🇦🇺 1939 Matchless G80 Clubman 🇦🇺 What became known as the Matchless ‘G’ range of overhead valve singles first appeared in mid 1935 with two 350cc models; the G3 road model and a trials version called the Clubman Special. In short order the range expanded to include a 250 (the G2) and a 500 in both single exhaust port and twin exhaust port (the G80). The earlier G80 models were scarce in their day, particularly the up-spec and more expensive Clubman and Super Clubman models. They’re even rarer now, which made the appearance of Ken Robinson’s 1939 G80 model at a rally event a cause of much interest. 🇦🇺 1952 BSA B31 🏁 There was not much to get excited about in Britain in 1945, apart from winning the war that is. The country was in economic ruin, thanks to the war effort. But there was a strong desire to get on with life, however frugal it may have been, and to switch factories back to civilian production after six years of military endeavours. BSA, at the time the largest motorcycle company in Britain, got the ball rolling in August 1945 with the 350cc B31, its first all-new post war design, which admittedly, incorporated more than a few items to the pre-war range, including the M23 500cc Silver Star-inspired crankcases. 🇦🇺 Bikes will run at 2024 Historic Winton 🏁 Following the issue of a permit from Motorcycling Australia, organisers of the annual historic car and motorcycle meeting at Winton have announced that motorcycles will be included in the running of the 47th Historic Winton event on 25-26 May, 2024. The Historic Motorcycle Racing Association Victoria (HMRAV) advises that entries are now open through Ridernet closing on May 3rd. The grid will cater for a maximum of 31 solos and 20 sidecars for up to Period 5 machines. Visit the link in our profile for more information. Historic Winton – Australia’s longest running, all-historic motor race meeting is one of the largest sporting events in rural Victoria. The excitement of yesteryear grandeur blends with competition pace, creating a unique atmosphere at the spectacular rural location of Winton Motor Raceway. Over 400 historic racing cars, motorbikes and sidecars from the 1920s to the 1980s will battle it out for line honours and there’s loads more to do. The competition paddock is open to spectators where they can see hundreds of the much-loved, historic vehicles of competitors. Anniversary displays by clubs and individuals are located around the site too. All visitors are welcome to bring their historic vehicles to join in the fun at this iconic event. 1971 BSA Rocket 3 A75V BSA/Triumph had put on a brave face in the early seventies and firmly embraced the American racing scene as a means to demonstrate the capabilities of their triples, and to a large degree they had succeeded thanks to the efforts of John Cooper, Dick Mann and quite a few others. But racing success still did not address the basic shortcomings of the BSA in the eyes of the Americans. It needed a makeover – and fast, because back in boggy Birmingham, the parent company was bleeding. Finally finished the Sorrento! I bought this one from a guy in Heidelberg in November 2022. Back then I had other plans for the bike but it was harder than I thought to get anything done (standing) as I waited for my foot to heal after surgery. As I got better and had time one of the spokes on the cool Mavic rims got broken off, and I couldn’t get the cassette off to repair so I went to @bergkoenig.bike to get it sorted. The next problem was to fit the Shimano Mountain LX front derailleur (many years ago I found an old broken bike someone had thrown away and it had a complete set of Shimano Mountain LX components!), which didn’t fit the frame diameter or the position, so I had to re-use the original one. But I managed to save the Mountain LX rear derailleur and the awesome-looking brakes. The only problem was that the screws on the brakes were stuck after 30 years of no use and I couldn’t find the right braking pads. I bought some V-brake pads. Not the best fit but they do work. The Sorrento came with GripShits so I switched to SunRace thumb shifters. Great feel and worked without any adjustment to the rear and front derailleur! Neville Doyle – Gentleman Tuner In the annals of motorcycle sport, there are some famous names behind the names. Bathurst supremo Ron Toombs and spannerman Tony Henderson, Kenny Roberts and his wrench and mentor Kel Caruthers took three consecutive World 500cc titles, Charlie Ogden tuning Lionel Van Praag’s JAP to take the very first World Speedway title in 1936. Add to that list Neville Doyle, who not only guided Gregg Hansford to Grand Prix success, but had a hand in the latter part of the extensive career of Ken Rumble, one of Australia’s most versatile riders.
