I saw this special camel on our first day in the desert and fell in love. Not sure why, but it was an automatic connection. He became my travel partner for the duration of my time trekking the desert. And pretty much the entire time I was with him, I couldn’t help but wonder about the treatment of these majestic creatures. From my perspective, there was no way they were being treated correctly, as they are being ridden in the blazing heat for hours on end and general conditions out in the wasteland is subpar. For me, I’m all about forming emotional connections with animals of all kinds. They should be wild and free! But that is just my one dimensional view. If you ask the locals, camels are an integral part of their livelihood. They are life. Without healthy camels, there isn’t the ability to move around, make money, eat food or survive another year. Camels, the environment, and the humans that inhabit one of the most inhabitable places on earth have learned to work together to co-exists and keep their long-standing legacy going. Enough to bring me all the way out to their wild world to learn from them. I had many conversations with locals about their relationship with camels. From Morocco to Egypt, this topic kept coming up. One night in Egypt I stayed up for hours taking about it, in fact! The cultural reliance on these creatures is unique to say the least and imperative—so different views and perspectives need to be heard. I’m continuing to learn how to listen and ask more questions—understand and empathize with different vantage points other than my own. And ultimately think a bit differently about how the world works. It’s not so simple and the more corners of the planet that I explore, the more I realize that. I can certainly say this trip was a big push to do more of the above. And the learning journey only continues from here …

Camy Camel There are 8.7 animal species on the world. Well, I can reassure you, I don’t want to felt all of them. Some animals are still on my list… felting goals for 2022. The one-humped or Arabian camel or dromedary is an animal I‘ve already seen in the desert many times. It‘s one of the regions in the world I‘m amazed by. How can animals and humans survive in these extreme climatic conditions? Camels are well adapted for survival in the desert. Their adaptations include: • large, flat feet - to spread their weight on the sand • thick fur on the top of the body for shade, and thin fur elsewhere to allow easy heat loss • the ability to go for a long time without water • the ability to tolerate body temperatures up to 42°C • slit-like nostrils and two rows of eyelashes - to help keep out sand [source: www.bbc.co.uk] Camy Camel is a seamlessly wetfelted fingerpuppet that can also stand alone. He’s 11cm high and weighs 10g. I made it from coarse brown wool that was very uncooperative and really hard to felt. It was leftover and the only brownish camel colour I had in my stash. Camy Camel is lucky to stretch his legs on sand I collected in the Sahara desert. Dreaming of more holidays to come.
