My sister Savannah is a true animal lover. She loves her goats so much and takes care of them so well. They adore her and come running the second they see her walking through the barnyard. They think she’s the queen of treats. In one of these photos you can see her billy goat trying to grab the last ritz cracker out of her hand. He’s my least favorite but she loves him. He was her very first goat purchase in 2023 and since then she’s grown her herd into about 7 total. And don’t think she’s stopping there! This girl has new baby chicks, kittens and ducks in the backyard. (She bought the ducks their own pool) and is already planning other future pet purchases. I love her! When I was a kid, my grandma bought me my first goat🐐 I was maybe 6 or 7? Anyways, for the next few years that my grandmother was alive, she raised countless goats, created her own 4-H club and taught my sisters and I everything she could about caring for these animals. We went on to own horses, donkeys, and who knows how many goats. I know that my love for these animals is because of my grandparents efforts. 🇬🇧 Built a new hay feeder for the boys. They have a large one inside their house but as the weather warms up, they prefer to eat their hay outside. I'm by no means a skilled carpenter, but it works well and the design is very simple. It took me an afternoon to build. Hay feeders cost about €500 in the shop, so building our own saves a lot of money! The red Swedish flour paint that our volunteers made and applied on the gates is also holding up really well. After making a few batches, we've found a what seems to be a good recipe. This also saves a lot of money as outdoor wood paint costs a fortune here, but the ingredients for this nice natural paint are all very cheap. 📷🐐⛰️ Some more shots from our recent expedition with our goats on the GR22 Historic Villages trail. One thing we learnt on this trip is the vital importance of being strict with one's goats regarding camp etiquette. If you don't let them know what's expected of them, they will not hesitate to stick their heads in backpacks to steal food, pee and poo on your tarps and clothes and barge into your tent, knocking everything over and generally subjecting everything to a destructive level of curiosity. Our smartest goat, Melaço, very quickly learnt that he could steal ziplock bags full of granola and spin them round and round in his mouth until they broke, then eat the contents! We tried to be very consistent with the squirt bottle and a 'no' command, teaching them to ignore the backpacks and gear. This works really well and they quickly got the idea. One thing that might help, which we will try next time, is giving the goats their own 'camp' by setting up a tarp for them, even if it's not raining, and encouraging them to hang out over there instead of by our tent and gear. I think if we gave them their own clearly defined area, they would soon get the idea. We love them and their company but it's hard to cook and do camp chores with six overly friendly goats sticking their noses into everything! The other mistake we made was not bringing their rain coats. We don't usually put coats on them at home, as if they get wet they can go into their shelter and dry off, but out on the trail they don't always have that luxury. Although the weather was great for most of our walk, it did start to rain quite hard at the end (part of the reason we decided to head home) and, never knowing what lay ahead, it was tricky to find consistent shelter for the goats so they could dry off. I think someone disassembled Mary Jane's skeleton as a prank 😛. She looks like a goat part pile between her mom and Louisa. Momma Tenny and her babies are doing well. Once we complete a couple more projects, they'll be ready for a pretty little outdoor space of their own until the babies are big enough to play with the whole herd. Bonus pics are huge mushrooms I found in the compost pile and a nice stack of hefty cage panels Alex got for a great price. I'm tempted to build a walk-in chinchilla pen with them. Dam-raised kids know they are prey animals, so are wary of unfamiliar people and animals. They depend on dams and the herd for safety. When separated from the herd, they are fearful and seek security. Unlike a bottle baby that sees itself as a person, and sees people as the herd, a dam-raised kid recognizes no people as its herd until it forms an attachment. 🇺🇸🐐 After a long and nervous wait, our American pack goat saddles have arrived!! We ordered these from @pack.goats a while back, but the journey from Idaho to Eirô was a long one, fraught with perils. They ended up getting rejected by US customs on the way out of the country, returned to Idaho, sent again, stuck in customs in Lisbon for three weeks and then getting delivered to the wrong address. But they got here in the end! Ulisses is modelling the wooden saddle - it's a little bit too big for our goats right now, but we hope they will grow into it as they still have at least another two years of growing to do. Melaço is wearing the soft-sided saddle with detachable panniers, designed for training kids. This fits him really well and we're going to start using it on our walks. The wooden saddle has some absolutely ginormous heavy duty expedition panniers that go with it (not pictured). We're just delighted with the quality of these very well made and well designed items and so excited to start using them. There is an excerpt below and the full article is linked in our bio Meningeal worms — scientifically called Parelaphostrongylus tenuis and more commonly known as the "deer worm" or "brain worm" — are a parasite that primarily lives in the digestive systems of white-tailed deer. A type of roundworm, these parasites are usually harmless in their natural host, living out their natural lifespans without harming the deer. White-tailed deer have a high tolerance for infestations, and the meningeal worm can often live for several years in the deer without causing harm. However, in recent decades, the white-tailed deer's territory has begun to overlap more with that of moose, caribou, and domestic livestock. This has caused brain worms to transmit to other, less-resistant hosts, often resulting in behavioral changes, weakness, and death in infected animals. Meningeal worms begin their life cycle in the body of an inconsequential-looking slug — or, more commonly, a snail. These hosts and the meningeal worms all prefer wet conditions and do not enjoy the heat, so infestations can be found primarily in the eastern United States and are least common in the dry Southwest. White-tailed deer ingest brain worms by accidentally swallowing infected snails hiding in the vegetation. The parasite finds its way to the lungs, where it cycles through the next phase of its life cycle. Eventually, the deer coughs up and re-ingests it into their stomachs, where it travels through the entire digestive system, finally defecated out onto the ground. Uninfected snails eat the mucus off the outside of the deer's feces, infecting themselves with the brain worm, and the cycle begins anew. This is Daisy Goat. We took her in with her sister Rosie Goat as a favour to a friend who was moving house. Daisy Goat has a cleft palate and wasn't expected to survive past a few weeks old as usually this means they can't eat properly. But, nope, she has no issues eating, and is very healthy and happy!
