We continue Preservation Month's 2024 theme, People Saving Places, and now visit the Randolph Neighborhood Association! Thank you to their president, LaTasha Wyche, for answering our questions! Today, Part II: Q. What were some of the first things you learned about community organization? A. What I have learned about community organization is to find the people with the ability to turn heart into action. Everybody expects someone else to do it…but you must find the people who will do it because their hearts are invested in it. These are the people who show up to every RNA meeting, event, and community clean-up. They are invested in the community and do the work to show they have heart. Q. Tell us about others who are with you in RNA revitalization. A. I also learned that instead of getting angry and blaming the people who are not acting in the best interest of your community, to engage with them and find ways to partner with them. We now have a better relationship with VCU that has enabled us to address some ongoing issues we were having with VCU students living in our neighborhood. We also have open dialogue with some of the investment property owners in the neighborhood. They have supported out efforts to improve the look and feel of the neighborhood. And of course, 5th District Councilperson Stephanie Lynch. She understands the challenges we have had (and still have) in the neighborhood and is always an advocate for those of us who have lived here for a long time. RNA’s Vice President David Wright loves the area and has lived in the neighborhood for a while, so does the rest of RNA’s board to include Tomeka Mitchell, RNA Secretary, and Yvonne Singleton. Yvonne has been with RNA for the long run, she’s seen many organizational changes and brings a lot of historical knowledge to the events we do to promote togetherness in the neighborhood. The tradition of the Alliance for Historic Wyoming celebrating Historic Preservation Month began in 2019 with our first campaign, the theme of which was “Giving Buildings a Job." It highlighted Wyoming businesses which operated out of historic buildings. A calendar of events was released with historic preservation events across the Cowboy State, including special discounts for Historic Preservation Month at many businesses. Thus began the Alliance’s efforts to coordinate the month-long celebration across Wyoming which continues to this day and will stretch into the future. Don’t forget to check out our calendar and other festivities on our website, link in bio! . . #historicplaces #preservation #historylovers #ThatsWY #explorewyoming #historyfacts #wyoming #history #historicpreservationmonth #preservationmatters #WyomingHistory #historicwyoming #historicpreservation #historicbuildings #HistoricPlaces #wyomingbusinesses #nonprofit #throwback #tbt #ThrowbackThursday

Fort Ticonderoga has recently announced several important preservation projects underway. These projects, totaling more than $2 million, are in the spotlight this May, which is dedicated to #NationalPreservationMonth and celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Today, we are highlighting the Thompson-Pell Research Center. The Thompson-Pell Research Center serves as the museum's research facility and collections storage. Thanks to a recent grant award, Fort Ticonderoga will be able to install an upgraded HVAC system. The newly installed system will ensure the appropriate climate control needed to preserve the hundreds of thousands of objects in our collections held within the building including textiles, documents, weapons, art, archaeological items, and more! This project is made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation Smart Growth Grant. https://www.fortticonderoga.org/news/fort-ticonderoga-highlights-recent-important-preservation-projects-during-national-preservation-month/ #PreservationIsAlways #PreservationMonth #PreservationMatters

May is National Historic Preservation Month, and we're excited to highlight Aurora's structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2016 The City of Aurora has invested over $491,000 in façade improvement grants with Main Street Aurora awarding nearly $22,000 in grants for property improvements in 2016. Former First Evangelical United Church of Christ, 111 Fifth Street is now 1Voice Community Recovery Center. Built by Aurora Baptists in 1848, the Gothic Revival sanctuary is the oldest standing structure built as a house of worship in Aurora. By 1874 the Baptists had relocated to a new church at 219 Main Street, and in 1875 a newly formed German Reformed congregation purchased the former Baptist church for $2,000. In 1911 the façade was altered to create one central front entrance with a steeple replacing the original bell tower. As a Baptist house of worship, the façade had featured two doors, approximately situated where the two front windows are now located. The bell was a gift to the Baptists from the people of Aurora in 1852 and can still fill the neighborhood with its deep, resonating tone. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic places on September 23, 1994. In 2023, Main Street America programs generated $5.68 billion in local reinvestment and catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,556 historic buildings. #HistoricPreservationMonth #IndianaMainStreet #PreserveOurPast #RevitalizeOurDowntowns #InvestInIndiana #historymatters #preservationmatters #auroraindiana #dearborncountyindiana #visitindiana #mainstreetaurora #WeAreMainStreet #goodthingshappeninaurora #livingindiana

