The New Year often brings new fitness goals and exercise programs. However, if not approached properly, can lead to overuse injuries. An overuse injury is microtrauma to soft tissue (bone, ligament, tendon, muscle) from repetitive use and/or overtraining which can lead to pain and inflammation. Most overuse injuries can be avoided with proper conditioning and training. Myofascial cupping, or better known as just cupping, is one of many tools that physical therapists can treat muscle pain and tightness. Cupping can be used to treat multiple areas of pain, whether in the neck, upper back, low back, shoulder, knee or hip. Cupping utilizes cups of various sizes and the use of vacuum pressure to temporary hinder blood flow to the affected area for a short period of time, resulting in an increased flood of blood and associated helpful cells into the area upon removal of the cup.
