The “kaypoh” (busybody) queen is a 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 staple— a floating interviewer who collects the personal stories of our participants. For the last two months, our Kaypoh Queens were invited by @bricolage.sg to be a part of 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, documenting their participants’ stories as part of the communal dinner experience (which featured a host of inspiring ecologically-conscious chefs and restaurants from the region!). *** 👚 Reflections From A Guniang: Xin Each week’s Kaypoh Queen questions were inspired by the sessions’ themes. However, I was clear that I wanted it a spectrum of questions, ranging from silly to serious, nostalgic to the speculative. The idea was to elicit personal responses and anecdotes so that participants could feel connected to these larger topics and issues — even if they were new to the subject. For example, the question “Do you have a dish your family used to make, but no longer does? Why have they stopped?” from the Sustainability from Tradition session incited a three-way, 15 minute conversation reminiscing about the kekek fish: once a wet market staple but has largely disappeared from our dining tables in the past three decades. The fact that these stories came from participants who didn’t especially identify themselves as “green” or “eco-conscious” is a reminder that storytelling and the arts can be a powerful tool in opening conversations about climate issues. Of course, it was also exciting to hear first-hand how the panels and presentations have inspired the participants; to catch-up with old Tuckshop friends (thank you for coming up to say hi!) and to meet inspiring folks who are making change happen in their own ways!"
With four distinctly different programmes, how do we create one artwork to encapsulate the entire festival? We talk to creator and Visual Communications Lead Teh Xiang Her about her creative process for this year's festival key art! “I wanted to capture the magic of the theatre through the main visual, and showcase the festival’s unique atmosphere and playful spirit. To do so, I created a world where the stories, characters and programme elements are fully integrated. I picked recognisable visual elements from every programme; for example the dolphins from wee Question Mark, or the hula-hoops that Teacher Red often uses in her classes. These are little “Easter eggs” for festival-goers. The main focal point is the bird, which symbolises freedom and flight (and is also inspired by the real birds that visit my balcony at home). Combined, these elements create a rich visual tapestry filled with stories and imagination. For colours, I chose to break away from stereotypical gender colours (e.g. blue and pink), and to use a neutral palette to demonstrate the festival’s values of inclusivity and openness. For me, each design is a new exploration and learning process. I can’t wait to continue experimenting with different visual styles and techniques (who know, maybe Mr Bird will have some new friends join him! 🤭)

What's unique about The Singing Haven? In addition to Haven Classes, our Studio Sessions (1hr, 2-4pax) allows for focused individual voice work on a weekday evening of your choice - once a month, up to 2 sessions a month! You can bring any song of your choice and work on your vocal technique directly with our friendly & patient lead vocal coach, choral conductor & acapella instructor Kester Tay. For partners or friends keen to sing duets, or small friend groups interested in your own group ideas, you can also bring a song and work on it together in the Studio Sessions. In The Singing Haven, every singer will create their own Singer's Profile on their first Studio Session, which will contain a progressive singing plan for your individual voice. You'll use your Singer's Profile to visually track your progress towards achieving your vocal technique goals!
Our Foundational Sessions are meant to strengthen the beginner voice, who may find pitching or supporting a tone a challenge (and thats okay)! These sessions will empower you in these areas: - Breathing - Phonation (creating a tone) - Supporting - Building a stronger sense of pitch - Internal listening & aural skills - Vocal anatomy - Music reading - Rhythm Depending on your ability to match a pitch, we may recommend you to complete and pass our Foundational Sessions before we feel you are ready to hop in for our Haven classes. Think of these as focused Studio Sessions with fellow singers who are also learning & working on the same skills as you! With time, patience and consistency (and a really wide vocal toolbox of exercises from our vocal coach!), you will be able to sing the way you want - and it all starts with a well-built foundation.

We offer: - Haven Classes - Studio Sesssions - Foundational Sessions Haven Classes (1.5h) are run weekly on Sat, and are conducted in a pop-choir style. You will learn to build pop vocal technique and project, pitch and shape your tone as a vocal soloist, while also learning ensemble skills such as rhythm, blend, following and leading. The Haven Classes prepare you for an exciting pop performance at the end of a semester, a culmination of our group efforts. See the next post for more!
You name it, we sing it! You'll get to sing all types of fun iconic pop anthems and even acapella mashups of your favourite songs and artistes! From Disney classics to love ballads from the 2000s, pop anthem hits from Coldplay, funk awesomeness of Bruno Mars, high-octane EDM hits, groovy R&B tunes, soulful oldies in beautiful 4-part harmony, popular musical theater numbers, and more. Each semester of classes is marked by a performance at the end of a season - our concerts will feature a wide variety of song genres that everyone can relate to and feel strongly for.
Not at all! Singing experience is welcome, but not necessary. We believe that learning to sing can be much simpler than typical music schools tend to try to sell you. For intermediate/advanced singers with choral or singing backgrounds, we welcome you to join us - make new singing friends and continue to keep singing in your life journey, and make even more advanced progress via our Haven Classes & Studio Sessions. With the right focus and consistency, the average singer should be able to identify clear improvements in vocal ability, self confidence & mental self-image after - 1 month - 3 months - 6 months - 1 year Every 6 months after, if you have been actively working on the progressive singing plan crafted for each individual in your Singer's Profile, you will be able to sense, track and indicate your vocal growth and gains. If you're serious, anyone can get pretty decent in a much lesser time than you think - we really just have to tell ourselves "Today" instead of "One Day"!

