Let’s talk balayage. Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of stylists mention balayage without actually doing balayage. That then leads to clients asking for “balayage” but not really understanding what it is exactly. The picture above is traditional balayage. What do I mean by that? That means I took a clay lightener, a chip brush and painted on the hair in big sections and wrapped it up in saran wrap got 3-4 levels of lift to achieve these glowy pops of color that replicates what it would be like to be kissed by the sun during the summer time. What I’ve noticed is that when clients come in asking for “balayage” they just mean lived in color. There are other ways that you can get a lived in color. Balayage is definitely one of them however you can achieve a lived in look with foils as well. Which is what I’m noticing a lot of people wanting when they say the word “balayage”. When having your consultation with your stylist make sure to have pictures. Point out what you like and don’t like. Also the last thing to keep in mind is if your starting base is dark unless you want to stay on the warmer side a traditional balayage would not be for you. Lightening out dark color requires an open mind and realistic expectations. Sometimes before reaching that perfect blonde, you may need to rock some warm or caramel tones .Thankfully my girls been trusting the process and just embracing whatever each session brings in our blonde journey ! I believe this is our 3rd time lightening from essentially black hair (darkest brown) and I feel it has had the most impact. We have come a long way 👏 My girl USED to periodically give me a little project when she decided to do a lightening session on herself at home . Thankfully she’s been committed to maintiencing it properly and getting it in a healthier state. The original thought was that doing an all over bleach would be less maitience with her gray but she still had a lot of her natural dark hair mixed in except for in the hairline . Because of this it actually created a much harsher grow out against her natural . Also there was a lot of inconsistency from how the lightener was applied . Sometimes fully correcting takes more then one sitting when there’s variables involved such as health of hair , desired results, and price . Which were all factors in this scenario. Let’s talk about hair health, expectations and being open to suggestions. This was a clients first time in my chair but I had known her for years and always to be a natural level 3/4 (dark hair) . She had been going somewhere else and had her blonde moment just because “why not, I wanted to try something new ?”. —Completely logical and relatable. To me , seeing the condition it just was time to take a break for the health and love of the hair . Also in knowing what it had looked like previously I feel like it was over-blonded and not working with her. We added some dimension back in and now we are going to give it regular trims and time to rest, as it really was to a point where it won’t grow past a certain point. She really had given me complete reign to do my job, was completely open to my suggestion and ended up loving it and saying “wow , I don’t think I’ll ever go that blonde again”. No wrong was really done in trying something new or by other stylist it just was my perspective with fresh eyes and other variables. Getting to the point I’m trying to make is I want to give my clients what they want but I have learned over the years that’s not always enough in the long run .