The Alliance for Historic Wyoming Watch List brings statewide attention to historic properties in Wyoming that are currently threatened with demolition or neglect. The High Plains Arboretum was originally founded in 1928 as a horticultural research station with goals to find and cultivate flora that could survive on the high plains of Wyoming. It’s considered one of the nation’s most important horticultural sites. The site is in need of care and preservation for a dozen historic buildings, after being under utilized for decades. In 2023, the Mayor of Cheyenne requested State Parks and Cultural Resources to assess the site as a potential historic site, and was determined to hold considerable potential to become a state historic site, however the designation failed introduction by one vote in the 2024 budget session. The Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources committee of the state legislature recently decided against reintroducing the bill in the upcoming session in 2025. We will update with more advocacy opportunities for the High Plains Arboretum in the future. . . #history #historicplaces #explorewyoming #WyomingHistory #preservation #wyoming #historylovers #ThatsWY #historicpreservationmonth #historyfacts #historicwyoming #preservationmatters #cheyenne #cheyennewy #arboretum #arboretum

We continue Preservation Month's 2024 theme, People Saving Places, and now visit the Randolph Neighborhood Association! Thank you to their president, LaTasha Wyche, for answering our questions! Randolph is one of Richmond's oldest Black neighborhoods, largely shaped with attempted erasure by urban renewal policies and projects including the Downtown Expressway. Despite this, the neighborhood is there and the community is strong. Today, Part I: LaTasha Wyche is President of the Randolph Neighborhood Association and a lifetime resident of Randolph “the real westend.” Q. Neighbors coming together are so important in stewarding communities in Richmond. How did you become part of the neighborhood, and the Randolph Neighborhood Association? A. I have been living in this area for most of my life, so I have seen plenty of change in Randolph. I was encouraged to be a part of the Association from a neighbor who motivated me to get involved because the neighborhood was changing and she and some of the longer-term residents were moving out, she wanted to ensure that those of us who remained in the neighborhood continued to have a voice in what happens in our community. I became President after the previous President moved on to bigger and better things. Fifth District Councilperson Liaison, Amy Robins, was the previous President of Randolph Neighborhood Association. Q. Tell me about your neighborhood's culture and history! What are some of your favorite things about your community, and what are challenges? A. Randolph was a historically black neighborhood, named to honor a former African American 19th century educator. The culture of the neighborhood has changed plenty. There was a sense of pride that existed when homes were first built in the neighborhood and even the several years following; we are bordered by Petronius S. Jones Park named for a local leader who was a community advocate. He worked hard to bring improvements to the neighborhood. We have several black churches in the neighborhood and a park named after long-time residents Horace and Laverne Thomas. So, we have some history to be proud of in Randolph! (Continued in comments.)

