What an amazing way to kick off Week 3 of our amazing dialogue! After getting our daily coffee from Pret, we headed over to campus to continue learning about the various healthcare systems. Today we wrapped up one of our projects, discussing some difficult subjects in healthcare, such as the debate of individual medical freedom vs public health. After this, we had a tour of The Old Operating Theatre Museum. Here, we got to learn the complex history of surgery, before anesthetics and antiseptics were invented (do you think you would be willing to have surgery in this time period?) Anuragh even had the opportunity to get his leg amputated and experience what it would have been like to receive a common surgery back then! Also, can you spot the difference between the last two pictures? Fun fact: Because of the immense risk of infection, surgeons had to work as fast as possible (for an amputation to be successful, it had to be done in two to three minutes!) Grateful. · Since the pandemic started crawling through the world there has been a lot of uncertainty, wrenches thrown in plans, and wondering what’s going to happen next. In light of these times, I’ve tried to shift my focus to what I’m grateful for. · I’m grateful that my family and loved ones are in good health. · I’m grateful that I get to spend time pursuing my other interests. · I’m grateful to have adequate shelter, food, and environment to weather the storm. · Lastly, I am most grateful for the brave healthcare providers who are on the frontline fighting this virus oftentimes risking their own health to do so (due to the egregious lack of PPE being provided at some hospitals). · Because of them, we GET TO stay at home. [ Graduation! ] Last Friday, my classmates and I finished our last week of “clinics” aka Zoom University. We celebrated (over Zoom) and it was still an exciting day, but it wasn’t the same. And neither will our graduation from dental school. · Although graduating undergrad was special, this graduation meant a whole lot more to me. At first, I was pretty bummed. I wouldn’t get to cheer my classmates and friends on as they walk across the stage. I wouldn’t get to hug my favorite professors and tell them how much they’ve impacted me personally. · But I realized that none of that matters in the long run. My parents will still be just as proud of me for becoming the first healthcare professional in the family🥼. My friends and I will still celebrate (eventually 🥳). We have much to be proud of! “Hold the vision, trust the process.” · “My DAT/GPA is ____...is that good enough to apply?” seems to be a big question when applying to programs. Now that interview season is in full swing, this question seems to be going around more and more. 🤔 · These are just one way of evaluating applicants. GPA helps paint a general picture of how you might perform in dental school. Standardized test score help put applicants on a more even playing field. However, it does not and should not define the individual. 🙅🏻📝 · Life happens. Everyone has a different situation. One may have had to go through tough times in their personal, family, or financial life while in school. All of these things can affect your performance. 👨👩👧👧👨👨👦👦 · One question I think needs to be asked more when starting a program (grad school, residency, etc.) is “Are there any factors in your personal or family life that may affect your performance and what can we do to help?”. 🤲🏼 · This was the first question our instructors at Officer Training School asked.
