One of “lifers” from our Tucson, AZ trip was this pair of Black-tailed Gnatcatchers. The first few images are of the male, particularly noticeable by its dark cap. The last image was of the female hiding in the underbrush. Previously @kuipercreative shared that this tiny bird weighs about the same as a nickel - I find that so interesting!! Once you hear and learn what a Cactus Wren sounds like, they are hard to miss. In fact if many are nearby, like our VRBO had, they can be rather annoying with their grating sound! They are quite large, especially compared to the small House Wrens we frequently find in Michigan. Their normal range is the southern parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and the southwestern part of Texas and in to Mexico. With the recent rainy weather in the greater Tucson area, some of the valleys and hillsides are painted in vibrant yellow and orange flowers. We managed to observe and photograph 15 “lifers” including this Black-throated Sparrow during our recent visit in the northern Tucson area. With its distinctive markings like formal attire, this Sparrow is described as the most sharp looking sparrow. We enjoyed watching them throughout the week from our VRBO. Two years ago we vacationed in SE Arizona and encountered many new “lifers” including one sighting of a Gila Woodpecker which we thought was pretty special. Our recent trip to the Tucson area found many Gila Woodpeckers, including this male that was on site at our VRBO. It’s interesting how a few hours difference in range can find a significant difference in bird populations. Typically the Gila Woodpecker is seen on a cactus, and this one was normally on a nearby Saguaro cactus. The normal range of a Gila Woodpecker is southern Arizona and its primarily found in Mexico including the Baja Peninsula. Get outside, look around, protect our natural resources. We managed over the course of a few free days during our trip to Tucson, Arizona to encounter and observe 15 “lifers” including this Lesser Goldfinch. Not sure about the naming rights and history of this bird, but lesser just doesn’t seem right. In Michigan we regularly see the American Goldfinch, but this was a first for us and we enjoyed this Lesser Goldfinch just as much as its northern cousin. It is normally found in the southwestern states and most of Mexico, including Central America and the northern part of South America so capturing it with our cameras was a treat. During our recent trip to the Tucson area, we had a few days to hike and explore. We hiked at Catalina State Park and enjoyed the landscape, the flowers that were blooming, and a few butterflies too. Here in Michigan we don’t see the sun near as much, and the last few grey, rainy days make those AZ days so much better and longed for. These two butterflies brightened the day, the Buckeye which we see in Michigan, and the Empress Leilia was a first that is found in the Southwest. Since our Tucson, AZ trip was booked to attend a family wedding and visit other family nearby, we weren’t sure how much time we would have to go exploring. We managed, nonetheless, to encounter and observe 15 “lifers” including this Rufous-winged Sparrow. It was singing loudly, maybe trying to locate its mate? Although it’s not flashy or vibrantly colorful, it still sparked excitement as we located and photographed it. The bonus was that it was on the 5 acres of the VRBO we rented. Another interesting fact is this sparrow’s range is the southern third of Arizona and immediately south in Mexico. Its range is very small. Get outside, look around, protect our natural resources. You may have noticed today's #wildlifewednesday species crawling around the desert lately. They're hard to miss with their bold black and orange coloration. Master Blister Beetles (Lytta magister) are common in the Sonoran Desert this time of year, feeding on brittlebush and other flowers. As you might guess from the name and colors, these beetles are definitely a look, don't touch situation. When Blister Beetles feel threatened, they will excrete yellow blood from their joints as a defense mechanism. This blood contains cantharidin, a highly toxic irritant that can cause swelling and painful blisters. Today's #WildlifeWednesday is the adorable Lucy's Warbler! These tiny gray birds migrate to the mesquite bosques of the Southwest to breed and raise their young. They construct their nest in cavities and crevices, a unique behavior for warblers. Lucy's warblers love to eat all kinds of insects, and can often be seen foraging in large groups. Look for them in large patches of mesquite trees, preferably close to a water source. A beautiful boy! I haven’t seen a wild chuckwalla in almost a decade. I used to live near south mountain, so we got the carrot tails often, but where I am now is mostly creosote scrub, really flat, and they don’t grace this area with their presence. I saw this guy when I was on a walk. He was very calm. Definitely doesn’t encounter humans often. I haven’t been lucky enough to see another one of these beautiful lizards, but sure enough I’ll make time to go look for one eventually. This one I found hanging around in some yucca on an overcast monsoon season day in august (second photo shot in-situ). Next time I’m in the the Sky Islands of Arizona I’m definitely going to devote some time to finding a few more of them. Anguidae is a family of lizards that contains some really interesting groups, including our Western Alligator Lizards. The Elgaria genus may not be as noticeably vibrant like their Mexican cousins, or shockingly legless like Ophiosaurus, but I’ve gotta say it’s definitely one of my favourite genus in North America. Have you noticed a lot more small birds around? It might be today’s Wildlife Wednesday feature, the White-crowned Sparrow! These songbirds earned their name from their crisp black and white head stripes, resembling a crown. These tiny sparrows are true snowbirds, coming to Arizona and Mexico for the winter after the summer breeding season in Canada and the northern US. They prefer to travel in large flocks, eating seeds in grassland or brushy areas. I don't think I've ever seen a deer here with such a large rack! He wandered by as I was making lunch so I grabbed my phone to get some pics. He looked right at me as I opened the screen door for a clearer view. Unfortunately, as I slowly walked outside to try and get photos without the fence being in the way, he turned and disappeared into the desert.