Aligning with Preservation Month, the latest issue of our biannual Preservation Matters magazine is now available online! At 32 pages, it’s packed to the gills with information on important preservation projects that are occurring throughout Central Kentucky. Featured articles provide key updates on our rehabilitation of Hopemont, our plans for the future of Pope Villa, and our continued agitation to save the 13 historic buildings on E. Maxwell and Stone Ave that may soon be razed for a sprawling apartment tower. The issue also recaps Dr. Zak Leonard’s March lecture on the history of the Blue Grass Trust’s campaigns from its inception in 1955; an expanded webinar version of this presentation is now viewable on our YouTube channel. BGT’s ongoing legal challenge to the constitutionality of KRS 100.3471 is also covered in detail. Applied to a planning/zoning dispute, this law would require nonprofits and neighborhood associations to post a bond of up to $250,000 upon requesting a judicial appeal. The core of this issue highlights exciting preservation developments in our capital city of Frankfort. These include the adaptive reuse of an 1879 warehouse into the Delegate Hotel, the conversion of the Sower hardware store into mixed-use space, and the transformation of a stately 1815 house into the Ashbrook Hotel. A history of two Frankfort plaque properties – 335 Murray Street and 301 Paul Sawyier Drive – further speaks to the evolution of the city in the twentieth century. Another article discusses the nomination of the 1921 Green Hills Missionary Baptist Church to the National Register of Historic Places, which made use of Frankfort’s seminal African American Historic Context Report. This issue also delves into several Lexington-based projects including the sensitive renovation of the John McMurtry-built house at 444 W. Third Street and successful fundraising for the restoration of the 1795 Cartmell House. Clearly, there is no shortage of preservation success stories in Central Kentucky! To access Preservation Matters, follow the link in our bio or visit the “Resources” section of our website: https://www.bluegrasstrust.org/resources.

#ItsYourChurch Walking around Westlake today with my preservation pals from @esotouric, we came across some remarkable signs and people. On the Monday after Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was hard at work. Edwin, an inspector at a construction site, emigrated to the US when he was young. After the COVID tragedy took his wife, rather than feel defeated, he embraced his faith and deepened his relationship with God. He said "The Holy Spirit will point the way: 'Go here, don't go there,' and I listen." It was intensely simple and inspiring. On the front of the nearly-demolished M Flax building, a chalk cross was lovingly drawn on the facade. A few blocks away, at the Park Theater, the outline of a mezuzah was left in the red paint, two faith traditions, the red of Pentecost and the practice of the Mezuzah, colliding as a reminder of the diverse community around Westlake. A few inches to the right, a Memento Mori talisman, propped on some moulding -- a reminder of our impermanence. #Pentecost #HolySpiritatWork #mezuzah #ChalkCross #MementoMori #Westlake #OldCatholic #preservationmatters

Our next myth about historic preservation is that it stifles economic growth. 𝘈𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘦, 𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘦̀𝘳𝘦. Historic preservation is 𝐁𝐈𝐆 business and contributes significantly to our local economy! Think about it... ▶️ When you travel, what kinds of things do you do? If you visit a historical site, museum, or the like, you would be classified as a heritage tourist. 📍 In Columbia in 2022, heritage tourism contributed a total of $2.5 billion to our local economy, including: ✔️ Over 5,800 jobs directly related to the industry, equalling over $180 million in income... oh, and that is not factoring in the indirect and induced labor, which created another 1,500 jobs and $84+ million in income for Columbians. ✔️ Direct state and local taxes related to heritage tourism totaled over $37 million. So, if you think, "well, I don't work in a tourism-related industry," you live in here and therefore you benefit from the tax income. This. Impacts. Everyone. ▶️ Heritage tourism and the hundreds of millions of dollars it brings into our local economy cannot fully exist without historical places of significance. See? 👉 Preservation means ✨ jobs and tax revenue, ✨ not just pretty old buildings. Yet another reason why #PreservationMatters. 🫶

Elsing Green, Pamunkey River, King William County, VA (before 1690, 1715) One of the grandest and best preserved homes of early Virginia, Elsing Green was built before 1690 as a hunting lodge for Captain John West. He was a one-time Governor of Virginia and younger brother to Thomas West, Lord De La Warre who sailed to Jamestown in 1610 just after the “starving times” to direct the fourth supply mission and for whom the State of Delaware and nearby town of West Point got their names. Still privately-owned by the same family, the main house was built and has remained almost entirely unaltered since 1715. #virginia #virginiaarchitecture #kingwilliamcountyva #elsinggreen #accidentallywesanderson #wesandersonstyle #wesandersonplanet #MidAtlantic #classicalarchitecture #georgianarchitecture #republic_of_symmetry #visitvirginia #loveVA #virginiaisforlovers #preservationmatters #ifthesewallscouldtalk #arquitetura #arkitektur #roadsideamerica #yescapitolregion #atlasobscura #colonial #capitalregionusa #brickstory #archi_ologie #vastearlyamerica #dezeen #designboom #architecturalphotography #igerusa

