The other day, I rode home on the subway and an unhoused man sat down across from me, clutching his Target shopping bag with one hand, a blunt yellow pencil in the other. I pretended not to notice that he had picked me as his 5 minute muse. Observers sitting next to him peered over at his work, looking up to smile at me while I rummaged around in my bag for my wallet. As we pulled into my station, he extended his offering to me, a simple sketch that captured my weariness (and my lashes!) I felt deeply moved in that moment that someone who had been invisible his whole life, hadn’t given up on seeing other people. We held eye contact for a few seconds, and I was humbled by the goodness I saw there and the realization that a person who has virtually nothing can give you everything.
