Exploring Grass Management: A Late Spring Farm Walk with Chris Jones at Woodland Valley Farm Join us on a late spring farm walk with Chris Jones at Woodland Valley Farm and discover the secrets of grass management. Since pioneering the use of herbal leys in 2009, Woodland Valley Farm has amassed invaluable knowledge in this area. We'll explore the benefits and challenges of herbal leys, delve into effective grazing techniques, discuss the concept of mob stocking, rejuvenate elderly herbal leys, and contemplate silvo/wood pasture integration. Since 1960, the family at Woodland Valley has tended to the 170-acre farm. Under Chris Jones' guidance since 1990, the farm has transitioned from conventional to regenerative farming practices. Certified by the Soil Association and founding members of the Pasture-Fed Livestock Association (PFLA), they adhere to organic farming principles and have recently implemented silvo pasture techniques for cattle comfort. With over 26 acres dedicated to wildlife habitats, including streams, ponds, and wetlands, Woodland Valley Farm is a haven for rare bird species such as the Willow Tit, amidst their rapid decline in the UK. This farm walk is an excellent opportunity to learn directly from experienced farmers, gaining insights into nature-friendly farming techniques. It is part of the Pasture and Profit in Protected Landscapes Project, funded via FiPL, promoting farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing and learning. Link in bio for the EventBrite link where you can learn more about the day and book this free farm walk. Really looking forwad to meeting you there @pastureforlife @woodlandvalleyfarm_events @cornwall_national_landscape

Our visit to Farming for Nature Ambassador nominee Evan Delaney, an organic tillage farmer from Fethard, Co. Tipperary. Crops grown are wheat, barley, oats, peas and beans all for animal feed. Oats are also grown on contract for Flahavan's. Some highlights : * Focus on soil health using foliar sprays, seaweed & sugarcane molasses to promote the living soil. * Red clover is grown as a break crop for up to two years acting as a green manure and fixing nitrogen in the soil for subsequent crops. A combination of green crops are used to contribute to fertility and to maintain high levels of organic matter. These green manures are mulched and incorporated into the soil prior to sowing the crop. * 2 metre margins * Yellow hammers have returned to the farm This visit is part of the assessment process for the Farming for Nature Ambassador Awards. Thanks to Farming for Nature Ambassador Pat Mulrooney for the nomination. Thanks to Ailbhe Gerrard for attending on the day. Blue Tits, Dormice, the re-introduction of Pine Martens and nature conflict. This week we met up with a neighbour and fellow bee keeper to discuss how we can collaborate for greater biodiversity and connectivity. This is exciting because we can exchange knowledge as well as extend the area of joined up habitats, increasing their effectiveness. They are Dormouse enthusiasts and have a nice colony of them. They have lots of Dormouse nesting boxes and the necessary licenses to inspect them. We took a peek inside one and found this Blue Tit in occupation. Pine Marten re-introduction is being considered on Dartmoor. @devonwildlifetrust @lovedartmoor @woodlandtrust @dartmoornt are all involved. Our neighbour was concerned about Pine Marten predation on Dormice. This got us thinking about nature conflicts generally. There is a conflict between Willow Tits and Blue Tits who compete for food and territory. Curlew vs Foxes is another example as is Deer vs Trees. Nature conflict is everywhere. Given its prevalence perhaps too little attention is paid towards nature conflict ? #dartmoor #dormouse #pinemarten #wildlife #countrylife #countryliving #nature #bluetit #environment #habitat #biodiversity #woodland #farmingwithnature #naturefriendlyfarming #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture

