The city is our classroom! Just last week, our elementary students recently embarked on an inspiring art field trip to The Art Students League of New York. This iconic institution has been a nurturing ground for influential artists and movements since the 19th century 🎨 During the visit, our students explored the rich history and facilities of the League, and they expressed their creativity by drawing on their own canvases. We were also thrilled to have a very special guest join us — Andrew Drilon, a celebrated independent writer, artist, and comic book creator, and a proud alumnus of the League. Andrew shared his journey, inspirations, and even demonstrated his incredible sketching skills, signing artworks for our students. It was a truly uplifting experience for everyone involved. Our students left with their spirits soaring and brimming with creative ideas! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

A Night of Montessori Insights with Paula Lillard Preschlack 🙌 This Wednesday was a special day at Hopscotch Montessori! We were thrilled to welcome Montessori education expert Paula Lillard Preschlack. Starting the day by warmly greeting our parents and observing our students in action, Paula truly immersed herself in our vibrant community. In the evening, we hosted a dynamic workshop, not just for our parents but also for our youngest guests. We created a cozy Montessori space for babies, allowing parents to engage fully while their little ones played nearby. Paula brought Montessori education to life, illustrating its impact with real-life outcomes that highlight the development of independence, respect, growth, and courage in children. She adeptly connected the dots between Montessori practice and its profound effects on children, drawing on her personal experiences as a Montessori child, educator, principal, researcher, and parent. Paula addressed common parental concerns and questions with depth, using case studies and research based data to show how Montessori methods foster skills often overlooked by traditional educational models, which tend to focus more on memorization and testing. An emotional highlight was hearing from an alumnus who attended Paula’s school at age four who shared how her formative years in Montessori education played a pivotal role in shaping her adult life and career. Her testimony beautifully underscored the long-lasting benefits of Montessori education 💛 Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening, and a heartfelt thank you to Paula for sharing her profound studies and insights from her book “The Montessori Potential"! #hopscotchmontessorivia57 #paulalillardpreschlack

🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Language & Communication Development part 2 Many families embrace speaking different languages at home nowadays in the globalized world! While this enriches a child's cultural and linguistic experiences, it also raises questions about how best to support their language and communication development. Here are a few pieces of advice for parents navigating this exciting journey: • Consistency is key when it comes to language exposure. Children find it easier to understand a language when they consistently hear it from specific adults in certain locations. Establishing clear language patterns helps children develop a sense of order. • It is most beneficial when the language is presented authentically and fluently. Whether it's through songs, stories, or daily interactions, exposing them to genuine language settings helps their young minds absorb new words and sounds effortlessly. • Children may switch between two or more languages within a single sentence, known as "Code Switching." When a child engages in code switching, it's important for adults to attentively listen, observe their expressive patterns, foster their communication, and, most importantly, respond using only one language, keeping it simple. Because a child might not know the same words you know. And, of course, be patient! Children might take longer to express themselves in multiple languages 🗣️ While their understanding of language usually develops at a normal pace, expressing themselves might take more time as they process a larger amount of information. #hopscotchmontessorivia57

