On the South Fork of Long Island, the Tree Swallows arrive in April and that is a signal to me that Spring is officially here. I love to watch their acrobatic spins and twists as they chase after insects. Tree Swallows weigh less than one ounce and fly between 40 and 50 miles per hour. They winter along the southern coasts of the US to Central and the northwestern coast of South America as well as the West Indies and then migrate north to breed. Tree Swallows are monogamous and tend to form strong bonds. Breeding starts in early May and can last until late July. The chicks are born blind and helpless. Tree Swallows will line their nests with feathers to help keep the eggs and chicks warm, so that they can grow faster. In order to collect feathers, they have been known to pull feathers from ducks backs. Photographing Tree Swallows is very similar to photographing hummingbirds. Tree Swallows are small and fast and it is critical to adjust your shutter speed. The firsts two images were taken at a shutter speed of f/2000 and even that was a little slow. My ISO was set at 800 and aperture at f/4. Faster shutter speeds will freeze the action or blurring motion. I always sacrifice noise for shutter speed. What’s so special about this picture? Every May, I look forward seeing the “Ruddy Turnstones” pass through Shinnecock Bay on their way to the Arctic tundra to breed. They spend about two to three weeks fattening up and resting and then one day, are gone. Ruddy’s are long distant migrants and travel more than 6500 miles between breeding and non breeding grounds. They are found on both coasts of North America as well as South America, Eurasia, Africa and Australia. Ruddy’s got their name form their ability to flip over stones and other objects to get prey hiding underneath. Their flight speeds average between 27 and 47 miles per hour and they have been known to perform non stop flights of over 4500 miles. I love how on the left side of this image, it seems like a small group of Ruddy’s are talking. Maybe these are the leaders and they are discussing when to leave. I will always wonder on who makes the decision to leave an area and what that decision is based on. I tend to believe it has something to do with the length of the day and the amount of sunlight. Ruddy’s tend to return to Shinnecock from late August to mid September. We have all eaten on the run or while hurrying to go somewhere. This mostly occurs with breakfast. You grab something to eat if you are late for work. This weekend I witnessed a male Osprey eating while on the run. I have taken many pictures of Ospreys and they might be my favorite bird subjects but never flying and eating at the same time. It’s a busy time for Ospreys in the South Fork. The females are nesting and keeping the eggs warm and the males are catching fish and bringing them back to their mates to keep them nourished and healthy. Mother Osprey has an exhausting four months ahead. The eggs will hatch by mid June and the chicks grow fast. Mother will loose almost 60% of her weight taking care of them. Dad will continually bring his chicks and Mom fish and watch over them. I am posting four images of this male Osprey eating while on the run. My shutter speed was 1/1600, aperture at f/4 and ISO 400. I was using my 600 prime cannot decide which one I like best but leaning towards #3. While watching this Great Egret land and use its wings in different motions, I asked myself “How do birds learn how to fly and use their wings?” Young birds leave the nest before they can fly. Birds are not taught to fly, but are expected to figure it out on their own by letting instinct lead the way. Their learning consists of countless falls and failures. I tend to believe that fledglings will watch their parents and learn the basics by copying what they see their parents do. Scientists have developed two hypotheses for the evolution of birds in flight. The arboreal hypothesis states that birds ancestors evolved gliding and flight as they jumped from tree to tree and to the ground. The cursorial hypothesis states that birds ancestors ran and jumped and then evolved flight as a way to enhance and to safely get back to the ground. Neither hypothesis can be proven or disproven with the current evidence available. A bird’s wings act as both wing and propeller and they fly by flapping their wings and steer mainly with their tails. Humans have tried to fly by copying birds. We have tried to fly with artificial wings but cannot create enough lift to overcome the force of gravity. It is not only wings that allow birds to fly, but their light frame and hollow bones make it easier to counteract gravity. I am posting five images taken during the same sequence.