May is National Historic Preservation Month, and we're excited to highlight Aurora's structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Formerly a livery stable that had burned, land at 321-325 Second St was acquired on August 2, 1878 for the sum of $2,500. Built in 1878 by architect Thomas Lindsay the Leive, Parks and Stapp Opera House, also known as the Grand Opera House, is a three-story, Victorian: Italianate style brick building. William Leive was born in Germany and came to Aurora in 1861 and was a watch-maker and dealer in jewelry. John A Parks, a farmer in Hogan Township and lawyer and David H. Stapp was of Ripley County and a lawyer. The Grand Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 20, 1994. Long before the dawn of the Internet and Zoom, real-time global audio communications goes back to the days of Tesla and Marconi in the early 1900s. Sometimes researching the history of local buildings leads to unexpected places, for example, the discovery of the second oldest amateur radio club in the USA -- located right here in Tacoma, along with its small museum ... since 1916! The Radio Club of Tacoma was established in 1916. Beginning in 1931, its first clubhouse at 1462 S Oakes St. in a small building that had been built for that purpose. With growth in membership, in 1958 the Radio Club of Tacoma purchased a house and large lot at 1249 S Washington St. and converted it to their clubhouse. The Club would later establish a small radio history museum there as well, the W7OS Antique Radio Museum, named for the call sign of one of the Club's founding members, Dr. Clifford J. Spike (1900 - 1991). He and other Club members are seen in one of the photos, taken in 1951, and he was profiled in a News Tribune article back in 2000. The Club and its long history in Tacoma will be recognized at the City's 2024 Historic Preservation Awards event on May 23, 6-8 p.m. at the Blue Mouse Theater in Tacoma's historic Proctor District. It will receive an award for "Outstanding Heritage/Legacy Business." Congratulations to the Radio Club of Tacoma. Since 2016 The City of Aurora has invested over $491,000 in façade improvement grants with Main Street Aurora awarding nearly $22,000 in grants for property improvements in 2016. The Dr. George Sutton Medical Office Building is located at 315 Third Street. It was built about 1870, and is a small two-story, Second Empire style brick building. It sits on a limestone block foundation and has a mansard roof. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places September 8, 1994. Dr. George Sutton born June 10, 1812 in Greater London, England began his medical practice in the spring of 1836, was the seventh mayor of Aurora from 1863-1867 and President of the Indiana State Medical Society. Dr. Sutton died June 13, 1886 in Aurora at age 74. He is buried in River View Cemetery and was an original incorporator of the cemetery and acted as its first president. In 2023, Main Street America programs generated $5.68 billion in local reinvestment and catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,556 historic buildings. #HistoricPreservationMonth #IndianaMainStreet #PreserveOurPast #RevitalizeOurDowntowns #InvestInIndiana #historymatters #preservationmatters #auroraindiana #dearborncountyindiana #visitindiana #mainstreetaurora #WeAreMainStreet #goodthingshappeninaurora #livingindiana

According to Richard Waterhouse, "one symbol seen on a young person’s grave is the Lamb of God which conveys innocence, protection from God, and Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. Note that the lamb is resting in front of rocks which conveys that the child’s short life was built on a firm foundation so she will have eternal life." Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site holds immense historical significance as one of North America's most extensive and well-preserved collections of Native American rock art. Dating back thousands of years, the petroglyphs depict a rich tapestry of cultural and spiritual themes, offering valuable insights into the beliefs, practices, and daily lives of indigenous peoples in what would become Wyoming. Its preservation and study contribute to our understanding of prehistoric cultures and the continuity of indigenous traditions in the American West. Preservation measures include physical protection of the rock surfaces through barriers and signage to prevent vandalism and erosion caused by human interaction, as well as educational programs and interpretive materials to raise awareness of the historic significance of the site. . . #preservationmatters #historylovers #ThatsWY #HistoricPlaces #preservation #explorewyoming #wyoming #history #WyomingHistory #historicpreservation #thatswy #historicpreservationmonth #anthropology #anthropology #archeology #archeologyart #petroglyphs

