Countless Americans know someone who passed away in battle. Sons, daughters, husbands, mothers, siblings, cousins, friends, we have all been impacted. On this Memorial Day, and everyday, we honor and mourn those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. It is because of their sacrifices that we are able to live the lives we do and benefit from the Freedoms we have. Originally known as Decoration Day, the first national observance of Memorial Day was May 30th, 1868 after a proclamation issued by Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, John A. Logan, to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War. The unofficial origins of the holiday started a little earlier in 1866 at the local level and is widely attributed to Mary Ann Williams, from Georgia, who wrote a letter to local newspapers requesting one day be set aside to decorate soldiers’ graves. This holiday quickly spread across the South and eventually to the north, largely with the proclamation issued by Commander in Chief John A. Logan. There remain other stories of cities having commemorated a similar holiday prior to this time, however, not at the same level of organization and not beyond the local level. In 1962, President JFK signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the full week as Police Week. Starting in 1982, a Memorial Service began with 120 people coming together to commemorate those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Since then, this event has grown with up to 40,000 people attending the vigil which takes place in our Nation’s Capital. What started me as a collector was living with beautiful things. My father was a collector, too," relates Whitney Warren, whose patrician features have aged with the same even patina as the treasures in his home on San Francisco's Telegraph Hill. The house is practically a historic landmark of interior design, built by the renowned architect Gardner Dailey decorated originally by Billy Baldwin and subsequently refurbished by his San Francisco counterpart, noted designer Anthony Hail. A director of the San Francisco Opera and of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco,the collector speaks first of his vocation. "I'm an agriculturalist,' he says proudly, "and we're very popular these days.' Part of his time is spent on his ranch near Wheatland, California, where he grows peaches, pears, almonds ,and lots of walnuts.' But collecting is his passion Mr. Warren acquired the four mir- rored panels in the hall, formerly doors in a palace in Genoa, at auction in New York. "They once belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Guest, who had used them as a screen. I made up my mind, I wanted them after learning they had also belonged to Stanford White, the great architect for whom my father worked in his first job. That made it doubly interesting for me. The panels were brought to California and ftted exactly. Whitney Warren, Sr., who died in 1943, was architect for Grand Central Station and for the reconstruction (1928) of the University of Louvain, in Belgium, destroyed during World War I. He also designed the John Paul Jones crypt at the United States Naval Academy, the bronze gates in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in New York, and the Belmont and Ritz-Carlton hotels. The heritage of good taste he bequeathed to his son is immediately evident in the entrance hall, where the mirrored panels reflect potted trees, and an eighteenth-century Venetian chandelier hangs in the alcove formed by the balcony. On May 13, 1864, in the middle of the Civil War, William Henry Christman became the first veteran to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. After the Battle of the Wilderness, fought in early May 1864, resulted in the deaths of over 29,000 people, Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs directed staff to identify a suitable site for a large national military cemetery. For several reasons, including being on elevated ground and not prone to flooding and because it was land owned by Robert E. Lee’s family, the current site was selected. At the time, the Lee family owned a small amount of back taxes on the property which was used as a reason to confiscate the property. Interestingly, the family ended up suing the U.S. Government for ownership of the property ten years later and, while they were successful, they sold it back to the Government, at which point the land became a U.S. Military Reservation. Today the cemetery is home to approximately 400,000 Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, including 396 Medal of Honor recipients, two U.S. Presidents (Taft and Kennedy), five five-star generals including Admirals Leahy and Halsey and Generals Marshall, Arnold, and Bradley, and General Pershing (though Pershing was a General prior to the adoption of the five-star rank). One of, if not the most famous burial sites at Arlington National Cemetery, however, remains the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