☕ What a delightful Spring Tea Party it was! Our students have been buzzing with excitement as they eagerly prepared for our much-anticipated celebration. Just a few days before the celebration, the kids got crafty and whipped up some gorgeous flower print art using recycled paper towel rolls. It was wonderful to see how engaged and immersed they were in the project. When the day finally came, our journey began with the task of creating delicious snacks for our celebration. The children have been practicing cutting, spreading, and arranging food. Not only did they create healthy and tasty sandwiches, desserts, and pastries, but they also developed essential motor skills and gained confidence in the kitchen 💪 It was a joyous celebration of spring, creativity, and learning. While Primary and Elementary students enjoyed tea, music, and dancing in their classrooms, our Toddlers had a fun picnic in the nearby park. The children had a blast but what's more important is that they picked up a treasure trove of skills along the way. From culinary prowess to artistic expression, they embraced every moment with enthusiasm and curiosity! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🎨 The City is our Classroom: Our Elementary Students' Visit to MoMA Last week, our elementary school students embarked on an exciting educational journey, stepping out of the classroom and into the world of modern art. Under the guidance of our beloved art teacher, Ms. Nina, the children have been delving into the works of impressionist and abstract artists. What better way to complement their studies than by experiencing the actual artworks firsthand? Located just around the corner from our school, MoMA served as an invaluable resource for artistic discovery, easily accessible to our students. Our tour began with an engaging introduction to Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway, Boogie-Woogie.” The students were thrilled to share their knowledge, eagerly raising their hands to discuss the artist and his techniques. They were fascinated to learn about Mondrian's inspiration from the bustling streets of New York City after his move from the Netherlands. The journey continued with a visit to Henri Matisse’s “The Swimming Pool.” In a room that brought Matisse's work to life, the students sat and visualized the artist pondering over his canvas in his living room, capturing his "happy place." Inspired by this, they too sketched their happy places, with imaginations running wild from serene beaches to vibrant parks and delightful meals 🖌 Our tour concluded with the iconic “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh, where the swirls of color seemed to dance vividly before our eyes. This trip not only enriched our students' understanding of art but also deepened their appreciation for the creative process and the stories behind each masterpiece. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a resource at our doorstep and look forward to more such outings that bring learning to life! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Language & Communication Development part 1 Did you know that from the moment they're born, babies have an incredible capacity for communication? It's not just about words; they use a whole range of cues to express themselves! In those early days, your little one communicates through movements, gazes, smiles, and cries. But here's the fascinating part – those cries aren't all the same! Each cry has its own quality, and if you pay close attention, you can start to recognize what they mean. As your baby grows, so does their communication toolkit! Around two months, they start to modulate their voice, and by three to four months, they're babbling away with vowels. Then come the consonants – "m", "n", "d" – around five to six months, adding more layers to their vocal repertoire. To support your baby's language and communication development in these early stages, take advantage of everyday activities like feeding, changing, bathing, and dressing to talk to your baby, describing actions and naming objects. Additionally, imitate your baby's sounds to encourage vocalization and show active listening 👂 So next time your little one makes a sound or gives you that adorable grin, remember – they're already on their way to becoming expert communicators! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Social - Emotional Development Part 2 As our children grow, so does the complexity of their social and emotional experiences. Building upon the foundational practices mentioned in the previous post, let's delve further into strategies to support their ongoing development in this crucial area! 🔸 Play Copycat: An infant's brain is like a sponge, they absorb everything in their environment. Engage in simple games where you mimic their sounds and movements. This not only encourages bonding but also teaches them about communication and social reciprocity. 🔹 Involve Your Baby in Daily Activities: From cooking to cleaning, every chore can be an opportunity for learning and connection. Model respectful interactions with others, showcasing the importance of kindness and empathy. Your little one is constantly observing and learning from your actions! 🔸 Arrange Playdates: Yes, even the youngest babies can benefit from social interactions! Setting up playdates, whether with fellow parents or in structured environments like a Montessori Nido class, provides valuable opportunities for your infant to explore social dynamics, practice turn-taking, and develop early friendships. Plus, it's a fantastic way for you to connect with other caregivers. In essence, every interaction, every cuddle, and every playdate contributes to your child’s social-emotional growth. Embrace these precious moments, and watch as your little one blossoms into a confident and compassionate individual! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