Pretty much love everything about this early twentieth-century commercial building. The facade, despite being only two bays wide, exudes a gravitas found in more substantial buildings. The rear addition tells the story of someone doing something right long enough that their success required a bigger footprint for their business. #preservationmonth #historicpreservation #preservationiscool #preservationmatters #preservationinsc #vintagemasonry

Faces of Woolsey (and nearby Brooks) Stella Gay Woolsey Stella was born into the family of Wiley Jones Gay and Pelatiah McLeroy Gay in 1856. She married Charles Reagan Woolsey on December 27, 1876. The couple first settled in Woolsey, Georgia and relocated to Brooks, Georgia, around 1900, a place they would call home for the rest of their lives. Stella was primarily a homemaker, a loving wife, and an affectionate mother to nine children. Her house was not just a home but a sanctuary where values were instilled, character was built, and love was the fundamental thread that held everyone together. Her deep care for her loved ones' spiritual welfare was evident in how she nurtured her family and guided them through life's complexities. Stella's talents were not confined to her home. She was a skilled seamstress and dressmaker, with her beautiful handiwork admired by all who saw it. Her creations were not mere clothes but a reflection of her aesthetic sense and meticulous attention to detail. Stella's love for her community was just as strong as her love for her family. She believed that every small act of kindness could make a difference. Stella Gay Woolsey passed away in 1922 and is buried in Historic Woolsey Cemetery next to her husband Charles Reagan Woolsey. #woolseygeorgia  #friendsofhistoricwoolsey  #historicwoolseychurch  #preservationmatters  #historicwoolsey #facesofwoolsey #smalltownlife  #smalltowngeorgia  #historicpreservationmatters  #historicruralchurches  #ruralchurches #woolseyga  #fayettecountyga #smalltownlandmarks #georgialandmarks #fayettecountyga #historicwoolseycemetery #historicpreservation #georgiacemetery #southerncemeteries #storiesmatter #historicwoolseystories #nonprofit #nonprofitlife Photo Courtesy of Mayor Gary Laggis

🌿🌳🌲The Daniel Boone Homestead is dedicated to the preservation of its significant historic structures, collections, and cultural landscapes. Preservation includes the maintenance and repair of existing historic materials and the retention of a property’s form as it has evolved over time. As a historic site, the focus is often on the buildings and collections, however, the Homestead preserves one of the largest, if not the single largest, tracts of open land in Exeter Township. At 579 acres, the property is the largest state-owned historic site. Within the current site is the entire tract of the original 250 acres owned by Daniel’s parents – Squire and Sarah Boone. In addition to the historic buildings located within the 250-acre tract, many natural features are preserved, reflecting the cultural heritage of the landscape. Tree lines and hedgerows define past cultivated fields and property lines. There are remnants of a sunken lane which marks the original internal road leading to the Boone House as well as a remnant of a pre-1750 irrigation system dug by the Boone’s. Check in next week as we continue to celebrate National Preservation Month! #danielboonehomestead #culturallandscape #historiclandscape #landscape #Preservation #preservation #preservationmatters #PreservationMonth #NationalPreservationMonth #nationalpreservationmonth #heritage #openland #openlands #openspace

Named after Captain William J. Fetterman, who perished in a Native American ambush near the site in 1866, Fort Fetterman played a crucial role in protecting immigrants along the Bozeman Trail and served as a base for military expeditions against Native American tribes. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, the fort's preservation has involved archaeological research to uncover and interpret its remains, restoration of key structures, and the development of interpretive exhibits to educate visitors about its role in American history. . . #explorewyoming #preservationmatters #history #historicplaces #Wyominghistory #historylovers #historicpreservationmonth #historicbuildings #HistoricSpaces #historicpreservation #thatswy #preservation #wyoming #HistoricPlaces #WyomingHistory #ThatsWY #historyfacts #fort #historicforts #fortfetterman #frontierhistory