Today I had the pleasure of welcoming the @bbccountryfile team to @pipersfarm and @redwoodsfm to talk about the importance of small scale, nature friendly farming. It was lovely chatting to @tomheapmedia about the challenges, but also some of the benefits and opportunities for collaborative systems such as ours. Mark showed off his epic chicken system @redwoodsfm and talked about why it works for him teaming up with us, as well as some magic on balanced farming systems. He did me proud! The episode will air in the next couple of weeks. I will keep you all posted! Sorry for the radio silence, folks. We’ve been waiting on a start-up grant to get things growing at scale here, increase our volunteer capacity, offer employment and start our veg boxes off which we were hoping to get a couple of months back. Sadly, after many months of planning and going through the process, we’ve been let down. Although it wasn’t an outright ‘no’, the seasons continue their cycle so we have been doing what we can with the little we have and are still working towards these goals. It’ll just take us longer to achieve, but fingers crossed it comes good. Meanwhile Spence, Becca and the volunteers have done loads of prep work thanks to a grant from @cornwallcommunityfoundation and the VCSE Health Improvement Fund which enabled us to purchase a few things (more news on that later) including tarpaulin for the new beds and lots of seeds which are thriving in the tunnel. Look at all the babies here! We plan to have a variety of lovely tomatoes soon, and some other bits and bobs for sale in local shops, perhaps start a market stall too in the summer… we will have to see what’s possible. If you’d like to get outside, get your hands dirty and get involved with volunteering with us, or join the waiting list for organically-grown veg boxes when they are available, or perhaps you know someone who might, please comment and tag away below. We’d love to meet you. #MarketGarden #CommunityMarketGarden #Camelford #Veggies #CommunitySupportedAgriculture #Cornwall #GrownInCornwall #SustainableFoodCornwall #EatLocal #LocalProduce #RegenerativeAgriculture #ShopLocal #NatureFriendlyFarming #FreshlyPicked #CornwallClimateCare #GrowYourown #Volunteering #VolunteerCornwall #PesticideFree #CareFarm #LearnToGrow #GetInvolved #NourishKernow #CornishProduce #VegBoxes #NatureConnection #SupportLocal #InvestInSkills #CornishEnterprise #HigherCullodenFarm

Market Gardens up and down the UK are springing into life ☀️ - now is the time to support yours! Here are some of the brilliant reasons why - 🌿 Keeping it FRESH: From vibrant veggies to beautiful blooms, market gardens bring us the freshest produce, straight from the earth. 🌱 Supporting Local Communities: These gardens aren't just about growing food; they're about nurturing communities. By buying local, you’re directly supporting the hardworking people who put food on our tables. 📍 P is for Provenance: Market Gardens connect us to our food and those who grow it - there’s no made-up farm names on the packaging (in fact there’s very little packaging at all) 🌻 Biodiversity Boosters: Market gardens aren't just rows of crops; they're havens for biodiversity. They provide habitats for insects, birds, and other wildlife, creating a healthier environment for all. 🥕 Promoting Sustainability: With a focus on organic methods and sustainable practices, market gardens help lead the charge towards a greener, more eco-conscious future. 🍅 Flavour Explosion: Who needs bland supermarket veg when you can have the bursting flavours of locally grown goodness? Market gardens deliver taste sensations like no other. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Connecting Communities: Whether it's a bustling farmers' market, a volunteer harvest or a farm open day, market gardens bring people together, fostering connections and a sense of belonging. 👩‍🌾 Dedication: It takes passion and serious hard graft to grow and nurture plants to feed and sustain us - those blue skies are often grey, rainy and cold too. Huge appreciation to all the market gardens in our membership and beyond. It’s truly been a difficult few months with the UK hungry gap. The wet start to the year has contributed to it being particularly tricky and has served as a reminder of the impact our weather and climate change has on our crops. A little ray of sunshine appeared this week though as @sarahgreensorganics dug up a small sample of new potatoes! 🥔 We always feel that they indicate the start of a steady trickle of seasonal crops which will take us into the months of summer veg abundance. A little more waiting and we’ll be there 💚 #eattheseasonsuk #vegbox #healthyeatinglifestyle #naturefriendlyfarming