📍New York, New York, USA ~Obra: VIA 57 West ~Arq: BIG ~Año: 2016 Uf, BIG, qué obra. 🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Social - Emotional Development Part 1 As we navigate the incredible journey of parenthood, it's essential to recognize the significance of social-emotional development in our little ones. This integral aspect of a child's growth encompasses their ability to comprehend the emotions of others, regulate their feelings and behaviors, and form harmonious connections with both peers and adults. Creating an atmosphere rich in emotional well-being involves instilling feelings of trust, confidence, pride, friendship, and affection. As parents, we hold the key to nurturing our kids's social-emotional growth. Here are some simple yet effective ways you can support your child in this area: 1⃣ Respond to Your Baby’s Needs: At the core of social-emotional development lies the foundation of trust. Respond promptly to your baby's needs, reinforcing a sense of security and trust. 2⃣ Make Eye Contact: When interacting with your little one, get down to their eye level. Establishing eye contact fosters a deeper connection and enhances the communication between you and your child. 3⃣ Engage in Conversation: Talk to your baby! Engage in babble, allowing pauses for them to respond. This not only supports language development but also promotes a strong emotional connection. Fostering social-emotional development in children is a continuous and rewarding journey. 💕 Filled with love, wrapped in care at Hopscotch Montessori! During our community circle, we pondered, "How do you show love to your family or friends every day?" The responses were heartwarming. The responses were heartwarming: from "I say 'I love you' to my mom and dad“ to "I give my friends big hugs" and even "I finish my lunch!” For our students, Valentine's Day was more than just a celebration; it was a beautiful reminder of the power of friendship and compassion. Toddlers discovered that love extends beyond words, learning to express it through gestures like sign language and songs. Meanwhile, our Primary students delved into creative expression with Valentine crafts, spreading love and kindness through art. And our Elementary students strengthened their bonds by writing heartfelt "thank you" letters to each other, reinforcing the power of appreciation and connection 😌 At Hopscotch Montessori, every day is a reminder that love is not just a feeling but also a beautiful action that we share with one another! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Challenging Behavior Part 3 In the whirlwind of parenting, it's easy to get caught up trying to understand your child's behavior. We’ve covered the effects of our own conduct and even the environment, but every now and then, the root of the changes lies right there within your child! Start by asking yourself if your child's basic needs are met. Are they hungry, tired, or possibly getting sick? Ensuring they have a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and proper healthcare can significantly impact their behavior. Offering choices within acceptable limits can also empower them and reduce power struggles. Simple decisions like what to wear or which snack to have make a positive impact. Children go through various developmental stages, including growth spurts that may affect their mood. It's essential to recognize that their emotional and cognitive development plays a crucial role in shaping their reactions and responses. Understanding and acknowledging these natural changes can help you navigate through challenging moments with patience! And don't forget – you're not alone 🙏 Reach out to friends, family, or support groups when you need assistance or a fresh perspective. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🔍 How does our Elementary Residency support the Environmental Entrepreneurship curriculum? When we say “Economics” we are guiding students towards connecting the dots between maintaining a healthy environment (both personal and global) and the entrepreneurial spirit exhibited during our trips. Economics is historically “a way to run a household” and our students learn everything is interconnected - social relationships, environment, how we organize our time, plan for the day, each activity, and how we work together. In our latest trip to the Residency, we engaged in entrepreneurial endeavors, cooking our own meals and understanding the significance of sustainable living. The children seamlessly integrated practical life skills with a deepened sense of responsibility. The quiet, yet buzzing, visit to the beehives, the resilient winter vegetables standing strong in the snow, and the commitment to safeguarding the environment all underscored the interconnectedness of life — an essential aspect of Montessori education 🙏 Our overnight adventures are more than just trips; they are a gateway to exploration, self-discovery, and meaningful connections with the world around us. Through the lens of the Montessori philosophy, the Residency extends the boundaries of our classroom into the great outdoors, allowing our students to absorb the invaluable lessons nature had to offer! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🧧 Lunar New Year at Hopscotch! In the spirit of fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, we celebrated Lunar New Year with great enthusiasm. This vibrant cultural holiday holds great significance for many of our students and their families, offering us all a chance to come together and learn. In our Primary classrooms, students embarked on an exciting exploration of the Asian continent. From crafting lanterns to delving into math with ancient Chinese coins, and even immersing themselves in the art of the tea ceremony, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. Sipping tea with friends quickly became a cherished classroom ritual! Meanwhile, our Toddler students engaged in delightful craft activities while learning about the twelve zodiac animals of the Lunar Zodiac. They also had the opportunity to explore the rich flavors of Asian cuisine by cooking up a batch of mouthwatering “Mango Sticky Rice”. Not to be outdone, our Elementary students embraced the art of calligraphy and received heartfelt red envelopes from our teachers, ushering in good fortune for the Year of the Dragon 🐉 We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents who generously shared their Lunar New Year traditions with us. Together, we created unforgettable memories and provided our students with a remarkable opportunity to broaden their cultural awareness and appreciation. #hopscotchmontessorivia57

