soldier piercing Christ's side with a lance. In 1634 he gave a gilt plate remonstrance for the Blessed Sacrament, supported by four pillars and over it a crown. He died, full of years, on the 23rd of May, 1646, and was buried in St. Mary's cathedral. Richard Arthur c. 1560–4 May 1646) was an Irish Roman Catholic prelate who was Bishop of Limerick from 1623 to 1646. Arthur was born into a wealthy merchant family in Cork around 1560. In his youth he went into service of the state in Dublin and later in Cork. He assisted Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork. He left public service after the death of his eldest brother and managed the family business. Hip Hip Hurrah - it’s Saturday! 🙌 . The sun is shining (suspiciously) and I’m only surfacing ☀️ . Was back in the “master suite” last night 🙏🏻 First night in my bed since the 26th Dec and I had the best sleep ever! You know the kind of sleep where you don’t move from one position, dead arm and sheet marks on your face, drooling, waking up with eyes rolling around the ceiling trying to figure out who you are, where you are and how you got here 😂 . Himself was up with the larks - cattle moving and fencing day! I’m Limerick bound to see my girlies!! We were meant to be wining and dining in Adare Manor but sadly they cancelled due to staff shortages 😔💔 so not as to forego the day, we are gonna meet in the city for a nice brunch and catch up instead! . One thing I’m gonna make sure of this year is that I meet up with my friends (one or all) at least once a month! We all live busy lives in our own little ways and can go ages without seeing each other! And while zoom and what’s app are great, nothing beats face to face chats 🥰 .
