Today kicks off National Safe Boating Week. When you're out on the water, please be alert for manatees and all marine life. Slow down and look around especially in posted manatee zones. Wear polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and spot manatees beneath the surface more easily. Our Manatee Rescue Team often comes to the aid of manatees that are wounded from boat strikes or entangled in fishing line. Help us protect these precious animals. To report a manatee in distress, call 1-888-404-FWCC(3922). Please do not attempt to approach or assist the manatee. Above all, do not get into the water. Manatees are normally very gentle, but they are still wild, powerful animals and can weigh up to a ton! 🌙✨Night rescues? Sometimes...are needed! 🚨✨ To rescue at night is not the best of choices with marine mammals, specially with species that have a great acoustic sense and night vision. This is the case of South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) which behavioral response at night is more active, even fishing in complete darkness of the depth. With this said, to rescue our marine patient "Belly" was an important feat since she was severely injured by metal hooks that ripped her skin as she was also hit in attempt to kill her close to fishing nets. Her condition was worse considering she was also suffering of blindness. She was in need of specialized medical attention, and she specially got it! 💙🦭✨ 🌙✨¿Rescates nocturnos? A veces... ¡son necesarios!🚨✨ Rescatar de noche no es la mejor opción con mamíferos marinos, especialmente con especies que tienen un gran sentido acústico y visión nocturna. It truly takes a village! Did you know that our SSC Marine Mammal Rescue program is just one of a number of organizations that make up the Greater Atlantic Regional Stranding Network? Our network spans from Maine through Virginia and works closely together to get things done. This week was a perfect example of the northern part of our network coming together for one little maternally separated #harborsealpup from northern Maine. Our colleagues at @alliedwhale at the College of the Atlantic (COA) collected the pup from Rockport, ME after monitoring it for several days to give mom a chance to return. The pup spent the night up there to get more stable before its transport south to a rehab facility that could take it in. That's where we come in! Yesterday our team met up with COA in Portsmouth, NH to take the pup for the next leg of the transport. We administered fluids, a glucose supplement, and applied antiseptic to the infected umbilical site, before getting right back on the road. Our team then met colleagues from @whales_org in Waltham, MA, to hand the pup off once more for the final leg of transport. He finally arrived, safe and sound, to our colleagues @nationalmarinelifecenter yesterday afternoon. What a relay team! 🦭 It's times like this that support of the stranding network is so important! We are happy to step in and assist our colleagues whenever we are able. The best way for you to help the seal is to give it space, and quickly report it to make sure professional responders and scientists know about it and can take appropriate action. Be sure to note the location, if other seals are present, and a description of the entanglement when possible. Closely approaching an entangled seal could flush it back into the water and hamper response efforts. Please contact your local stranding network and leave the rescuing to the experts! Dragon is almost ready to return to the wild! She had her release exam yesterday, and if all of her final tests come back healthy then she’ll be back in the ocean soon. Dragon arrived at the Rescue Center in March due to malnutrition, parasites and pneumonia. 11/05/2024 - Marine Mammal Medic Course with @bdmlr_uk !!!!! As a BDMLR medic, I now have the necessary skills, knowledge and techniques to administer basic first aid to stranded or injured marine mammals 🦭, and can even aid in refloating in whale/dolphin/porpoise strandings!!🐋🐬🩺 I am now apart of a huge database of marine mammal medics that can respond to alerts/callouts of distressed, injured or stranded animals. I have wanted to do this course for YEARS so im so so so happy i finally got to do it!!! After completing four fascinating theory modules and then finalising my qualification this weekend with practical workshops, I am now proud to be certified as a Marine Mammal Medic with British Divers Marine Life Rescue! 🐬 The U.K. is a hotspot for marine wildlife with 28 of the globally recognised species of cetaceans having been reported in UK waters. 