• • Archaeological discovery from Oslo! A medieval bunad clasp? This brooch is from medieval Oslo, dated between 1100-1500. A practical and beautiful brooch. It is decorated with both a fishbone pattern a Greek cross. Fort Ticonderoga has recently announced several important preservation projects underway. These projects, totaling more than $2 million, are in the spotlight this May, which is dedicated to #NationalPreservationMonth and celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Today, we are highlighting the Smith’s Forge. Built in ca: 1761, the Smith’s Forge was recently the focus of a Conditions Survey to determine the best way to preserve the remains of this structure, considered one of the few unrestored and untouched 18th-century architectural features still standing at Fort Ticonderoga. Shortly after establishing Fort Carillon (later named Ticonderoga), the French Army began the construction of a series of ancillary structures, including the Smith’s Forge, to the south of the fort, beginning in early 1756. This area — known as the lower town, or the French Village — housed a number of proto-industrial structures that supported the military activities of the armies who garrisoned Ticonderoga in the 18th century. This project was funded by The Technical Assistance Grant program that is a partnership between the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Preservation League of New York State, made possible by NYSCA with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This important first stage of study, completed in partnership with John G. Waite Associates, Architects, lays a foundation for future stabilization and eventual public visitation. The Alliance for Historic Wyoming Watch List brings statewide attention to historic properties in Wyoming that are currently threatened with demolition or neglect. The Aladdin Coal Tipple, located approximately 2.5 miles east of Aladdin on Highway 24, is one of the last surviving structures of its kind. Built between 1888 and 1895, the wooden tipple once served a vital role in coal mining in the region and was stabilized and restored once before in 1991. Now, the area near the Tipple is blocked off by barbed wire and warning signs, as it is in danger of imminent collapse at any time. Advocates in Crook County are worried that a strong storm may spell the end of this unique and treasured look into mining history in Wyoming. Surveys have been conducted for the feasibility of re-stabilizing the structure, estimating a cost of up to $1.2 million. County commissioners have instead decided to allow the building to collapse on its own. There is still a chance to save this historic structure for future generations, but the clock is ticking. We hope you will help us advocate and raise awareness for efforts of Aladdin Coal Tipple’s continued preservation. . . #preservationmatters #WyomingHistory #explorewyoming #historylovers #Wyominghistory #HistoricPlaces #preservation #historicpreservationmonth #thatswy #historicplaces #historicbuildings #wyoming #history #historicpreservation #HistoricSpaces #Mining #mining #Coal #coalmining #mininghistory #aladdinwy

Woolsey is a small town with a rich history, located in the state of Georgia. Friends of Historic Woolsey has been on the lookout for old photos of the historic church, particularly ones that featured its steeple. We knew based on personal accounts that the church had a steeple, but we couldn’t find a photo of it. It was almost like the steeple was hiding from us! One day Mort Sams sent us a photo from the Bobby Jackson Collection. The photo, taken by a local resident, was not of the church itself, but of the stores in the town. The steeple, standing tall and proud, was visible in the background. This photo provided a valuable piece of the puzzle, allowing us to confirm the steeple's existence. This unexpected discovery serves as a reminder of the importance of looking closely at historic photos. You never know what might be hiding in the background, waiting to be revealed. So, grab your old photos, dust them off, and take a closer look. You might just uncover another piece of our town's history. And don't forget, if you have any historic photos of Woolsey, we'd love to see them. They could contain valuable information or hidden gems that add to our understanding of the town's past. So, share them with us on our Facebook page or send them to our email. Let's continue to piece together the puzzle of Woolsey's history, one photo at a time! Aurora First Prebysterian Church has a local history as far back as 1826, though the formal organization is noted as 1844. After using other local sanctuaries and buildings for services during the first six years, the congregation had finished the basement of their present church building and was able to use it by December 8, 1850. The Greek Revival structure was completed in 1856. During construction the town council had asked for permission to put Aurora’s town clock in the church’s tower with the understanding that the town would then maintain the steeple and the four-faced clock. The town maintained both until 1981 when ownership was handed over to the congregation. The sanctuary continues to be furnished with many original pieces including ornate Victorian pulpit furniture as well as the pews and their gates, which helped minimize draftiness when the building was new. A 1906 pipe organ is a prominent feature in the well-kept sanctuary as are the beautiful central chandeliers. The sanctuary’s windows were restored in the late 1990’s. AFPC was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, September 8, 1994. In 2023, Main Street America programs generated $5.68 billion in local reinvestment and catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,556 historic buildings. #HistoricPreservationMonth #IndianaMainStreet #PreserveOurPast #RevitalizeOurDowntowns #InvestInIndiana #historymatters #preservationmatters #auroraindiana #dearborncountyindiana #visitindiana #mainstreetaurora #WeAreMainStreet #goodthingshappeninaurora #livingindiana