In our Montessori classrooms, from the primary to the elementary levels, we witness the transformative power of tools like the Peace Rose🌹 and the Talking Stick🪄 in nurturing essential skills like turn-taking, empathy, and effective communication, all integral to our peace education curriculum. Whether it's Peace Rose or Talking Stick, these tools serve a vital purpose: they instantly de-escalate tense situations and ensure that every voice is heard. When a child holds it, they have the floor to share their perspective and emotions, passing it on to the next child in turn. Just the other day, we had a beautiful example of this in action. Two students found themselves in a disagreement, both feeling upset. Just when the teacher about to intervene, one of the children suggested using the Talking Stick. 👦"I felt sad when you talked to me like that," one child expressed. 👧"I felt sad too when you were speaking loudly," said the other. 👦"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you," 👧"It's okay. I don't want you to be sad too. Are you okay?" With the rest of the children quietly observing, these two students navigated their emotions and resolved their conflict with respect and understanding- one example of peaceful and constructive communication skills in our students. #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🙋‍♀️ Montessori Parent. Challenging Behavior Part 2 Now that we've taken a moment to consider the environment and ensure its impact, let's delve into the second crucial factor that can influence a baby's behavior – our own actions. There are instances when a child's undesirable behavior is intertwined with our conduct or perceptions. Therefore, it can be beneficial to reflect on how we behave and react in specific circumstances. Ask yourself: Is this behavior genuinely problematic? Are my expectations suitable for my child's age and stage of development? How does my reaction contribute to the behavior? Are my responses influenced by my own childhood experiences? Reflecting on these questions may provide valuable insights into the dynamics between your actions and your baby's behavior. Take a moment to think about your own pace – could we be unintentionally provoking challenging behaviors by forgetting how big we are and how little they are? You can always share your feelings with your child while also recognizing and validating their emotions. This creates a nurturing environment where open communication is encouraged, creating a stronger bond between you and your little one. As we've emphasized before, all behavior is communication 🙌 Just as we avoid passing judgment on kids, we shouldn't be overly critical of ourselves. Instead, employ reflection and observation to approach situations more objectively and foster a positive and supportive environment for both yourself and your child! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🧘‍♀️ How is mindfulness achieved through Peace Education in our Elementary program? Our elementary program focuses on students’ emotional development, conflict resolution skills, and well-being. In this series of posts, we will take you through our students' day to show you how Peace Education is woven into every aspect of their school lives and beyond! We kickstart mornings with yoga and meditation, setting the stage for a day centered on mindfulness. The classrooms offer ample space for students to develop their flexibility and concentration. Daily yoga has numerous benefits for children that extend beyond just physical fitness 💪 • Enhances well-being: It can aid in reducing stress and anxiety while promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. It teaches children to be present in the moment, fostering self-awareness. • Boosts cognitive functions and self-esteem: A growing body of research has already shown that practicing yoga can help children improve their concentration and focus, benefiting their academic performance. Through mastering new poses and techniques, they also build confidence in their abilities. • Develops emotional regulation: Yoga provides children with a tool to manage their emotions and cultivate a peaceful mindset. All in all, it's a fantastic way for our students to stay active, healthy, and balanced! Breathing meditation complements this morning ritual, ensuring children are attuned to a day full of discovery. #hopscotchmontessorivia57

The turnout for our recent Silent Journey event exceeded expectations, with numerous families eagerly seeking insights into the inner workings of a Montessori classroom ✨ They had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment where their children engage in daily learning experiences. Families began by reminiscing and reflecting on their childhood experiences, aligning with the age of their children. We then delved into the examination of Montessori materials, engaging in meaningful discussions, and participating in the captivating Peace Rose presentation. The highlight of the event occurred organically when "peer learning" took place among parents. Just like in a real Montessori classroom, when one parent appeared puzzled and in need of assistance with the materials, others readily stepped in to help. The essence of the Montessori classroom and the school's identity sometimes doesn't require verbalization; it simply needs to be experienced :) Some parents shared that during their "discovery," they contemplated how their own children might respond—whether receiving lessons from the teacher, seeking help, or exploring the materials. By immersing themselves in their kids' world, parents developed a profound understanding and appreciation for their children's learning, as well as a newfound respect for teachers. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents and the dedicated team of Hopscotch Montessori for making this event truly exceptional 🙌 #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🙋‍♀️ Montessori parent. Challenging Behaviour Part 1 In the journey of raising a child, all parents inevitably encounter moments of challenging behavior. In this post we will explore a Montessori perspective on understanding and addressing a challenging behaviour by examining the first key area: the environment! Montessori education emphasizes the importance of a well-organized and thoughtfully arranged space. If your child seems uninterested in certain toys or activities, it might be worth considering whether there's an overload of options. Can they easily reach and engage with these items independently? Are materials aligned with your child's current developmental stage and interests? These are factors to take into account, as tweaking the environment can sometimes bring about positive changes in behaviour 👍 When considering the concept of space, it's also crucial to provide children with a safe environment that encourages play, learning, creativity, independence, and a strong sense of self. They should feel free to move around, touch things, and explore with confidence, understanding that this space is designed for them, and they won't be reprimanded or told 'no.' At the end of the day, all behavior is a way of communicating, and there are no perfect solutions. What works for one kid might not work for another, yet observing your child’s reactions to the environment can go a long way! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🌟 Montessori Parent. Developing Bedtime Routine Part 2 Last time we discussed how establishing a bedtime routine can significantly impact a child's development and well-being. Now, let's delve into how to go about implementing it! For a start, have a conversation with your child about the upcoming changes. The idea is not to impose these changes on them but to involve them in the process. We’re not doing things to them, we’re doing things with them. And make sure the sleeping area remains consistent. It will help your baby to create a clear association between that space and rest. Since kids naturally need some rest after being active, think about organizing activities around your child’s nap or bedtime. During the actual process of sleep (post-cuddles), avoid making eye contact. Eye contact can be quite stimulating, so aim to keep the environment as dull as possible, sending the message that it's time to rest. Remember, establishing routines takes time. Give it at least a week to see how it goes, and keep track of any positive aspects or areas for improvement 💪 If things don't progress as quickly as you anticipated, don't get discouraged. Managing change, even for adults, can be challenging! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

