Day 31, #1RAD. Think I said last night most of all that was on my mind reflecting on how this month has been for me. Positive things. I had a hard time deciding what to do tonight, nothing really was coming to me I guess because it was too clouded in my brain. It felt like something important or great or impressive should be done for the last day. But as we know, the important thing is just to do. So I played the first song I ever played in public, I was in 9th grade doing a report that was definitely *not* on folk songs or John Denver 🤷🏻♀️ but I can’t remotely remember what it was about. When I did this challenge last year my mental health was in a really bad place (damn you chronic depression, anxiety disorder, and stress from the world being on fire) and I never really set any specific goals so getting through the challenge was really hard. Obviously the world is still on fire and these mental health conditions have always been and always will be there, but going into the challenge this year with some actual goals and a better handle on managing my symptoms was a huge help. I feel like I went in with a better mindset, made some progress, and even learned a few new tricks because I found myself looking forward to practicing as opposed to viewing it as a chore. So thank you @sheshreds_media for hosting this challenge and reminding me why I love music so much. I'll be taking a few days off of posting on my Instagram feed and will be back with some sneak peeks of my next project with @jumpforgioia next week! Day 30 of #1RAD. Feels weird wrapping this up. This one is called two minutes to worry, because I wrote it within 2 minutes of picking up the guitar tonight, I’ve only got a couple minutes to post before midnight, and because tomorrow I have to get a stupid ultrasound for my stupid health and I’m trying not to worry about it, because it’s most likely not worth worrying anyway. #oneriffaday has healing properties though. since the beginning of this month I feel like I’ve reconnected with a part of myself that I was ashamed of hiding and ignoring for so long. This month gave me a challenge that was doable, something to achieve that was within my reach. Leading up to the first of this month I didn’t actually think much about participating, I sort of just assumed I’d be too lazy to commit at all. Day 29/31 #1RAD @sheshreds_media I had some grand plans for acoustic fingerstyle today, but my e string broke and the peg flew out and I basically can’t find it!! So instead I thought I would try some Pink Floyd style riffing- truly this video could have gone on for hours! Tried a few different ideas, slowing it down and going for feel rather than lots of notes. I’m also sad that this month and the 1RAD challenge is nearly over, I learnt a huge amount from this experience, including coming up with musical ideas when my body was very ready for bed! Day 24:: #1rad :: a background for last nights noodle, I think. I always try to move whatever chords come to my mind up and down the neck in case something sounds better in a different position. I think it opens my ears up to hearing different notes, and my fingers feel like they can wander more to find something interesting that I might not have heard if I was further up or down the neck. Jodie is a badass guitarist, singer and songwriter who first played The Whale Guitar on an uncomfortably hot day in August, 2015, when she shared her then new song “Credit Score”. (slide #1) Back then she was also a marine biologist, and she taught me many things she had learned in her whale health research, like how stress can be measured by sampling the spray of whales and studying the types and quantities of hormones exuded. Since then Jodie has become a healer of stress in humans by training in Five Elements acupuncture, and opening her Drift Acupuncture & Wellness practice (logo by me) in her home on Martha’s Vinyard. We visited her there last weekend, where she graciously taught me a riff she loves for my Day 11 #1rad #1riffadaychallenge post with @sheshreds_media . It had an article about a scientist, Michael J. Moore, who is trying to help highly endangered right whales by expanding human understanding of our role in their plight. The article is titled after his book “We Are All Whalers” which I ordered and will soon be reading. I am always amazed at the synchronicities of this Melvillian journey: on the ferry to meet a musician/former whale researcher/healer I encounter the writings of another whale scientist seeking to heal an endangered cetacean population.