Building vocal stamina and power takes time, and as a pre-requisite we must first recognise the correct sensation of a healthy, fully-adducted vocal tone - that is resonant, not airy, and can be added healthy vocal weight upon. Adding vocal weight on top of airiness or other poorly-functioning vocal strains is a recipe for vocal damage if strained and prolonged over time - please don't do this! We provide vocal adduction exercises (backed by science & research!) to help you improve and totally eliminate an airy tone in our classes, and will teach you to engage the right vocal and breathing musculature needed to build a solid and powerful voice. Your vocal health is our priority!
Singing is highly intertwined with how we feel and perceive ourselves. Fortunately, learning to sing and build vocal confidence can help orient our own mental self-perceptions - this is where the true self-transformative work happens! Yes! Too many pop singers discount themselves as non-musicians and neglect that they are in fact - musicians! In our Haven Classes, you will learn to read music & apply relevant parts of music theory. For example, harmonic chord progressions can inform us how we can best approach singing a chord or melody part. Or how a certain chord colour can explain to us why a section of music sounds so different, crunchy or cool. Yes, in pop music! In our classes, you will also learn to read and interpret music and rhythm in simple and easy-to-understand ways. If my 9-yo students get it, you can too! Trust 👏
Yes, but as with all skills, it will take time! Vibrato (a steady oscillation in vocal pitch) is an advanced technique - not even dedicated opera singers have complete vocal control over their vibrato. Some singers take years to develop their vibrato. Others who may have grown up all their life listening to lots of singers with vibrato, seem to develop it sooner. Having an accurate aural picture of the sound first helps, so if you're someone who doesn't listen to a lot of vibrato singing (or desires to sing with it), you may not need to sing with vibrato for your vocal goals. What's for sure is - it is a healthy indicator of a free and efficient voice, and an irreplaceable vocal quality in the human voice for musical & vocal expression. All great singers who mastered their voices sang with vibrato, power, freedom, sensitivity & beauty.
Twice a year, we will hold a seasonal concert to celebrate the vocal growth of our students & singing community. These concerts will feature pop choir performances, acapella ensembles, acoustic sets and more. Start your vocal journey and perform alongside a community of like-minded singers with us!
The average untrained voice has a modal voice range of 1-1.5 octaves. With training, you usually want to bump that range to around 2-2.5 octaves. Some blessed 😭🙏 vocal cords get 3 or more octaves. Blessed or not - with our Haven & Studio Sessions, you'll be able to be put on a vocal progression plan to progressively increase your usable modal vocal range to its healthy upper and lower limit for your voice type (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass).
In addition to Haven Classes, our Studio Sessions (1hr, 2-4pax) allows for focused individual voice work on a weekday evening of your choice - once a month, up to 4 sessions a month! You can bring any song of your choice and work on your vocal technique directly with our friendly & patient lead vocal coach, choral conductor & acapella instructor Kester Tay. For partners or friends keen to sing duets, or small friend groups interested in your own song or acapella idea, you can also bring a song and work on it together in the Studio Sessions. In The Singing Haven, every singer will create their own Singer's Profile on their first Studio Session, which will contain a progressive singing plan for your individual voice. You'll use your Singer's Profile to visually track your progress towards achieving your vocal technique goals!
No - we don't really believe in certificates for singing & music. There is a paradigm we are seeking to break with the traditional music school structure in SG, and that is the over-valuation of music grading. In the process of singing, discovering & expressing your voice, we believe it is far more valuable for a singer to validate their musical growth and artistic progress internally. Were you able to move your audience in a live performance with your words & voice? Were able to feel, be, and comfortably express your authentic self on stage, or around others? Can you consistently replicate sounds that you really wanted your voice to be able to do? Tracking your vocal progression in your Singer's Profile, reviewing recent studio performances, asking yourself questions on your next step for improvement or even feeling good after achieving recent goals - we believe these progression metrics to be far more valuable for your singing journey.
Class fees are settled at the start of every month, before the first session. At the same time, every singer will receive a Google Form to submit their Sat attendance for the month - we reserve the right not to schedule makeups for missed lessons from your submitted attendance. We also wish to be keep lessons flexible for sudden illnesses - as long as your absence is communicated to us >24h in advance, we will be happy to make up for your missed Haven class slot with an additional Studio Session in future! For planned holiday breaks, you may just let us know when you'll be away. For group fairness, we reserve the right to remove any singer from performing in the semester concert if they are not adequately prepared, do not meet our attendance requirements, or do not meet our community guidelines.
