In our garden today the Daylilies are starting to produce buds. In a few days to come they’ll all be blooming. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers” is right on point here in our garden. Daylilies are amazingly low-maintenance perennials. They’re virtually disease-free, pest-free, and drought-resistant. They also are not picky about soil quality. Plus, the flower has a long bloom period. Daylilies are also edible and have a long history in the kitchen. All parts of the Daylily are edible. The tender foliage can be eaten as a spring green. The buds and flowers can be eaten raw or in soups. The swollen portions of the root can be boiled and eaten. Yesterday was a beautiful planting day for me! The garden contractor where I used to work for as a student (started there when I was 16 and worked there for 7 years during my holidays) asked me to modify some of his borders. His front garden is full of nice plant collections of clients, friends and family whom wanted to get rid of them (🤨). Of course, a lot of plants had to stay so it made the design process a bit more difficult. I did not make a plan beforehand. I chose plants just randomly at @kwekerijdehessenhof and I ‘designed’ on site, not behind a desk. It’s the first time I’ve done this and it felt a bit strange. When I make a plant list and a planting plan, I can imagine how it’s gonna look but to be honest, now I really don’t know. And of course this is perfectly fine! It’s cool to explore different ways of designing :) It will be some kind of mixed planting collection garden, with plants that the garden contractor doesn’t know yet. Hopefully he likes it and uses plants in his client’s gardens. In the video you can see the editing phase, before putting out plants. I love the purple midrib of the Taunton Deane perennial kale, it goes to beautifully with purple flowers so I’m going to plant it with chives, phacelia and sweet rocket. What’s blooming in your garden today? Here in our garden, almost all the perennials that we have are now flourishing and producing buds. One of them is this Marguerite Daisy with lots of new buds. Marguerite Daisy with scientific name Argyranthmum Frutescens, also known as Paris Daisy is a perennial plant which we planted last year that survived the winter because this plant is tolerant of low temperatures, although it cannot survive freezing. Thankful that we don’t experience snow here in the Bay Area. It requires a lot of sunlight and very well drained soil. The plant can die if overwhelmed with water. Forbidden Fruit is a nice mid sized hosta with good coloring and corrugation. It is in a very shaded area under a lot of big leaf maples so I would guess it only get an hour or two at most of sun. It has been slow to put on size so I think I’ve only taken one chunk off of it in five years. That one gets about four hours of sun and I think is growing a bit better. Acetosella Rosea (famiglia: Oxalidaceae) L’Oxalis acetosella è una pianta erbacea, perenne, sempreverde. Le foglie col tempo piovoso si contraggono piegandosi verso il basso, assumendo l'aspetto di un piccolo ombrello. I petali e le foglie si chiudono nelle ore notturne. I fiori sono bianco-perla con venature di color malva-lilla ed una macchia basale gialla. La varietà Rosea ha fiori rosa con venature porpora. In Italia è diffusa allo stato naturale nei boschi, su terreni acidi ricchi di humus, su ceppaie marcescenti e su pendii esposti a nord, delle regioni settentrionali e centrali, dalla pianura alla montagna, nel meridione nelle zone montane (assente invece nelle zone litoranee e nelle isole). È una pianta molto sensibile alla luce, infatti durante le ore più calde sia i fiori che le foglie tendono a richiudersi. Il nome del genere “Oxalis” deriva dal greco “oxys” (acuto o pungente) per il sapore acido della pianta e da “hals” (sale) per l’elevata quantità di acido ossalico. Il nome comune della pianta “acetosella” deriva dal sapore acidulo, ma anche aspro, delle foglie usate anticamente come condimento per le insalate e che ricorda appunto l’aceto. I droghieri preparavano un prodotto detto “sale di acetosa”, estratto dalla pianta, che si usava per togliere le macchie di ruggine e di inchiostro dai tessuti e serviva pure a pulire il cuoio. •Delphinium/stračonôžka/stračka• krásna sýto modrá až atramentová vysoká trvalka, po odkvete a následnom reze remontuje, takže nám v záhone zakvitá opakovane. Samozrejme tých farieb je na výber omnoho viac - ružové, biele, fialkové. Vyšľachtené boli rôzne kultivary. Vyskúšala som ich vysadiť naozaj mnoho, no všetky sa v záhone stratili aj po opakovaných pokusoch. A tak som sa rozhodla vypestovať ich zo semienka. Rastlinky sa krásne ujali a záhon zdobia už tretiu sezónu. How many varieties of Penstemons can you name? If you stopped at 5, you’re way ahead of me. There are actually at least 1000 species of this wonderful perennial. And you know what else? It’s a native American genus. You can find them in dwarf sizes to tall shrubs. I plant the kind that fit well into a xeric garden. The photos here show a shrubby Penstemon (Penstemon fruticosus) and Red Rocks Penstemon that were in a previous garden of mine. Penstemon flowers are funnel, bell or tube-shaped. Many start flowering in midsummer and, long after other plants are worn out and shriveled up, will still bring color to your garden until the first frosts. Penstemons are very drought tolerant perennials that are easy to grow in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil. And unlike me, they’re rarely bothered by insects or diseases. I found these facts about penstemon pollinators on the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) website: The most frequent insect visitors to penstemon flowers are honey bees, bumble bees, and native bees. The red-flowered, tubular penstemons are difficult for most insects to enter, so they are favored by hummingbirds. So if you wanted to provide one of the best pollen sources in your garden, consider planting penstemons. Find out which ones are best for your planting and hardiness zone, though. Blue flax, also known as Linum perenne or perennial flax, is a flowering plant native to Europe but widely used elsewhere for its attractive blue flowers and its versatility in landscaping. Here are some key points about blue flax: • Grows to a height of around 12-24 inches (30-60 cm). Its flowers are sky blue in color, occasionally with a hint of lavender, and have five petals. • Relatively easy to grow and tolerant of a variety of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil. Typically blooms from late spring to early summer, producing lots of delicate blue flowers.