👋 We decided to start sharing Montessori tips and lifehacks for babies up to age 2 from our educators! In this rubric, we will talk about organizing the home environment, routines, hygiene, and child development to make parents' lives easier. Follow us, and it will be interesting :) Today, we will talk about bedtime routine development. Children, as young as infants, have a sense of order. Creating a routine can make a difference in their development and well-being. There's no right or wrong routine. It's more about keeping things in the same predictable order. For example, your day can begin with a gentle wake-up, a diaper change, and a feeding. Then comes a time for sensory play and movement, when you balance between interacting with your child and allowing them independent exploration. And after another diaper change, you create a calm environment for them to nap. Fostering independence in sleep is crucial 💤 While it's natural to comfort your child, allowing them to learn to fall asleep independently can be beneficial. If they’re in your arms when falling asleep and suddenly wake up, it can be shocking that you are no longer there. You may also integrate soft music or white noise into your bedtime routine to signal that it's time for sleep! As the day winds down, consider incorporating a calming bath and massage into your evening routine. Share a moment with books, check for a dry diaper, indulge in cuddle time, and bid your little one a peaceful goodnight. Continuation in a future post after the holidays! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

A glimpse into our Elementary Winter Celebration ⛄ The festive spirit at our school reached new heights as students and families gathered for a heartwarming Winter Celebration. The event was a magical blend of creativity, unity, and the joy of the holiday season! The classrooms turned into fun creative zones. Children made gorgeous lanterns, each uniquely designed with glitter, paint, and a sprinkle of holiday magic. In another corner, the scent of gingerbread filled the air as children worked together to decorate their very own gingerbread houses. One of the highlights of the celebration was making the World Map! Families brought their cultural pride to the forefront by pinning their origins on a world map. One talented dad stole the show by improvising on the piano! From classic Christmas tunes to a heartwarming "Jingle Bells" in Latvian, the students celebrated the season in a harmonious blend of languages 💛 It was a beautiful sight to witness as students proudly showed off their diverse backgrounds. Our Winter Celebration truly exemplified the spirit of the season, reminding everyone that the magic of winter is even more enchanting when shared with friends from around the world! #hopscotchmontessorivia57

💛 What an enchanting day we had at our Winter Charity Fair! Our school was transformed into a winter wonderland, filled with the laughter and joy of our little ones and their families. The students were excited about this event, getting creative and making all sorts of crafts for the fair. They made hot chocolate reindeer, sustainable plant pods, and charming wooden and fiber ornaments. They even put together little bags of granola that they made during the granola-making meditation master class that brought everyone together. The happiness on the kids' faces as they assembled items for the charity sale made it an incredibly enjoyable experience! This year, we aim to continue supporting our campus in Kyiv, Ukraine. We understand the significance of guiding our kids, acknowledging that every step they take matters and every bit of assistance they provide is meaningful. With an understanding of what charity is and why we engage in it, our students were very proud of themselves for helping other children! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at this event 🙏 All the funds raised will provide local children with education and valuable resources to nurture their growth. Our thoughts and hopes are with Ukraine and our Kyiv campus, where this beautiful charity tradition originated. #hopscotchmontessorivia57

🌍 An Exciting Journey Through Africa! Our Culture Fair is a cherished tradition that takes place a couple of times a year, allowing our students to explore and celebrate the beauty of various cultures around the world. This time, the spotlight was on Africa! Each student chose a specific African country, delved into its culture, and presented their findings through creative projects. They were showcasing projects that explored everything from traditional clothing to language, food, and more! For instance, one of the students whose project was centered around Egypt had a unique ruler stencil with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, allowing everyone to write their names in this fascinating script 🔍 Children and parents also joined in singing and dancing to traditional songs. It was a blast for everyone, and we all had a great time while learning something new. Exposing children to diverse cultures is an essential part of their education. It fosters empathy, understanding, and a sense of global citizenship. By celebrating the uniqueness of each culture, we teach our students to appreciate differences, cultivate open-mindedness, and embrace the beauty of a world where every individual contributes to the global tapestry. #hopscotchmontessorivia57
