New series are always a bit of an emotional ride… I am asked often about my inspiration and it’s really very simple… I am a frustrated wordsmith. I love to write and play with how a word can dangle and teeter for sublime impact. The process of titles has always been part of the process I enjoy most… I suspect that most all of my work could covey very different ideas based on said titles… that theory that by naming a goal, for instance, has more chance to become if we say it aloud… or declaring an issue we are struggling with is diminished if we give it voice. More reflections of an artist: More rumination’s of the story in art…the techniques are foundations for critique and criticism of artwork, but tremendous technical abilities are rested upon stories. As I have said before, my work is autobiographical and rarely can I step away from that influence when creating. When life meets fears: no doubt everyone has had a dream that was “too” real or lingered longer than was comfortable. To say that is how I feel currently is an understatement… too many of those dreams to recount recently, but there is no shaking the intense dread that lingers… often my artwork is reflective of mood. Mood can be expressed with many devices… I use line… fractured line, or a singular with imperfect line to express dread or grief… somber mood. Marks with passion and little regard for placement can also set mood… a balance when making marks must be managed as to not go too far… again mood is about hinting and whisper… conversations with echos, and in my case, fear… the lone essence and relegated to being in the past. The wonder of texture: As a language all its own, texture speaks in ways that words fail me. Answering the “why” make art: for me that why is more of another question…what is home? I grew up never really have that “home” that most others did. We moved so many times before I was even 10 years old that the addresses are a blur. Financial insecurity most often the reason for so many upheavals. While I did not always have the ideal home and in some cases not even living in a home together with my whole family… I could conjure up the “ideal home”. A place that was grounded and permanent with the family that belonged in that permanence. Being nomadic by choice, I’m sure is adventurous, but having to move from one place and another…being “taken in” on occasion because there is not another option is no adventure. It creates a permanent anxiety regarding security. It wasn’t until I married that I felt that permanence… home being where those you loved most belonged. Where being who you are is comfortable and secure. A tangible base to return to under any circumstance… knowing that your being is part of the whole foundation of “home”. Yes, it is a place and so much more… it’s the place my girls will take in their hearts to college, the place we think of with Turkey in the table, the place that our Christmas tree stood, the place where we walked for hours through teething pain, the place where we buried our pets… it is a place… and so much more than an address. #poeticart #poeticwatercolor #poeticlandscape #etherealart #abstractlandscape #mixedmedia #mixedmediaart #vickiclarksonwatercolors #dmvartist #marylandartist
Reflections of an artist: Events take place that push you back and turn your mind to what has been… what was… what you once were. When I look back at work that I was most connected with it brings me to a place that is still coursing through my being. An intangible essence of light and day amidst gray and nearly gone. A blue that is infused with elements other worldly…reference to the life that grows in singlular form but clusters to thrive with familiar likeness…the single is not intended nor desired…and resistant to being alone. Expressing what is not known: The most essential of the expression within creating is allowing the mood to have its secrets. To see so much and to not see equally as much… or to feel what is not seen. I create from a personal story perspective and that can be both cathartic and painful… living the experience and also pouring it out onto canvas is a raw and vulnerable action. I also find that the work speaks to me in the process and gives clues to what may be around the corner… the work knowing more than I do.
