This fine example of a Burmese dagger (dha-hmyaung) comprises a rosewood scabbard with silver mounts; curved, single-edged steel blade; and an ivory hilt with silver mounts. The hilt represents Bilu, a fierce monster of Burmese folklore with fangs and a protruding tongue. There is another being carved on the interior, you can see his arms and legs, possibly attached to the upside-down face seen midway down the front. Two pairs of inlaid black eyes are visible on the front. Collar is of silver embellished with a band of finely solid silver. The scabbard has three bands of plain solidsilver. The end is covered in silver as is the receiving end of the scabbard. The patina of the ivory hilt suggests an eighteenth century dating. The condition is very good. There are no losses, no chips to the ivory, and no movement of the blade in the hilt. Provenance: English Gentleman retired in Thailand.