Celebrating World Bee Day, this snap taken today on a phacelia plant beside the polytunnel. Bees are some of our most precious pollinators. Responsible for pollinating an estimated 35% of crops worldwide, bees are just as important to humans as they are to the wider ecosystem. It’s hard to imagine a world without bees, but we may have to. 35% of bee species in the UK are currently facing extinction. That’s why, as an organic farm, registered with the Soil Association, we’re working for a nature-friendly farming system. One where bees and other wildlife can thrive without harmful pesticides and other damaging farming methods. #beeday #naturefriendlyfarming #regenerativeagriculture #organicfarming #nopesticides #beefriendly

I've seen lots more beetles around the garden this year. I'm finding them under the tarps (right next to a feast of slugs) and around the roots of clumpy grasses. We're really starting to see the changes that organic methods make to the ecosystem. This is fantastic news as beetles have a lot of benefits: - they eat slugs (and other insects) - they are a food source for animals including amphibians and birds (which also eat slugs) - they are decomposers, breaking down dead plants and turning them into soil - they are one of the major pollinators. Some of my neglectful gardening techniques are also really positive for beetles. Things like areas of long grass, leaving piles of wood around and letting plant matter decay in situ (like all my dead flowers over winter) all help beetles to thrive. I'm also planning to build some beetle banks and dead hedges this year. Lots of centipedes about too. The slug control has arrived. Lets hope the system can balance out a bit now we have some drier weather! #wildlife #naturefriendlyfarming #marketgarden #agroecology #chemicalfree #organic #beetles #predators #ecosystem #holistic #gardening

Happy World Bee Day 🐝. We thought we'd celebrate by sharing a few facts about these incredible creatures buzzing around your garden. Did you know...? 🐝 There are over 250 species of bee in the UK ❄️ Bumblebee queens spend the entire winter hibernating alone 🌷 When a queen first emerges, she feeds on flowers, drinking nectar to gain energy 🏠 Then begins the search for a suitable nest site: holes in the ground, long grass, bird boxes and beneath garden sheds 🌼 Having chosen her nest site, the queen will collect pollen and nectar from flowers, and lay her first brood of eggs 👑 Queens remain inside the nest, laying more eggs for the next batch of workers Share your favourite bee fact in the comments below! 👇

Our team continued our farm visits this week to our Ambassador nominees. Our Network and Outreach Officer Sarah Coonan and our founder Brendan Dunford visited the farm of father and daughter Alan & Alanna Daly from Lough Mask, Co. Mayo. Some highlights: 🌿 Half of their farm is native woodland and hasn’t been touched in 200 years 🌿 A wildlife pond where ducks and herons are regular visitors. 🌿 A bat roost, which is the home of a family of Lesser Horse-Shoe bats. 🌿 As they are converting to organic, their only inputs are lime and potash. 🌿 They are planning to plant up 4 hectares of agroforestry this year. This visit is part of the assessment process for the Farming for Nature Ambassador Awards. Thanks to Derek Mcloughlin, Wild Atlantic Nature LIFE IP was also present for the visit. We have lots of plans for creating biodiversity in the vineyard in the years to come. 🌳 There 8 metre buffer strips every 100 metres which will be planted with mixed native trees and under sewn with pollinator mixes. 🌱 Last Autumn we planted 1.2km of hedging around the parameter of the field. 🐝 Suffolk Wildlife Trust created two ponds in the vineyard field last spring. The clay bank of the pond has provided the perfect habitat for solitary bees which are excellent pollinators and parasitic wasps which predate on small insects such as aphids and fruit flies. Watch this space as we create a wonderful ecosystem in our new vineyard… #suffolk #vineyard #naturefriendlyfarming

