#tigdh Highlights for May 1st... 1981 / Hampton - Scorching Let it Grow > Deal combo to close first set. Top-shelf Althea. Jer’s solo at the 7 minute mark tears open the stars and gives us a glimpse of a choir of angels, bending their ears to hear the magic. Stranger > Franklin’s gets the second set treatment and are platforms for boogie moods and hot Garcia shreds. At the beginning of the jam in Stranger Jerry seems to be having some issues with the volume of his guitar but then he overcompensates resulting in a burst of feedback. It’s a priceless moment that energizes the crowd and fuels Jerry to really stretch the jam out. 1980 / Greensboro - Just as Estimated Prophet seems ready to crack open, Weir abruptly brings it back to the bridge chords (California jam), which Garcia flips with a graceful sleight-of-hand into Uncle John’s Band which the band had just brought back into rotation in December 1979. Very unique! 1977 / Palladium - Both Morning Dew and Comes a Time were played only 5 times in 1977 and all of the versions are incredible. This version of Comes a Time was the first one of the year. It is stunning and sensitive, as powerful and beautiful as Dead ballads get. The solos burn like ice. The coda, almost a waltz, flows beautifully back into the ether of Playin’ Reprise. Brokedown Palace, another much-loved ballad, was played only 5 times in 1977. This one is tender and poignant. Perfect tempo, great harmonies, and a pretty solo from Jerry. Nice polymoog switch by Keith.