🦭 We also have resident populations of Common and Grey Seals - of which the UK is home to 40% of the global Grey Seal population! Sometimes marine mammals find themselves in difficult situations and this is where the BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic team step in undertaking call outs to wildlife in need of assistance. I couldn’t be more proud to have completed this course and look forwards to being able to take a hands on approach to marine conservation in the future as a BDMLR volunteer. The Side Eye... Upon being released back into the wild, Rotini goes straight into the ocean, but has a change of heart and quickly comes back onto the beach. She gives everyone a bit of a side eye, as if she can't believe her current situation. *CONTAINS DEAD CETACEAN* Not quite what we had planned for the bank holiday weekend 😢 Saturday we had a call for a live stranded Long-finned Pilot Whale along the coast, spotted by a hill walker, inaccessible from land without a 4 hour walk, so with the help from local boat owners Phil from Loch Ewe and guys from Tanera Mor; Nic, Nicky, Rachel and myself managed to get round to it by sea with @janispatterson & Noel coming over by boat over from Ullapool. Just as we arrived it managed to free itself and began to swim, initially it struggled but soon took off at speed and appeared to be ok, Noel and Janis went back to Ullapool and we went back to Aultbea harbour but soon it appeared all was not well… 30 minutes later it was seen at the mouth of Loch Ewe instead of heading out to deeper sea. Nic, Nicky and I drove up to Cove @rac_project WWII look out base where we watched for a few hours. After losing sight of it in the loch for 40 minutes we decided to go home. Stopping at regular intervals to do a sweep with the binoculars I then spotted it on the shore at Firemore Beach. It was thrashing its tail in the surf but by the time I had parked and got down to the water’s edge it had sadly died. I called Nic & Nicky and with their help managed to secure the whale so it didn’t wash away on the high tide. Sunday morning I returned to keep watch along with my fellow medics Nic, Nicky and @mattofthetrees, speak to the public about the species and the events surrounding this individual’s stranding until @smass.scotland arrived and with the help of Hamish, a local farmer, got it loaded onto SMASS’s trailer to take it away for autopsy, which took place today. Initial findings, although we can never be exactly sure, suggest probable cause for stranding as natural causes related to the injuries from the initial live stranding on the rocks, age, poor body condition and possible infection of the Peritoneum, with tissue samples being sent for testing we should find out more in due course. An update from our SSC Marine Mammal Rescue team, who responded late last week, alongside colleagues from @noaafisheries and Tufts University to a deceased humpback whale reported in Marblehead, MA. At low tide, the team was able to perform and external examination and collect samples to help learn more about this animal. The whale was an adult female humpback whale. Her overall length was 41.7 feet (a full grown humpback can reach lengths up to 60'). Photographs were taken of the underside of her flukes (tail) to send into @coastalstudiesptown, to see if they are able to identify the individual. Our responders work hard to conduct the best possible science during these stranding events. We encourage the public to look to organizations in the marine mammal stranding network regarding updates about this and other whale strandings. WHAT A DAY! The rain could not dampen our spirits yesterday, or those of our runners who came out in droves for our 15th annual Rescue Run which supports our SSC Marine Mammal Rescue program. Over 754 runners and walkers registered to hit the trails of Odiorne Point State Park with us for our #5k, and 134 kids joined us for the #funrun! Following the run 68 individuals joined our partners in conservation, @blueoceansociety, for a #beachcleanup. Add to this the 95 #volunteers who helped get the trails ready and over 70 day-of volunteers who came out to make sure the run was a success. We are so thankful for all of this support which included our presenting sponsors @meredithvillagesavingsbank and event partners @centrus.digital, @promocentric, @nhstateparks, @portsmouthscuba, @dr.spinebydesign and @atlanticgrillnh. Special thanks to @millenniumrunning, our official race timers. As well as the dozens of local businesses that supported our Rescue Run with food and raffle prize donations. Our Rescue Run: Race for Marine Mammals is this Saturday, April 20th, presented by @meredithvillagesavingsbank. We are so excited to have you race, run or walk with us. If you are still interested in joining, please note: REGISTRATION CLOSES TONIGHT at 9pm (Thursday, April 18th). Onsite registration will be available Saturday morning prior to the run from 7:30-8:30am. Planning to attend the Rescue Run, here are a few other things to know: -Skip the lines on Saturday morning! Pick up your race bib Friday, 4/19 from 3-7pm. -The start line is by the playground, and the 5K will begin promptly at 9am. Please be at the start line no later than 8:45am. -The finish line is located on the oceanfront, at the southern corner of the building (a perfect spot to watch). -No dogs. -Please carpool if possible, as parking can be tight and it helps with traffic entering the Park. -There will be a handful of adult and youth t-shirts available for sale on race day; previously purchased t-shirts can not be exchanged. -Kids fun run takes place following the 5K. 500 yard dash at 10:30am. Seal or Pasta? Both. It's the harp seal with the name of the popular pasta, Pappardelle. At his release party, the seal with the cutest name ever, wowed the crowd with his antics. Pappardelle is a male harp seal, approximately one year old. He was found stranded, dehydrated, and malnourished in Massachusetts, and transferred to the Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Clinic. In an overwhelming tournament upset, the harbor seal has beat out eastern box turtle (aka Raspberry) to claim the top spot.