What an incredible day we had yesterday meeting all the wonderful families enjoying MACs farm open day. Thanks to my beekeeping-partner-in-crime, Rory for helping to hold the fort. Loads of people had their first up-close experience of honeybees with our enclosed observation hive. Right at the end of the day, we found the queen, and she’s got the native British honeybee characteristic of being black 🐝🖤. Fave questions from the tiddlers: “what colour is bee poo?” Answer: yellow, orange, rust. And “how big is a queen bee’s bum?” Answer: At least twice the size of all the other bees’ bums. #beekeeping @themacsfarm #summer #summervibes #insects #familytime #bees #blackqueen #education #naturefriendlyfarming #nature #naturelovers

I have a lovely bit of news to share with you all that has been keeping me a little busier behind the scenes… I am so excited and feel very honoured to tell you all that I have recently joined @devonwildlifetrust as a Trustee. Today was the first board meeting/strategy day and to say I’m absolutely buzzing about the future of DWT is an understatement. The executive team and the other trustees are not only completely inspiring but so full of passion, hopefulness and the necessary skills to deliver ambitious goals that benefit us all. I’m really excited to be invited into the room to help advocate for farmers, to ensure that more widely nature is not separated from farming and encourage all stakeholders countywide to see the vast benefits of nature friendly farming. I’m so excited to be on this journey, learning more about the complex projects @devonwildlifetrust are delivering and supporting them in achieving their goals. I can tell you all first hand that you couldn’t ask for a better bunch of people to be tackling some of these huge challenges - what a privilege to be able to support and share this critical work. If you are as obsessed as I am with nature and are not yet a member of @devonwildlifetrust it’s super simple to join the gang and support the organisation, it takes about 2 minutes and could be the good thing you do for the day. #nature #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #sustainability #farming #britishfarming #naturefriendlyfarming

High on the downs, a wonderful tour of Sarah and Angus Sladen’s farm above Ecchinswell on a glorious Friday this week. Stone curlews, gray partridge, endless butterflies and skylarks, the whole thing was like a Housman poem. They are part of the Nature Friendly Farming Network doing all they can for biodiversity and farming in harmony with the landscape. It’s got to be the right approach and all strength to their arm I say. I will do what I can to steer the government in their direction. #hampshire #farming #naturefriendlyfarming @nffnuk #environment #wildlife

The Herdwicks were in this field for lambing but Somerset took them out a couple of weeks ago so the Bluebells would flower. They are in the field by the house now so we are entertained by their lambs playing at the gate. . . . #bluebellsinopenfields #stayonafarm #treshnishfarm #treshnishandhaunncottages #scottishagritourism #gorural #spring #farmingwithnature #naturefriendlyfarming #herdwicksheep #islandholidays #mullholidaycottages #findyourinnerhebrides

Exploring the Pasture and Profit project at @treveddoe_regen with farmer and Pasture and Profit Mentor @ben_thomas7_ was a rewarding experience. Ben shared insights into his innovative farming methods, focusing on very low input systems and 100% pasture-fed native breed cattle. His dedication to creating an 'easy' system at Treveddoe was evident as he discussed his approach to rotational grazing, bale grazing, and the use of technology like Pasture Map and KiwiTech's electric fencing. Ben's discussion on his farming journey, conservation grazing, and the benefits of FiPL funding shed light on the possibilities for sustainable agriculture within @cornwall_national_landscape It was inspiring to hear how he manages his herd of Belted Galloways and North Devon Cattle while balancing his role as a farmer for Natural England. The farm walk provided a fantastic opportunity for networking and community building. With engaging discussions and valuable questions from the group, the event was both informative and collaborative. From learning about Ben's cattle management practices to understanding the impact of seasonal flow on meat sales, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the intersection of farming, conservation, and sustainability. Overall, the day was a testament to the power of farmer-led initiatives like Pasture and Profit, fostering knowledge exchange and innovation within our farming community. Stay tuned for more insightful events and opportunities to learn from local experts like Ben Thomas. There are many more farmer-led events in the near future, so be sure to check the links in our bio for updated walks and follow us for regular updates. There are still mentee spaces available on the Pasture and Profit project— for more information, message us here or visit the Pasture for Life website via the link in our bio. @pastureforlife
