DAY TOURING in Tuscany! 🎉🧑🏼🍳🍷 When our sweet friend Nina @theglobetrottingaccountant wanted to plan a visit with her family we were over the moon! Had a few crackerjack masterclasses in the last month here at Uncle Dan’s in Brighton. First we had Andrew Gardiner from Fontanafredda and looked at wines from Tambolini, Le Vigne De Zamo and Fontanafredda including the superb 2016 Barolo Riserva. Last night was global pinot noir benchmarking. This included Gentle Folk ‘Scary Gully’ 2022, Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge 2021, Thörle ‘Saulheim’ Spätburgunder 2020, Paringa Estate ‘The Paringa’ 2020, Willakenzie Estate Willamette Valley 2018, Felton Road ‘Block 5’ 2022 and the Domaine de la Pousse d’Or Chambolle Musigny ‘Les Charmes’ 2017. Fair to say the US wine and German wine really surprised people with the quality. The Felton Road was an absolute banger, and the Chambolle was sleek, silky and simply superb. What a treat! @oliverstaranga in the middle of McLaren Vale for our final tasting experience on Day 8 at the 185 year 100 hectare family property producing small batch hand crafted wines including the relatively new Mencia. Sixth generation custodian and winemaker @corrinaattaranga is rightly known as the Queen of Fiano based on our tasting, and the Vermentino was very good also( #7). This was part of “The Greats Tasting “( #3) which included the 2022 RW Grenache beside the 2023 Grenache( #4) and the 2020 and 2014 HJ Shiraz alongside the 2021 Shiraz( #5&6). Over the last two nights it has been wonderful to catch up with @bernies_art_page and @samkurtzwm. Last night we got together @1918bistroandgrill where we enjoyed 5 wonderful wines( #1). The Richmond Grove Limited Release Watervale Vineyards Riesling is likely to have been made by the late and great master of Riesling, John Vickery. It was still fresh and full of flavour. As was the 2005 Jacob’s Creek Padthaway Shiraz Limited Release 35 th Anniversary wine made by Sam. I have included the information on the back label( #3) because it sums up the wine and it was true to say that it would improve with age and enjoyed for up to 20 years if cellared correctly. Our wines included the iconic Nine Popes GSM by @charlesmeltonwines. We also had the opportunity to experience the superb Barossa Valley @rojomoma_wine Red Art wines handcrafted by Sam and true to their single vineyard origins. Last night there were the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon & their premium Raj’s Pick Shiraz named after their son @rajkurtzkaeding who was with us. The previous evening our wines included the 2005( #7, @vintnersbarossa) and the new release 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon( #6). The dishes at each venue were delicious. We are smiling because Day 6 provided the opportunity to visit the state-of -art Treasury Wine Estates Winery and Packaging Centre opened in 2022 with the capacity to produce more than 100 million litres of wine a year. An additional reason for our smiles was that we were able to stand beside barrels of a future @penfolds St Henri Shiraz.
