As spring turns to summer, we are enjoying the signs of new life everywhere at Philmont. Alison Hughes, artist and wife of Lee Hughes, Conservation Director, has been documenting a family of foxes in Base Camp near the Administration office: "As an artist, I have explored many different mediums with my craft, including photography. After purchasing camera equipment that would allow me to photograph birds from a distance, I realized that living on Philmont would allow opportunities to photograph a wide range of animals. We are lucky enough to be in close proximity to a fox den, where I have been able to capture delightful images of these wonderful creatures. Having the long lens allows me to take photos without disturbing the foxes, which is of utmost import for wildlife photographers. One of my favorite and inspirational photographers was Ansel Adams. Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve probably seen his black-and-white photos from the American West, specifically Yosemite. This peak is known as “The Tooth of Time.” It is currently located on the Philmont Scout Ranch and was a landmark for travelers along the Santa Fe Trail. Formed during the Cenozoic Era, some 22-40 million years ago, it represented the beginning of the last seven days on the trail to Santa Fe, NM. We had a great class with BSA Troop 8 this past weekend. They are preparing for their trip out west to Philmont this summer and spent some time learning how to deal with emergencies in the backcountry. At the end of the class we had a mock scenario set up to test the scouts on their new skills. They had to stop severe bleeding, perform CPR, and even carried patients from a cave on a makeshift litter. Backcountry Spotlight - French Henry - Discover the riches of Philmont's gold mining past: Gold is still found in the streams on Philmont, which was once the scene of lucrative gold-mining operations. Explore the historic mine shafts, sluice boxes, and placer mines that dot the mountainsides and valleys. ⛏ If your Philmont adventure takes you to French Henry, you'll have the chance to tour a real gold mine. Though no longer in operation, these mines have been carefully shored so you can venture inside the tunnels - it's an immersive experience that will transport you back to the days when determined miners sought their fortunes in these historic mountains. ⚒🌄 When you find some "color" (flecks of gold) in the streams, you can take your discovery home and show off your success. Gold pans are available at both Cyphers Mine and French Henry, so you can try your hand at panning for gold. Through various initiatives, we're dedicated to preserving the natural resources and ecosystems that make our ranch so special. From habitat restoration and wildlife management to sustainable land use practices, our team works tirelessly to preserve the natural beauty of our landscapes for generations to come. In partnership with Trex Decking, the Philmont Commissary Operation collects and recycles the trail meal bags used by our campers. This summer, we anticipate collecting over 200,000 of these bags, which would otherwise end up in landfills for the next 20-1,000 years, slowly breaking down into harmful microplastics. By recycling these bags, we're able to transform them into over 88 16-foot Trex boards. This not only prevents waste, but also reduces the environmental impact of producing new materials. It's a win-win for our planet, our participants and Philmont. Philmont GAP Teams... The BMW GAP Team Matches are a prestigious annual golf competition held by the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) since 1897. It's one of the oldest and most revered team competitions in the United States, showcasing the best amateur golfers in the Philadelphia area. In 2023, we quietly made a resurgence on the GAP scene, with a winning record for 3 out of 4 teams and a well-earned promotion for Team 2.
