A day off today but far from a rest day. I cycled just over 100km with a few steep climbs whilst out watching some of The Fred Whitton Sportive. Meet Henry, Sasha & Tilly, two boisterous sister Labradors, and a reserved Sproodle (Springer x Poodle). We met up today for a beach photo session, which ended up being 5 hours of sandy, wet cuddles, laughter, and chaotic fun. Now, let me talk you through this image. I had an idea with the three of them, to each lay on one step each, in a row. Now, I may have been a bit optimistic with this one, but I have to commend Billie and Chris' willingness to try and achieve what we thought was impossible. It took several attempts and a heck of a lot of patience to get them all laying down on each step in a perfect line, but it happened... the next challenge, getting them all to look in the same direction at the same time, this was a failure. When one or two of them looked, the other would look away. Luckily, I took enough photos in this area to be able to use 3 images where they all looked and stitched them together - the other images in this post are what was used. The journey up Fleetwith Pike was interesting, I have to say. When I first laid my eyes on it , back in January, I thought it looked very inviting. When I saw it again before the climb, I wasn't so sure anymore ๐คฃ. I could only see the first part of the path and nothing further. So be prepared for a bit of a vertical scramble. All in all, I enjoyed it, and I was happy this wasn't my way down ๐ ๐ ฟ๏ธ The closest parking is the Gatesgarth Car Park. ยฃ4 if I remember correctly. There is a cafe just opposite, with outdoor sitting. We parked at National Trust Buttermere Car Park because I wanted to also do a loop around the lake. ๐ซ Food wise, I definitely recommend the Syke Farm Tea Room #sykefarmtearoom. The George Fisher Espresso Round (the Tea Round's little brother) has been on my to-do list for a while and we definitely chose a great day for it! ๐ Starting and finishing at the George Fisher shop in Keswick, the Espresso Round is a half-marathon circular hike (or fell run) taking in the summits of Catbells, Rowling End, Causey Pike and Barrow. โฐ๏ธ When I hiked the Tea Round (31 miles, 10 summits and 12000ft elevation gain) last Summer I said I felt I had found the absolute limit of my ability and that I would never do it again. The same rings true today haha but I would DEFINITELY repeat the Espresso. The Full Helvellyn Range๐ The second in this series of #sarahswainwrights is a traverse of the entire Helvellyn range taking in 9 Wainwrights starting at Dollywaggon Pike and ending on Clough Head. โฐ๏ธ I have walked this route twice, once in Winter conditions, and started both times at Dunmail Raise, utilising buses to/from Keswick to get to the start and get back home at the end of the day. I have included both route maps so you can see which one works for you! The path from Dunmail Raise takes you up alongside Raise Beck to Grisedale Tarn before heading up to the first fell of the day, Dollywaggon Pike. When you reach Clough Head you have a few options for descent and this will be determined by whether you have travelled by bus or car (or two cars - one parked at the start and one at the finish point). You can head straight off the back past White Pike and towards Threlkeld. You can also double back and descend behind Calfhow Pike to Fornside and head back to the A591 from there. You can also descend via Wanthwaite Bank. (NB. The X4/X5 buses service Threlkeld. Buses are currently only ยฃ2 for any single journey.