These projects, totaling more than $2 million, are in the spotlight this May, which is dedicated to #NationalPreservationMonth and celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Today, we are highlighting The Log House Welcome Center. The recent much-needed restoration includes a new roof, structural stabilization, and interior restoration. This project is addressing priority structural repairs and the much-needed remodeling of the bathrooms. Built in the first quarter of the 20th century, and expanded several times, the Log House is part of Fort Ticonderoga’s layers of historic architecture and is considered one of America’s oldest continuously operating “roadhouses” associated with a destination. The 1852 Hoffman Hotel in Dallas, North Carolina, provided lodging to visitors to the town and for court sessions since Dallas was the original county seat for Gaston County from 1846 until 1911. It was a thriving hub of government, court, and business activity during that time, and the Hoffman Hotel was always bustling. Rooms were also used to house the men who attended the original Gaston College, and the third floor was used to sequester the jury if a trial was happening at the courthouse across the street. Today, the Town of Dallas is experiencing a resurgence and is making outstanding strides in preserving many of its historic buildings. The Hoffman Hotel is now the Gaston County Museum of Art & History @gastoncountymuseum , where you can learn more about the history of this part of North Carolina and view three existing period rooms. #southernreverie

Look at this beautiful watercolor painting of a 1907 Queen Anne in Maury County, Tennessee. The talented artist is Mary Lehner of @lehnerfineart. As often seen in this style of home is the asymmetrical shape, a covered front entrance, and a wrap-around porch. Its siding is a gentle green color with contrasting patterned blue shingles surrounding the home's upper story windows on the front gable with a side-facing shed dormer above. This home boasts irregular roof shapes and combined textures. This gorgeous home has a stunning octagonal shaped turret with a domed roof and finial to top it off. 🩷🩷 . . . . . . . . #historicalbuildings #sustainableinfluencers #sustainability #historicalhouse #maurycounty #maurycountytn #tennesseeliving #historicalphotos #historicalhome #adaptivereuse #historical_place #historicalpictures #preservationmatters #propertypreservation #culturalpreservation #adaptivereusearchitecture #repurposedmaterials #preservationist #heritagepreservation #historicalpreservation #historicpreservationmatters #sustainablepreservation #experiencemaury #embodiedcarbon #socialsustainability #tnpreservation #tnsustainablepreservation #historicalhomesofamerica #historicaltnproperties

May is dedicated to #NationalPreservationMonth and celebrates the nation's heritage through historic places. Fort Ticonderoga proudly leads the nation as one of the earliest historic preservation endeavors when William Ferris Pell purchased the historic garrison grounds in 1820 and committed to its protection. For centuries Ticonderoga has been a place of pilgrimage, offering a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices of those who have gone before us who gave us the freedom we cherish as a people. Today we continue the preservation mission because Ticonderoga must remain an important national touchstone, a place of remembrance, learning and inspiration for generations to come. Click the link to read more about the important projects underway, including the major restoration project on the fort’s north demi-lune that began in 2022 and continues into 2024 to address water management, structural integrity, and veneer replacement (pictured here). https://www.fortticonderoga.org/news/fort-ticonderoga-highlights-recent-important-preservation-projects-during-national-preservation-month/ #PreservationIsAlways #PreservationMonth #PreservationMatters
