Of course our OEM battery hood downs that we had powder coated were too short. So what’s a person to do but order some stainless rod and make new ones with a bit more bling. A steel spacer gets a sanded relief to be used as a bending/hammering fixture and the ends of the new rods got threaded to 5/16-18. Polished up, ready to install. #55wagon #55chevy #makeyourownshit
#flashbackfriday A couple years ago we were commissioned to fabricate some duplicates of the 55 Chevy Air Conditioner car battery relocation kits. Since AC was not available as factory installed, these were a dealer installed item to move the battery off the firewall to make room for the AC parts. While we were making the brackets, we made an extra so we could clean up our firewall. Just installed our battery and figured out the zee bracket I had made based on a factory drawing does in fact fit. Some days you'd rather be lucky than good. #55chevy #55wagon

Rudy has been working on the wagon and sent a few photos of the work to date. It has been mainly some fine tuning and adjustment to the panel gaps etc. - cut 1/8” off the top of lift gate for a proper gap. - finished welding numerous holes and fabricate sheet metal section to fill area where old windshield hole was on firewall and grind all welds to a metal finish. - deleting the antenna hole. - weld up area on the left upper door area to correct the door gap to front fender, grind weld to correct gap clearance. - reinstall and aligning the front clip and hood for body and paint. #55wagon #55chevy #handyman #1955chevrolet #longroof #wagon #longroofs

Mirrors. Do you go with stock, drill holes in the door, aftermarket sport mirrors (🤮) ?? We opted for the old school look of peep mirrors, but weren’t sold on the clamp on paint chipper. Since the 55’s door had a hole drilled for a nut plate for the upper trim, we decided two birds, one stone. A hole is pressed into the upper trim (this is a practice piece) using the tail stock on the South Bend to press our home made dies, where a screw will go through the door to hold mirror and trim alike. #55wagon #55chevy #itsallinthedetails

More stainless trim repair. Removing 68 years worth of rock dings from the front of the windshield trim. The ding is LIGHTLY tapped from the backside to bring up the damage and then smoothed off with 400. Then bring up the defect again and the process continues until the defect disappears. Then we’ll go progressively through 600,1200, 1500, then 3000 and 5000 Trizact, before finishing on the buffer. #55wagon #55chevy #stainlesstrim

Getting more wiring done on the wagon, we used OEM style boots to keep water intrusion to a minimum, and new W-crimp button contacts to eliminate the need for splicing a pigtail. The housing was sprayed in black epoxy and some white single stage inside help brighten up the light situation. #55wagon #55chevy
More details. The antenna base is far from sitting level, so in order to have a vertical antenna, we’ll need a wedged and tapered spacer. The first picture shows our mock up version using aluminum, which doesn’t match chrome and won’t stay as shiny. So I picked up some stainless to make a more permanent version. The wedge was formed using a 12” disc sander, adding an angle profile to the end of the rod. Then the taper was added on the lathe. In order to polish this thing up on the buffing wheel, a 1/2-13 bolt and two rivnuts became a nice handhold. Gotta love reproduction shit. Our new repop lock cylinders came with a retaining clip that didn’t fit like the original (through the slot in the inner door). So we media blasted the originals clips and sent them off for cerakote. Today while attempting the installation, we get to find out the lock cylinder holes in the repop door skins were punched too low by over 1/4”. Since they were original clips I blindly thought there was no need to test fit. Live and learn. So in order to cover the slot, we trimmed the original, added some 3M strip caulk on the back side to help resist movement, and the repop retaining clip is installed over top of the original to hold everything in place. Our upper fender mounts at the cowl used some stacked stainless washers as shims that were rather unsightly, so we used some black delrin left over from Jared’s radius arm bushings and cut them the correct height for the spacer. Since they were already drilled, we machined some solid aluminum inserts that were then match drilled for a less is more look. #55wagon #55chevy

#throwbackthursday #tipsandtricks #learnfrommymistakes We had already replaced the A-pillar dog leg on the passenger side due to rust, and had completely missed the driver's side until we had the car upside down for blocking. Hindsight, if you have rust on one side of the car, check the opposite side with a fine tooth comb... We fabricated the replacement patch from 19 gauge AKDQ, using quite a bit of shrink (and some heat for persuasion) to add the corner so we could make this in one piece. Then some stretch is added in order to tip the flange. A barrel end hammer (Proto 1426) is used to add the stepped detail and the part gets mocked up with the w/s stainless to verify fitment. #55chevy #55wagon

#techtiptuesday #tipsandtricks We had some rust holes in the bottom of a radiator baffle, and the petcock was also too close that it was difficult to operate. So while we're fabricating, let's drop the slot for more clearance around the petcock. Anytime I have some oddball bend to make, I use a tipping wheel in the bead roller to pre-mark the bend line. It both gives you a good visual for hammering and helps persuade the metal where to bend. This was done primarily using the 2" diameter round stock shown on the vise as an anvil. The outer two radiuses had some shrinking that occurred as tucks were formed and flattened against the side of the round stock, the center radius had a bit of extra hammering to provide stretch. #55chevy #55wagon
Working on the last piece of dash inset trim, the upper and lower edge trim pieces are squeezed together to persuade them around the 19 gauge template. A bit of heat added while squeezing and we have a nice tuck for shrinking the stainless. Our highly technical slip roll adds the radius to match the dash, next we’ll get the final polish done and get this last piece installed. #55wagon #55chevy #makeyourownshit
#throwbackthursday While mocking up our Caddy air cleaner on the 55 wagon, we needed an inconspicuous location for the ignition coil, and I just couldn’t bring myself to clutter up that purdy green paint on the firewall. Mounting the coil behind the firewall would guarantee ignition noise in the radio, and the inner fender would give an excessive length on the coil wire. Maybe, just maybe, we can modify this big honkin air cleaner to hide it in there. An oval cutout of the mounting boss on top, rotate 180 and reweld gains us an inch. This leaves enough room for the air filter and hidden location for the coil. The next hurdle, that coil all tucked away will surely need some air flow across the cooling fins. Some inlet ports were added to our recess, and a hammer form gets some retaining rings fabricated to hold stainless wire mesh. This locates our coil directly above the distributor, and we’ll add a flexible braid down to the intake to ensure things stay grounded. #55wagon #55chevy #makeyourownshit

We used the end piece of our dash insert and rolled it on a piece of 19 gauge cold rolled to mark out an “anvil” for shaping our edge trim. Some heat and tucks applied as needed. Tomorrow we’ll roll it around the argon bottle to match the dash. #55wagon #55chevy #makeyourownshit

Per request @busterhoffmaster here are the details of the shoulder harness anchor point we added to the #55wagon B pillar. The inner portion of the B pillar is ribbed for strength, which also gives us a void for attachment. Some 1/2” rod is bent to surround the 1/2-13 nut, and the parts welded together. The U shape behind the nut also serves to limit any hardware in the future from pushing outward on sheet metal, should someone get the length wrong. The assembly was inserted into the channel from inside the quarter panel cavity after bending a flap of sheet metal downward, and openings in the window opening into the channel helped us to move things uphill for positioning. Plug welds above and below the anchor nut opening hold the assembly in place.
Since the new power window mechanisms will no longer work with the factory window stops (the window bottomed out on the wheel well), we made these out of delrin and bolted to the window track. #55wagon #55chevy #makeyourownshit
