California micro climates are a cool feature of lifestyle here. While it is 100F degree in my town in East Bay I can hop in a car and in an hour be in 60F foggy North Bay. There are 600+ hiking trails in the SF Bay Area. Alamere Falls Hike is one of 2 waterfalls in California that empties into the ocean. Can you name the other? To get to the trailhead, drive to the Palomarin trailhead in Marin County. If you’re going on a weekend, make sure to get there before 8am because the parking lot fills up by then. This hike is 14 miles round trip but not to worry! You do not need to train for this hike because it’s almost all flat. I’d rate it a 5/10 difficulty. It’s a beautiful scenic trail where you will pass by eucalyptus groves, lakes, and walk along the beach. Bring lots of water and pack some food to eat when you get to the waterfall. There is a shortcut on the way out, but it’s hard to find. You’ll be able to spot the shortcut trail when you get to the waterfall, so you can take the shorter route back. Kids need some nature! My 5-yr old counted 13 different species of “buhhhhds” (birds) during our 1.5 hr hike around Schollenberger Park in Petaluma. This was our day-after activity (previous day was ninja course, see previous post!) and we wanted to do something that would give us undistracted family time together. It was so nice! Doesn’t the dried cracked earth seem like we’re in an entirely different world? 💰 No fees for parking or entrance. 🚽 Bathrooms are available at the beginning of the looped trail. 🤓 Bring binoculars if you have them! So many cool birds to see. 🗺 it’s about 2 miles(?) around the main loop. It took us 1.5 hours bc we stopped to explore the dried lands, find rocks, and let Google help us identify birds. 💦 Bring water! There’s almost no shade. 🐕 Looked like a dog-friendly trail 🚲 it’s bumpy and gravel-ly. But very flat. I wouldn’t recommend strollers or bikes. Such a random park (located behind office buildings) but a wonderful walk with plenty of benches! Hiking with cows! (The cows were an unexpected treat). Fairmont Ridge has gorgeous views of Lake Chabot and also the Bay! You can stay on the paved path and be up and down in less than an hour. Or you can be a bit more adventurous and veer off into the side trails! The first hill is STEEP, just to warn you! My 5-yr old can do it, so it’s not crazy, but I was definitely huffing and puffing today. After that initial hill, it’s very doable. Free parking, free admission. Plenty of street parking too. No bathrooms, but enough benches to rest on! Now that they go to different schools and the kindergartner spends more time in his classroom than outdoors, I make it a point to take them out for a fun outing on at least one day of the weekend. One of our favorites is Hall Memorial park in Milpitas. This part is adjacent to a school and there are several play structures to keep the kids entertained. Walk a bit on little trail over a creek and the park opens up to two large ponds that have many kinds of ducks swimming and lazing around. This side of the park is serene and almost magical. There are trails around the ponds that are very easy. The park is also frequented by a variety of birds. What this park is good for: Play structures for all age groups Tennis courts Sand play Lots of tree cover Pretty walk near the ponds This park is not great for: Picnics.
