Beautiful wild foods right out here in our backyard! Bugs, yeah they’re out! But so are the ramps! We harvested as ethically as possible, only taking half the patch at the most, more like one third. Cutting the bulb/roots off to stay in the ground to multiply for next year. Putting our thanks back into the dirt with each ramp we pulled. I am the seventh generation and my children are the eighth, I represent the generations by having eight wild green onions suspended by braids and all connected together by the roots. I come from a background of endurance and silent wounds, the wild onion bulbs and stocks are visibly scarred, cut, cracked, healing and regrowing. The two onions in the center represent the eighth generation, my children, who are growing and twisting together unscathed. I use symbols of wild green onions because growing up I was told that wild onions outside of natural germination were brought to Oklahoma by Indigenous people on the trail of tears during the removal era. Wild green onions are often deemed as weeds in western society when it comes to maintaining yards rejecting the food sovereignty potential. This leads to harsh removal of wild onions from the land, but usually this removal is unsuccessful since once the bulb’s roots are firmly planted, it will thrive. I use this perennial act of resistance as a parallel to my family and ancestors’ resilience since we once were removed from the land, and still continue to thrive year after year despite the harsh conditions we’ve had to endure. Welcome to early Summer🌻 The wildflowers have taken hold! Around the yard and the wooded area, we have flowers everywhere. A previous owner planted these beautiful Iris that arrive each May💜 These are blooms just big enough to fit in the palm of my hand. The hot pink flowers you see are Azaleas that are on a very large bush. It has waxy green leaves and a fragrant flower. The prickly looking purple flowers are a type of wild onion, the Persian or Dutch onion. Our neighbors have a pale purple lilac that blooms after our darker ones have faded. And by now, our Lily of the Valley has also faded. Revisited our Frankston South project today for some garden maintenance and am thrilled at the amount of growth from the plants which were installed in February. One of my all time faves - Bulbine bulbosa - Bulbine Lily - has filled in this section so well! It has been planted en masse in this sandy soil - however, the soil was amended with organic matter (compost and seamungus) to help with moisture retention and nutrient availability. Flowering can be from later summer to late spring but mines at home flower all year round. This is great for winter as it can brighten up areas of the garden with its cheerful yellow flowers. It should colonize this area well as it self seeds readily. Known as wild onion or native leek, the seeds, roots and below ground corms are edible (leaves are not). Suitable to various soil types from sandy loam, loamy, clay loam to average poor soil. It can die off/go dormant in dry periods This is when the corm beneath is ready for harvest. It reshoot readily if there is adequate watering. It prefers a full sun-part sun position. It's been a successful spring foraging so far this year. Plenty of morels (blacks and greys) and lots of wild ramps. @dogriverhowler and I have created some wonderful dinners out of our forest finds such as, whitefish baked in smoked butter, ramp leaves, and lemon, then topped with a white wine, ramp, and lemon sauce (the fish was the best I've ever had!!), with pan fried morels, orzo, and sautéed summer squash and zucchini on the side. Another post of Wild Garlic/Meadow Garlic, Wild Onion, Allium canadense— a strong smelling (when crushed), very tasty, amazingly versatile, overly abundant plant growing across the creek in the little forest behind our house. Like last spring, it’s growing amongst young poison oak and poison ivy, so thankfully I’m not one who’s ever had any issues with those beautiful baddies. Gorgeous Jack-in-the-pulpits are blooming back there again also, right in the mix of the previously mentioned plants. All so different yet living in harmony, it appears. Who knows what conversations happen when I’m not back there though, eh? Note: I’m not a Ramps/Wild Leeks, Allium tricoccum snob. (Seems to be a thing people are accused of being.) wild onions | midweek, I pulled all of the wild onions that were growing in one of our smaller garden beds: rinsing them, wrapping them in my now-allocated "onion towel." it wasn't until yesterday that I processed them, starting to prep them for future use. some topped our baked potatoes, others were made into a compound butter, I separated the dark green tops for a future homemade stock, while leaving others relatively whole for grilling or broiling. but there was one more thing made with them... veggie cream cheese! Wild Onion. Spring foraging is in full swing Today I focused solely on wild onions. After about 45 minutes of foraging it became easy to spot exactly where they grow, before actually seeing them. It was amazing how nature actually tells us exactly where it will provide if you learn how to read it. Harmonize, tap into your intuition and reap the benefits. The top leaves are like chives and middle and bottom are like scallions. These ones have a very earthy, ‘dirt like’ note along but also that familiar pungent garlic/onion aroma. There’s also a pleasant mineral like aroma reminiscent of warm wet stone after a rain. Some of these will get chopped and dried, others used fresh and the rest will be fermented (Ala cabbage or pickles). Get down on it. #wildonion #foraging #foragedfood #forage #foraged #foodislife

Wild onion sourdough everything bagels 150g active sourdough starter 250g lukewarm water 24g sugar 500g flour 9g salt 20g honey (water bath) - mix ingredients except honey, salt last. Cover with damp towel and proof 1 hour. - Punch down dough and form smooth ball. Bulk ferment for 10-12 hours or until doubled in size. - Form 8 balls and allow to relax 10-15 minutes - Line sheet tray with lightly oiled parchment. - Pierce balls through the middle and roll out with fingers - Proof bagels for 30 minutes. - Bring pot of water with honey to a boil. Carefully cook each bagel on each side until it floats. I had a chance to harvest some wild onions today. I went back to my favorite spot and found these beauties! Wild onions make a wonderful soup base. Often called Iroquois soup, wild onion soup, maybe Eastern Woodlands based, but recipes can be found in Algonquin culture and throughout the Oklahoma tribes. Recipes can vary, and the pelurpose is about sharing and community more than specific ingredients. We like to have dumplings and potatoes in ours, but some recipes call for fish and various greens. It's is a good medicine to forage for your spring meal even if it isn't very far from your home.
