Question of the Month: How does GI use technology in its training and coaching methods? In short: as little as possible! Let us elaborate: We believe in human-centric leadership - or even more precisely, in Life-centric leadership. With this we mean leadership that takes into account and cares for all forms of Life versus inorganic matter. Life exists all over the Earth in air, water, and soil, with many ecosystems forming the biosphere. We develop leaders who maintain a holistic perspective on people, planet and purpose. We also know from experience that people resonate with other people, with nature and intangible energy. Where technology comes in handy for us is in the form of shared virtual workspaces, collaboration tools such as Trello, Skype or MS Teams, and of course as software we use to do our work. We benefit from social media and specific platforms to network, to communicate with our community, to create and dispatch surveys or our newsletter. We run webinars using technology and we host our proprietary leadership game “The Legend of the Teal Ocean” online. Last but not least, the internet is an endless source of knowledge and learning if used with scrutiny. In other words, technology offers great benefits, efficiencies and in fact enables a business like ours to even exist. Yet, we still see tech as a tool. This includes algorithms, avatars and AI. They are tools but they can never replace a human connection! At GAIA Insights, you will not find automated coach matching, no avatars moderating trainings nor AI-produced content. Just learned that the Myanmar Coastal Conservation Lab team is leading this training soon for youths in Myanmar, thanks to funding from the YSEALI Young Biodiversity Leaders program. This is based on one of the first systematic trainings we developed together in 2018, and was one of the pillars of our whole training program. Systems Thinking is an approach that I firmly believe in, and so it was truly rewarding back then to see how our participants came away from this training with new perspectives, mindsets, and tools that they could apply to pretty much any setting. Got invited by Tea to share my MDRT journey and how I transited my business from low ticket transactional business to a high ticket referable business. Tea was very generous in sharing his experience on agency building to me when we met for coffee. So when he invited me to do a sharing with his team, I agreed without hesitation. This sharing made me reflect on how much I've grown along my leadership journey. There was a period of time when I questioned if I'm suitable to build a team. You see, when I achieved my first MDRT, there were a couple of times others sought me out to learn. Back then, I didn't have a proper breakdown of my advisory process and I couldn't articulate my knowledge clearly. I felt I didn't really help the people who reached out. As someone who is driven by creating #sustainedimpact in peoples' lives, it bothered me. Einstein once said, "if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." If I want to help others and create meaningful impact, the ability to share with clarity is important. Between then and now, I've substantially invested in myself and worked on my processes to communicate these ideas with clarity. This year, I've had multiple positive tangible outcomes with advisors who reached out. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share with Tea's team as it's a further indication I'm in the right direction. There's no shame in having challenges because growth is not supposed to be linear. What's more important is the humility to learn and the willingness to evolve. If you are feeling stuck currently... Take heart you might be talking to a room full of people not too long in the future 😉.
