🌊🐚🐠 Did you know that sea cucumbers play a vital role in maintaining a healthy benthic environment? 🌊🐚🐠 📖 We're excited to feature a groundbreaking study in our upcoming academic paper edition! A recent study conducted by four marine science majors focused on the effects of microplastic pollution on sea cucumbers in Hawai‘i, U.S.A. 🌎 The study compared the concentration of microplastics in fecal matter of three different species of Holothuroid sea cucumbers to sediments nearby and without sea cucumber presence. Join the Board of Student Publications (Ke Kalahea, Hohonu, and Kanilehua) for 2 days full of learning about a diversity of new research, art forms, and journalist techniques, as well as experiences and knowledge. Speakers will present across the day in hourly increments with time for questions, and speakers range across a variety of topics including academic writing, marine science, and other natural sciences, written and talk journalism, painting, and sculpturing. BOSP’s publications have worked to create an event that features premier individuals from each of their respective fields. Speakers will tell about their current work and life path, and this can be an excellent time to network with new individuals, learn about tips and techniques from career paths, and simply learn about something new from both within your field or another field. While listening to speakers, UH Hilo students can enjoy free food from Liquid Life and selected giveaways, first-come first-served for each hourly presentation. 🎉 Congratulations to Erin Smith for winning Hohonu's Paper Submission Contest for 2023! 🎉 We are delighted to announce that Erin's paper "Challenging Representations of Pacific Islander Identity in Sharks in the Time of Saviors, by Kawai Washburn Strong" has been drawn at random as the winner. Her insightful and well-researched paper tackles a current issue in society and offers unique perspectives that we can all learn from. Erin is a dedicated learner who is pursuing her dreams despite already having an MBA from Florida State University in 1993. She has lived on the Big Island for 16 years and works as a Firm Administrator for a local accounting firm. In her free time, she enjoys swimming in the ocean and performing in community theater productions. Erin has been studying at UH Hilo since 2020.
