This is Renee. She lives at the campground I regularly visit with her son, daughter-in-law, and two grand babies. I gifted her a small print I captured of her son and grandson when I saw her while walking my dogs one afternoon. She invited me to their birthday celebration the following weekend and was very appreciative of the image. This is why I do what I do. My favorite places to hike in Alabama are those somewhat forgotten or infrequently visited. Most of the time I don’t know much about them until I get there so I’m guaranteed a surprise! I would consider Perry Lakes Park to be one of those places, and a hidden gem. Years ago I visited the park after a heavy rain that caused the trail and road to the beach to flood. Both routes were impassable. I left sorely disappointed and hadn’t been back since lol. So I didn’t do a scout hike beforehand, which I rarely forego when planning a group hike. That and my previous visit had me a little nervous to say the least. When we arrived the bugs greeted us with open arms. Perry Lakes Park is a bit of a wild place that needs some love. Someone said it looked like something out of The Jungle Book. The trail was overgrown but definitely passable. The birding tower was in good condition and the views from the top—breathtaking. I could sense right away why the place is known for birding. The icing on the cake was a true beach next to the clear Cahaba River. I feel our group is getting wiser and more versatile with each hike. Hiking is an inherently unpredictable hobby but we do have some control over what we’re going to get by doing our research and planning accordingly. I would say everything about this hike was a success 💙 P.S. Weyerhaeuser, the big wood products company, has a plant near Millport, AL. and they were a client of mine back in the 1980's. The drive there from Birmingham goes through some wonderful farming country. One day, on my way back home, I saw a farmer climbing down from his bright green tractor. He didn't ask why I wanted to make his picture, he just cheerfully said "Sure!" I had no reason, actually. Other than the light being right and he, and his tractor, looked so iconic; I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Whatever I wrote his name on is long gone. The pattern I have noticed in my work is that the bulk of my work is derived from a simple walk with my dogs. Although they are rarely seen in front of the camera, it is comforting to remember that day knowing they were there with me behind the scenes. This image was from this past summer of Ricky Bobby while I was fostering him to health before his adoption. Walking my dogs encourages me to explore, and it also encourages me to speak with strangers, photograph them, and connect to others who connect to dogs. Most importantly, it reminds me to live and see life as a journey.. Chilly weather calls for soup! Everyone's favorite seasonal staple returns to the table THIS WEEKEND at @birdsongfarmersmarket. North African Red Lentil Soup aka Egyptian Lentil Soup aka lentil soup when you're in Egypt. Each region boasts a different recipe. This is recipe I grew up loving and the one I enjoy sharing with you all. A hearty soup featuring house-made veggie broth, red lentils, fried onions, charred carrots and a few other special ingredients like cumin and coriander come together to make a deliciously perfect fall weather dish. Get those holiday orders in before Nov. 16th. If you haven't seen the menu, I'm here to tell you that you can order your very own little Abadir's custom cake for your holiday spread. Definitely not as big as this cake, but it will be equally as beautiful and delicious. Went festive with the cake combo. I'm doing my super soft spiced sweet potato crumb with a "caramel" frost that has the consistency of a lovely cream cheese icing, minus all that harsh sweetness. Toasted cinnamon spiced walnuts with a pear jam in the center. Think classic spice cake, Abadir's style. Definitely one of my absolute favorite cakes on the menu thus far. Each cake will be a uniquely decorated two-layer 6" cake featuring fun piping and fun flowers from the Abadir's garden. Cakes are vegan-friendly and naturally gluten-free. Cakes do contain walnuts, cashews and almonds.

So excited about the recent flour upgrade I made for my breads and pastries. I’m now using Sprouted Whole Spelt, whole wheat bread and unbleached bread flour from @lindleymills in our breads and some cakes and pastries. All organic. All grown and produced in Graham, North Carolina. Eventually we’ll get some Alabama mills on the menu. Still finding ways to make that happen. For now, this is a good step forward for this little venture. Living in rural Alabama makes sourcing kinda difficult. I’m constantly looking for regional farmers and producers to support, all while keeping things accessible for folks who come to the table + supporting the future employees of Abadir’s! Look at this soft, puffy pocket filled sourdough loaf. Perfection. (PS - you can order a full size sourdough loaf for the holidays. Just saying...)