Recently someone told me... "You are successful using these methods but not everyone might be as smart as you!" Does this sound familiar? What if I am not as talented? I had similar thoughts when I was still employed whenever I was asked to consider starting my own FA practice. Even after I made the decision to become self employed... My initial 6 months was filled with resistance and excuses (I felt they were justified reasons back then). I kept telling my mentor that his methods were not relevant to me... Because I didn't have clients as wealthy as his... Today, I've established myself as a principal advisor to many rising affluent clients. ‼️Here's the interesting part! 6 years ago when I was working as a banker, I had the opportunity to meet many HNW clients. I just didn't know how to do quality business with them. If you noticed, the key variable that changed from then till now was my skill set. I am still working with similar financial solutions and the one executing these actions is still the same 'smart' person. So why am I sharing this? Many people do not fulfill their potential because of their self limiting beliefs. You see, our minds are designed to protect us from pain. Hence it'll always persuade us to avoid risk and discomfort. Yet if this notion that success is determined by how smart one person is... Then the Janice in the bank would be labeled as 'not bright' and logically shouldn't do well even in a new environment. I'm a big believer that as long as we can see a possibility in our minds, we can make it happen in our lives. Ultimately, a 🪨 will always look like a rock as long as it is left raw and unpolished. But... it might be a hidden 💎! Gemstones are made under high pressure. Instead of letting our minds persuade us that we aren't smart enough... Perhaps it'll serve us better if we psyche our minds to have an UNCONDITIONAL willingness to be molded. Like Mark Cuban said, "don't let failure stop you. It doesn't matter how many times you fail. "Break the Chain" is an awareness campaign against ragging in higher educational institutions within Sri Lanka. The number of students who have left State Universities due to ragging has reached a few thousands already. Although attempts at curbing ragging within universities have been made through first hand action and awareness, it inherently entails severe backlash. For this purpose a webinar will be carried out on the 17th of June from 4-5.15pm by the team carrying out this particular project. Looking forward to the World Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28th May, the Rotaract club of IIT begun a campaign called the “Red Dot Challenge”. The Red Dot Challenge is a campaign inspired by @unicefindia, which aims to promote menstrual hygiene, collectively inspiring everyone to candidly talk about menstruation. As our very first Christmas project we are immensely proud to have been a part of the group of amazing individuals and interactors who organised the event. The weeks leading up to hosting such a large event were grueling, but as they say if there is no pain there can be no gain. And surely it can be unanimously agreed that this has been an amazing mix of talent, hardwork, dedication and a whole lot of love that has come together to bring this project and us to the point we are at today. The more that we choose not to talk about violence, the more we shy away from the issue, the more we lose. It can be so easy for people to ignore, as it often happens without any witnesses and it is sometimes easier not to get involved. Yet, by publicly speaking out against domestic violence, together we can change attitudes towards violence in the home and show that domestic violence not merely an unacceptable occurrence, but is a crime in itself. Our suggestions on helping bolster the #socialsector were met with sympathy and support, but we also noticed consistent refrain from multiple foundation representatives, who see #COVID19 as a necessary cull of ineffective and inefficient organizations from Hong Kong's overcrowed #socialimpact sector. That got us at FSI thinking. If the very organizations that fund the social impact space are skeptical and are actively hoping for organizations to fold, how can #socialimpactorganizations distinguish themselves and ensure a long-term future of #sustainedimpact? Each Wednesday we highlight the work of female entrepreneurs with whom we co-create, collaborate, and co-innovate. These are women with whom we have fun, learn, trust, push boundaries and who we respect and admire! Today we would like to highlight a Peruvian - German entrepreneur, Claudia van't Hullenaar @Claugiselle, founder of #SustainedImpact - Senior Sustainability Consultant of the @globalsustainabilitymovement and committee member of @eventsindustrycouncil. Claudia and I met one other in Nice in 2013, while she was still working for a big corporation. As fortune would have it, we bumped into each other during Imex Frankfurt in 2017. We rekindled our connection, both being also moms and entrepreneurs, with passion for sustainable values, mindfulness, meditation and creating a better planet for our progeny. In 2018, we collaborated together pro-bono program for the #TrillionTrees campaign of @plantfortheplanet which kicked off in the Principality of Monaco. It was an unique opportunity to collaborate for such an important goal with so many young people involved. Last year, I had the pleasure to enable & organize the first SEPC- Sustainable Event Professional Certificate - of the @eventsindustrycouncil in Europe with Claudia . We had great support of Monaco to welcome this event, especially because it is a destination committed to sustainability. We continue to looking for opportunities to collaborate and one of our next projects is to do a Climate Reality presentation addressing the climate crisis. Claudia is a dedicated advocate for the #SDGs. She believes that a consciousness based & human centered approach to what we do & how we things are an essential component for becoming a caring, resilient and thriving world. This accounts for business engagements, events, and in our personal lives. She loves people and the planet, nature, good food and great conversations, she, is a real connector – as she is always making valuable introductions.
