When I first held the original 1977 Star Wars masks in my hands, I noticed many irregularities and asymmetrical detailsโlike the tool marks on this aluminum piece of the Tusken Raider mask. Far from being flaws, these qualities help make the Sandpeople masks look real even on close inspection. Irregularities like these expressed Star Warsโ innovative โused universeโ design concept and contributed greatly to the believability of the cinematic world of Tatooine. * * * This organic quality of the masks and props was one of the first things that struck me about the Archives artifacts when I began working at Skywalker Ranch to research my Star Wars guidebooks back in 1996. Some people at the time expressed concern that the asymmetries and tool marks were embarrassing, but I believed that the original Star Wars artists like costume designer John Mollo and Set Decorator Roger Christian knew exactly what they were doing. As an archaeologist, I thought the tool marks and asymmetries greatly enriched the realism of the Star Wars masks and props they created. A real Tusken Raider mask would have been made out of scavenged metals and materials, and crafted by hand, not mass-produced with flawless perfection and perfect symmetry. The tool marks on this aluminum piece help make the mask look like it was laboriously produced in a faraway desert and used by a real tribe of Sandpeople. It looked to me like something I might have come across amongst my Berber and Arab friends when I was on archaeology projects in Egypt or Tunisia. I loved the fact that even when I held the Tusken Raider mask in my hands, it still felt like it truly came from a dangerous being in a galaxy far, far away. I originally planned to share photos like this on starwars.com, the website I ran at Skwalker Ranch, but I was ultimately forbidden to do so (thatโs another story). The Lars Homestead interior (Luke Skywalkerโs home) is actually a Berber troglodyte home in Matmata that has been built into the ground which allows the home to create its own natural air conditioning. From the ground surface, you can peer down into these homes like what Luke Skywalker did in Episode IV and you will see a large open courtyard in the center.
