In further observance of the Boston Tea Party, I present "Sally Hewes's Guide to Dressing to be Outdoors on a Mid-December Night In 1773 Boston." *Note: you can ignore the nailpolish, which I wasn't going to take off for this. 1. Start with linen shift, stays, linen underpetticoat, silk stockings layered under wool stockings, and your friend's shoes which are slightly larger than your own and can fit the stockings. 2. Add madder flannel petticoat, pockets, and a wool/silk handkerchief. 3. Add a cat. 4. Remove cat. Add forest green worsted petticoat, buttercream worsted bedgown, and linen lappet cap. 5. Get that cat back up there. 6. Get out of here, cat. Add mustard cross-barred flannel bedgown, linsey-woolsey handkerchief, and blue checked linen apron. 7. Today marks the 245th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. This evening, the events of December 16, 1773 will be reenacted by scores of historical interpreters and hundreds of spectators in Old South and at the site of the tea destruction itself. For the first time since the event was started in 2012, I won't be there, and it makes my heart ache on top of everything else. I'll be returning to work tomorrow, but my spirit will be downtown tonight with my friends. "My Last Costume" is the theme for today's @redthreaded #fallforcostume challenge. Technically I've worn other "costumes" (I prefer to call my 18th century wardrobe "clothing") since this pic was taken, and I'm always making garments for other people, but this bedgown is the most recent piece I've made for myself! It's a reproduction fabric from CW. I was particularly drawn to the fact that there are only 2 colors in the print, which would have made it a more affordable textile for a working woman like Sally Hewes.
