This is what collaboration and inspiration can look like. When I found out the boy plays soccer, I suggested the kids build a ⚽️ . Mathematically, a soccer ball is the same as a #truncatedicosahedron . It’s made of 12 pentagons, each of which is surrounded by 5 hexagons. You might think that the number of hexagons would be 12 •5, but each of the hexagons is shared by 3 pentagons, so the number of hexagons is actually 12•5/3=20. The kids worked together diligently constructing each hexagon from equilateral triangles. My original idea of having single colored hexagons wasn’t panning out because we were running out of certain colors. So the girl suggested bicolored and tricolored hexagons (shown shaded in the last slide). I attempted to freehand the one pictured here with mixed results. There are probably many things that inspired me to play with graph-theoretical circuits, but one of them is definitely my polyhedron constructs with linked, looped polygons. Linking disparate face structures together made me think of other ways of joining them, ultimately forming a single thread or tube that spans the entire polyhedron. Eulerian and Hamiltonian cycles provided the answer, but in their purest forms they lost some of the charm of the looped turns. So how about bringing those loops back to them? Also, while the original Käpälikkös are polygons, could we make a polyhedral one? I think we can. The buckyball makes a nice example of this for a couple of reasons. For starters, the turns are well under 90 degrees. If they get too much over 90, the loops get elongated too much to my tastes. The vertices are also 3-fold and nearly symmetric, so the loops always take the places of the missing edges. This was a somewhat unexpected benefit of the design — I wanted to place the crossings rather than loop centres at the original vertices, so the loops would fill the empty space on the outsides of turns. Of course, it might not work so nicely for other polyhedra. I'm also including an earlier version for comparison. I started testing this idea in the context of another demo, and fitting the new shape into existing slots meant some compromises. Math and coding mistakes can turn out quite inspirational and instructive. Here I was working on yet another way to draw polyhedra, and to test the setup I wanted to draw simple straight tubes between vertices for the common wireframe look. In this new scheme, I used a local orthonormal coordinate system based on the nearest vertices, with the edge being one of the axes. Unfortunately, I messed up the permutation of the XYZ axes, so instead of going forward from the local vertex to the other, this thing went, erm, sideways. I think the dodecahedron shows this idea the most clearly. Instead of the 3-fold vertices, there are 6-fold ones, and they are not joined by straight tubes. But as the original dodecahedral symmetry is preserved, we can see some pentagons and 5-pointed stars emerging from this mess. The icosidodecahedron and the truncated icosahedron (buckyball) are a bit harder to follow, but they show a similar effect where the larger polygons are turned into stars. I also find it interesting how the "great circles" (actually decagons) of the icosidodecahedron are turned into zig-zagging circles. There's probably nothing groundbreaking here, as people have found all sorts of nice shapes by placing suitably symmetric patterns on the faces of polytopes. In fact, this reminds me of some Islamic plane-tiling patterns. By adding another layer of spheres, sphairahedra can be turned into these thorny skeleton shapes. This was the idea I was aiming for when I started coding the first sphairahedra, after seeing works like these by some real-life sculptors. I wonder if they have a name — they remind me of empty seed pods or cones of some plants. As noted in the previous post, finding suitable positions and sizes for the circles hasn't been quite trivial. This is the compound of a truncated icosahedron and a dodecahedron. This form is closely related to the pentakis dodecahedron, the dual of the truncated icosahedron. Lines can be drawn from the corners of the dodecahedron through the midpoints of the penta-hexa edges of the truncated icosahedron. These lines intersect at the peak of the pentagonal pyramids that add onto the dodecahedron. This is how I constructed the pentakis dodecahedron for the Catalan dual series. In order to generalize my Archimedean-like spiral polyhedra into non-Platonic solids, I had to allow differently sized and shaped polyhedral faces. However, as an intermediate stage, I thought I'd make a buckyball with the pentagons left out. I think it turned out quite nice, e.g. in comparison with the traditional football style where the pentagons are black. This was also inspired by certain paper models of the fullerene, which likewise have empty spaces for the pentagons. I encountered one such model during my teacher training; the paper net is basically a hexagonal grid with some of the hexagons cut out. You then fold the hexagons around the hole so that two of them overlap, and the paper naturally bends into the roughly spherical form. This can be generalized into larger systems called Goldberg polyhedra. Of course, I soon finished the full system where the different polygon types are drawn similarly. It's usually easier to start with the Platonic solids, as there's only one set of parameters for the single type and size of polygon. But with different polygons, you need to think which parameters need to change per polygon type, and manage the logistics from Python to OpenGL shaders efficiently. So if you like Archimedes, this is for you: Archimedean spirals on an Archimedean solid.
